Mods feel free to merge this with another thread, I'm feeling whorish.
Obviously the Spurs couldn't make a basket to save their lives or take care of the ball, which sometimes happens, but the Spurs can control their D and this is the biggest problem. :bang
We held Paul to subpar shooting Game 1, but were ousted by West, vice versa this game. This game we held West, but gave up on Paul, ~26 points and ~13 assists is at least 56 points all due to Paul, I'm not counting any assits that led 3's, other wise increase that number.
What the Spurs need is a defensive scheme that contains Paul from a passing perspective; let the guy shoot all he wants. If we are able to contain Paul, we knock off guys like Chandler, Peterson, and Peja from getting into an offensive rythm. At least 3 times in a row I saw a PnR play involving Paul and Chandler, Tim and Tony were so focused on Paul, that Tyson briskly walked towards the basket for the easiest scores, 1 resulted in a layup, 1 in a dunk, the other a trip to the FT line. We need to triple team that PnR play have the player on Chandlers side slide down a little. We became so focused on that we let guys like Mo Peterson kill us in the 1st half with threes and getting comfy offensively, same with Peja. In my opnion this is the defensive scheme that Pop should implent Game 3:
Kurt Thomas on West - He gave West trouble, Oberto wasn't bad either, was aggressive, didn't back down. A rotation of KT, Oberto, and TD like tonight should take limit him.
Tyson Chandler - Not an offensive threat so the other big is on him, just don't neglect him all together or you'll end up like Timmy, balls on the scalp.
Peja - Start Bowen OR Udoka on him. Let him succumb to some pressure, push him around a little, then switch Ginobili on him when he enters.
CP3 - Preferably Bowen, but I'm all for CP3 getting 35 PPG, but most importantly no passing, make him a scorer, not a distrubutor, also do what they did to Ginobili, trap him in the corner with a double team.
Whoever is the starting 2 - I think it's Mo Peterson, do no let the guy get EASY shots resulting in higher confidence, resulting in a higher level of play.
Also, if worst comes to worst implent a Zone offense to stop the penetration of Paul, but be aware/catious of three point threats in Peja, Peterson, and Pargo.
3rd Quarters are a key, we were outscored in both games and these periods were the deciding factor in who won the game.
I don't expect the Spurs to TO the ball that much again, Ginobili was horrible, Parker was way to passive, Tim played okay, but okay is not good enough. Also, we settled too much for the three, we were like 8-25, that is not going to cut it, I did not see more than 2 quality drives to the rim all night long. What happend to tucking the ball, putting your head down and plowing through the lane, we need more of that from Manu and Tony when are jumpers weren't falling, I saw too many jumpers from Tony and Manu as well, when Manu's shot isn't falling he needs to drive in, take the fucking contact and don't back down. All in all, I still think we have this. :flag:
