Breakthrough Discovered in Medical Marijuana Cancer Treatment

Researchers learned that cannabinoids have been associated with anti-carcinogenic effects, which are responsible in preventing or delaying the development of cancer.

Salem-News.com

(SALEM, Ore.) - A new study reveals that Medical Marijuana can be an effective treatment for cancer, that is the word announced by doctors in Germany who concluded that this clarification of the mechanism of cannabinoid action may help investigators to further explore their therapeutic benefit.

The medical article was originally published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute Advance Access and online on December 25th 2007.

Cancer cells that were treated with combinations of cannabinoids, antagonists of cannabinoid receptors, and small interfering ribo nucleic acid or 'siRNA' to tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) were assessed for invasiveness, protein expression, and activation of signal transduction pathways.

The biggest contribution of this breakthrough discovery, is that the expression of TIMP-1 was shown to be stimulated by cannabinoid receptor activation and to mediate the anti-invasive effect of cannabinoids.

In other words, they learned that treatment with cannabinoids, one of the active ingredients of the medicinal side of marijuana, has been shown to reduce the invasiveness of cancer cells. Prior to now the cellular mechanisms underlying this effect were unclear and the relevance of the findings to the behavior of tumor cells in vivo remains to be determined.

It is already known that marijuana can stimulate the appetite of patients, but researchers have learned that cannabinoids, in addition to having palliative benefits in cancer therapy, have been associated with anti-carcinogenic effects, which are responsible in preventing or delaying the development of cancer.

"Although the anti-proliferative activities of cannabinoids have been intensively investigated, little is known about their effects on tumor invasion," the article stated.

Method

In this now completed round of research, Matrigel-coated and uncoated Boyden chambers were used to quantify invasiveness and migration, respectively, of human cervical cancer 'HeLa' cells that had been treated with cannabinoids.

The stable anandamide analog R(+)-methanandamide 'MA' and the phytocannabinoid 9-tetrahydrocannabinol 'THC' in the presence or absence of antagonists of the CB1 or CB2 cannabinoid receptors or of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) or inhibitors of p38 or p42/44 mitogen–activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways.

A method known as 'reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction' and immunoblotting were used to assess the influence of cannabinoids on the expression of matrix metalloproteinases and endogenous tissue inhibitors. The role of TIMP-1 in the anti-invasive action of cannabinoids was analyzed by transfecting HeLa, human cervical carcinoma, or human lung carcinoma cells cells with siRNA targeting TIMP-1.

They say all statistical tests were two-sided.

Results

Without modifying migration, MA and THC caused a time and concentration-dependent suppression of HeLa cell invasion through Matrigel that was accompanied by increased expression of TIMP-1.

At the lowest concentrations tested, MA and THC led to a decrease in cell invasion.

"The stimulation of TIMP-1 expression and suppression of cell invasion were reversed by pretreatment of cells with antagonists to CB1 or CB2 receptors, with inhibitors of MAPKs, or, in the case of MA, with an antagonist to TRPV1. Knockdown of cannabinoid-induced TIMP-1 expression by siRNA led to a reversal of the cannabinoid-elicited decrease in tumor cell invasiveness in HeLa, A549, and C33A cells."

The researchers concluded that increased expression of TIMP-1 mediates an anti-invasive effect of cannabinoids. That means that in our future, cannabinoids may offer a therapeutic option in the treatment of highly invasive cancers.

nice maybe they will legalize it and of course tax the hell out of it.

To add, i saw this guy on CNN, he was a staunch anti Marijuana person going into this study. He fully expected to find that it increases the risks of cancer, and was baffled at their findings of the opposite...

Kids, you now have a valid argument to your parents when they find your stash next time.

That guy needs to not get his panties in a wad until someone proves it prevents cancer. All this shows is that it helps if you already have cancer. Wouldn't it be weird if that guy got cancer and the only thing that would help is marijuana?

This is conventional thinking, but this study is actually proving otherwise.

I still think it will take further studies for me to fully believe it, but it is pretty damn interesting.

I'd never suck smoke into my lungs. That's for suckers. Any smoke will leave residue. Inhaling deeply and holding like pot-heads assures the residue penetrates deeply. Fucking yuck.

I bet the cannaboids can be taken orally. Magic brownies, cookies, smoothies? We know all those work damn well! :)

If the cannaboids are rendered ineffective for cancer by GI system and liver, then:

transdermally (like hormones and nicotine). or

the cannaboids extracted and put into an inhaler.

Just another "natural" anti-cancer medicine that FDA and BigPharma will contine to totally prohibit. Google "codex alimentaris" coming to your health food shop soon.

The typical BigPharma approach is be to modify the phyto-chemicals, maybe increase the effectiveness, then patent it, get it fasttracked by FDA. The "religious" nutters would fight like hell to get the "high" molecules removed. Then BigPharma charges $1000s/month for treatment, when cost to mfr is pennies. Gotta cover the $60B/year in BigPharma marketing costs somehow, huh? Might as well fuckover sick people.

I'm really surprised they haven't already developed a non-smoking delivery since cannaboids have been know for years to be effective natural medicines, glaucom relief, etc.

Fuck conservatives, fuck right-wing ideologues, and fuck "religious" nutters. They're Bad For Ya. :lol

Exactly. And so far it's only been shown in petri dishes, which doesn't mean it will hold true for actual patients.

Thread title is misleading.

Can not tax it because it is so easy to grow...hence the reason why the drug companies will never allow it to be legalized. It is too cheap and therefore it would put a number of more expensive drugs out of business.

No, marajuana does not lead to lung cancer, that has been proven many times.

"marajuana does not lead to lung cancer"

How about reduced lung function, emphysema, COPD. All clear, puff away?

I've heard that smoking alot of weed also reduces your chances of getting a job, finding a good spouse, and having a life.

Smoking large amounts of weed DO however, increase your chances of sitting on the couch, doing nothing in particular. And getting the munchies.

Most of the people I know who allow pot to make them lazy would be lazy even without the indulgence.

Which is not to suggest that smoking pot is the key to success, of course, just that it's not impossible to both smoke weed and lead a full and functional life.

I did not intend to draw that conclusion.

But smoking alot of weed does seem to have a negative correlation to (a) finding a spouse, (b) getting a job, or (c) having a life. Then again, perhaps people who smoke alot of weed do so because they're single, jobless, and have no life.

It's a chicken or the egg thing, I guess.

All I know is that back when I used to smoke a lot of pot, I had so much phlegm build up in my throat, that I couldn't even breath that easily. I really don't see how smoking could possibly be benign of your lungs. I'm not against pot at all. I just find all these studies a little hard to believe.

This study isn't about the benefits of smoking marijuana. It's about the benefits of an active ingredient in marijuana, cannabiniods. I'm sure it's possible to extract these cannabiniods other than by means of smoking. Really, the majority of carcinogens in marijuana come from the stems and seeds. The active ingredient, THC, isn't harmful when taken appropriately. There is a pill form of THC available called Merinol. THC has many positive benefits. Unfortunately, marijuana has shown a tendency to be easily abused and the increasing trend of polysubstance abuse.

Which there have been common complaints about. Most say it gives them bad trips rather than just smoking regular canibus. Merinol sucks.

This article didn't suggest that SMOKING green may have an anti-cancer effect, but rather that the cannabinoids do (the thread title is WRONG).

Therefore delivery of cannabioids by other methods is definitely indicated! (see boutons)
