Steve Francis exercises contract option

HOUSTON (TICKER) —Houston Rockets guard Steve Francis elected to exercise the option on the final year of his current contract, the team announced Wednesday.

The Rockets did not disclose financial terms of the contract. But Francis made just over $2.4 million last season, a disappointing campaign shortened by injuries.

Francis, 31, averaged 5.5 points and 3.0 assists in just 10 games before undergoing season-ending right knee surgery in February.

It was a lackluster return to Houston for Francis, who spent the first five seasons of his career with the Rockets - earning the nickname “Stevie Franchise” as the team’s star player.

Francis had spent the previous three-plus seasons with four different teams. However, he did not play a game for the Portland Trail Blazers, who bought him out of his $30 million contract last summer - allowing for his return to the Rockets.

The 6-3 Francis was considered one of the NBA’s top all-around point guards during his first five-year stint with Houston and has averaged 18.1 points, 6.0 assists and 5.6 rebounds in parts of nine seasons with the Rockets, New York Knicks and Orlando Magic.

But the high-flying Francis has been a different player since originally suffering the knee injury with the Knicks during the 2005-06 season.

If he can do this with a torn quadriceps tendon in his right knee, what the fuck do you think he will do after he recovers from his recent surgery to repair this:rolleyes

besides, anything we can get from him is gravy anyway.....low $ risk, potential big reward.....

Is he able to recover back to normal self after he heal from surgery? If so this Rocket team look good.

PG Francis/Alston/Brooks
SG McGrady/draft pick/Jackson
SF Battier/free agent/Novak
PF Scola/Landry/Hayes
C Yao/Mutombo

They justs needs good draft pick replace crap player Luther Head and good free agent replace Mike Harris. They also need center but maybe not able to one yet. If Francis is recovers team is capable of fight for champions.

He's blowing smoke out his rear. Alston never outplayed a healthy Steve Francis. Now that Jose Calderon and Walter Hermann are available FA's, the Rockets might try to get one of them with their MLE. LLE would have to go to pay Landry.

He has not been healthy in 3 years, they finally found the knee problem, it was a quadriceps tear and they fixed it.

Now, I am not counting on him at all, but maybe just maybe....

The old Steve Francis had great physical ability. No one questions that. But he's old, out-of-shape, and can't play at a high level anymore. And he's a spoiled brat anyway. And what's he ever won?

I say the Rockets should start him at the point. See if that gets them anywhere.

we beat their ass down this year, and when we didn't we had no yao or landry...New O aint shit.

in years past, we had trouble with them. No longer.

1-13 5pt loss, tmac inactive

2-22 100-80 win in N.O.

3-8 106-96 win, Landry and Yao out

3-19 20 pt loss, yao and landry out, 2nd night of b2b on road.

Easily could have swept them with Yao and landry suited up for all games.

so stfu, N.O. aint shit.

whatever homer.

Deny, deny, deny...I watched Francis lose countless games dribbling out shot clocks without the first fucking clue as to what to do with the ball.

He is (or perhaps was) a wonderful dunker and a great athlete. Which, of course, camouflaged the fact that his jumper was erratic and his decision-making was for shit.

You can think he was fun to watch. You can think he was a great guy. You can even appreciate his wispy moustache if you'd like. But if you're going to try and lie about his ability to play basketball, just know you're not going to get away with it. We all caught his act, and it didn't produce a whole lot of winning.

He was also verrrrrrry mature on draft night.

he is talented, more of a team player now, still has hops, is low $, potential high reward team player with HEART. Nobody expects him to carry the team on his shoulders like b4...

And Francis is such a team guy he sat all year for the good of the team.

still has hops, is low $

Hops matter. Ask Harold Miner, Terence Stansbury, Chris Carr, Mike Wilson, etc.

There is an excellent reason Francis is low $.

potential high reward team player with HEART.

This sentence is so unintentionally funny I won't even comment. I'll just post it five more times to emphasize how absurd it is:

potential high reward team player with HEART.

Ladies and gentlemen, that statement was about Steve Francis. In all seriousness.

This has been an excellent basketball discussion. You and I should get a show on NBA TV. Of course, considering the position you've taken, I can understand why you gave up discussing basketball altogether. It would be like me arguing for Ricky Davis - I would quickly descend into ad hominem myself.

Steve Francis was Tony Parker's BITCH before any of his injuries, so I see no reason that would change. In spite of his size, he is not a PG any more than Iverson is. He's just another undersized selfish chucker. There's a reason they shipped him out. He wasn't down with the Yao-centric offense, and he kept the ball for at least 20 seconds of virtually every possession.
