Kobe, Garnett Headline All-Defensive Team
Posted May 12 2008 2:17PM

NEW YORK, May 12, 2008 – Forward Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers headline the NBA All-Defensive First Team, the NBA announced today. Garnett, who earns his ninth All-Defensive Team selection, and Bryant, who earns his eighth selection, each received 52 points overall including 24 first-place nods.

Also selected to the First Team are 2007 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Camby of the Denver Nuggets, who ranked first in blocks (3.61 bpg) and second in rebounds (13.1 rpg), and Bruce Bowen and Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs. Duncan earns his 11th consecutive selection, while Bowen earns his eighth and Camby his second.

Garnett earned his first Defensive Player of the Year award, presented by Kia Motors, by leading the Celtics in rebounds (9.2 rpg) and helping the team hold opponents to a league-best .419 field goal shooting percentage. The Celtics owned the largest point differential (+10.3) during the 2007-08 season and held opponents to 90.3 points per game, nearly nine points less than last season.

The NBA All-Defensive Second Team consists of Shane Battier of the Houston Rockets, Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets, Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, Tayshaun Prince of the Detroit Pistons and Raja Bell of the Phoenix Suns. Paul and Howard are each making their first appearance on an All-Defensive team.

The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to select NBA All-Defensive First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own team. Two points were awarded for a First Team vote and one point was awarded for a Second Team vote.

Not surprising that this didn't make the NBA's notice, but by attaining his 11th selection to an All-Defense team, Tim Duncan tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only players in NBA history to have that many selections to an All-Defense team (Bobby Jones had 11 during his career, but 2 of those were in the ABA)

Tim also has 8 First Team selections, only Gary Payton and Michael Jordan have made more First Teams (Bobby Jones and Scottie Pippen are the only other players with 8 First Team selections).

Bruce Bowen and Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs. Duncan earns his 11th consecutive selection, while Bowen earns his eighth

Says alot about the defensive presence that has been in San Antonio for awhile now.

Tyson Chandler and Rasheed Wallace should have more votes than Chris Paul or Dwight Howard. Howard, esp - as great as an offensive player as he is, much like Amare - his defensive gaffes are being exposed against Detroit.

Yeah, right! Allen is the antithesis of defense.

But I agree with the original poster about Pierce - a very underrated defender, certainly worthy of second or third team.

Yeah, the fact that Paul even outscored Tayshaun Prince is also incredible to me. Yikes.

I think the top defenders in the league are Bowen, Duncan, KG, Rasheed Wallace, Tayshaun Prince, and Battier.

That's more like it. Camby good player, good shot blocker from the weak side. Horrible one on one defender. It's a fucking joke.

I agree, re Paul: the way he's been playing Tony, I don't see him deserving a second team selection. He's good for a couple of steals a game, but that hardly makes up for him not being able to stay in front of his man and contest easy shots.

Oh, you can say that Parker does that to everyone. But does he? There were times these past two playoff games when Paul has looked as flat footed as Steve Nash... not exactly a scary defensive "enforcer."

I've seen them played some amazing defense... once... for about 6 minutes...

Their pace was so quick this year that it looks like they were playing no defense at all when you just look at the boxscore but I've seen some nice defensive effort from Denver when they were committed to it.

It just didn't happened that often and never for a full 48 minutes.

Duncan, Bowen on All-Defensive team

NEW ORLEANS — Spurs coach Gregg Popovich credited his team's defensive performance for its ability to even the Western Conference semifinal series against the New Orleans Hornets at two games apiece, so he was gratified Monday when both Tim Duncan and Bruce Bowen were named to the league's All-Defensive first team.

“I'm real happy for Timmy and Bruce,” Popovich said before boarding the Spurs' charter jet to New Orleans. “They worked hard, as all the other players on the list did, I'm sure. But to have two on one team is pretty special.

“That's what helps us win. Without that, we're just another basketball team, but they make it different for us.”

The 30 NBA head coaches select the All-Defensive teams. They gave 24 first-team votes each to Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics and Most Valuable Player Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. Denver's Marcus Camby, the 2006-07 Defensive Player of the Year, got 14 first-team votes and was the first-team center for the second consecutive season.

Bowen got 13 first-team votes and 10 second-team votes and was the only player on either the first or second teams listed as a combo player — a guard/forward.

Duncan got 12 first-team votes and nine second-team votes. He has been on the All-Defensive team each of his 11 seasons in the NBA.

No other team had two players on either the first or second teams.

Spurs guard Manu Ginobili was among the other players receiving votes.

Hornets guard Chris Paul was a second-team selection, and center Tyson Chandler also received votes.
