I'm Rick James, Bitch

Sorry, It was too easy to pass up.
I'm not a troll. I just joined but I've been a Spurs fan since the Rodman days. I think Bob Hill got a raw deal, but I still like Pop
Elliott's 3 pointer falling out of bounds is one of my all time favorite shots

Doe sthat make me official enough? :rolleyes

Seriously though, I've always ondered why he hugs the ball that way.

Duncan has a couple of "superstitions" he follows. He hugs the ball before every game, and he wears his practice shorts backwards in practice.

That one makes the most sense so far.. at shoot around and before tip off he usually presses it between his palms to do that though

I heard that the reason he hugs the ball is to show the ball some love, to get some in return (i.e. he will make his baskets)

So duncan228, if Tim Duncan wanted to have sex with you, would you do it?

Disclaimer: Although Tim Duncan is not the guy to cheat on his wife and duncan228 is not the type to cheat on her husband, let us pretend this is bizzarro world.

It's his pre-game ritual, the same way that LeBron throws all that talcum powder up in the air. But not as messy.

Well I can't speak for Duncan but I have always done it too.

For me personally, it makes me feel stronger, the ball lighter and smaller. Temporarily of course.

Best I can explain it is for the same reason in baseball, they put those little tubes on their bat to make it heavier when in the box waiting to bat.

That's Duncan's "lucky" routine. Baseball players are more into strange little rituals, but I think just about all the NBA's stars have something or another. The weirdest was when Magic used to kiss Isaiah everytime they went up against one another.

Common knowledge doesn't make it official. If you're cool and avoid :troll-like behavior, you'll be welcomed here.

Yeah.. Lebron needs to be slapped for that. All that damn powder getting on the floor. The Hornets mascot was bad enough at that...

That CP3 flop was so absurd I wasn't even mad about it. I just kinda giggled. I guess Ric Flair influences the Hornets on the court as well

You gotta add the 3 pointer against Phoenix to it :)

isn't a tribute to his mom?

Could be. I know that in 2002, Malik Rose did the same thing in tribute to Timmy before Game 4 of the Spurs/Sonics series in Seattle. Tim missed that game to attend his father's funeral; the Spurs played with immense heart -- Malik particularly, but were severely undermanned (no Tim Duncan, no David Robinson, no Danny Ferry; Mark Bryant got ejected and Charles Smith suffered a severe injury too) and lost the game forcing a Game 5 (the first "ultimate" game in Tim's career). The following morning, the Express-News ran a poignant picture of Malik holding the ball ala Timmy under a headline that read something like "Night of Pain."

It's just a habit from his days as an island boy. They "hug" coconuts to see if they are ripe. So he just started doing it with the basketball.

Is it me or is this day just going by tooooo fucking slow. The waiting is driving me nuts.
