We are having a debate about this is a piston forum that I am in. Some say he is a Center because he plays with his back to the basket. I say he is a powerforward. I figure who better to ask to resolve this question then the fans that watch him play everynight. Thanks.

power forward. his skill-set is that of a power forward. he started his career playing as power forward. he has always played besides a center so that he could be at power forward.

michael jordan spent a good portion of his career with the back to the basket, was he center?

tim plays plenty of both. it's more about the locations that he occupies on the floor as opposed to style of play.

Should be classified a center but Tim wouldn't even be the starting center in the All-Star game so they whined and whined because Yao was the starting center so they moved him over to Power Forward.

He really is both. He "jumps center", though.

And he's good enough to be both. :)

The man can play either position but there really is no debate as he has played, and been classified, as a PF his whole entire career. People wanting to judge him as a center are grasping at straws hoping to make it seem like he has an unfair advantage as a small center playing as a big power forward.

fuck the haters.

If he's the Spurs' center, what is Oberto?

Definitely a PF, but picked up quite a few minutes at C once DRob retired. He's, at heart, a PF though. It seems to me that Pop always wanted to run the two-tall-guys thing with Timmy at teams, so after DRob (starting in 2004), the team had to play the C by "committee", with Timmy playing center more and more minutes at C as teams in the West have gone smaller...

Kurt Thomas, it seems to me, is a natural PF as well, but when he and Timmy play together, KT takes the 5 and Timmy takes the 4 (maybe because of whom they defend), but Timmy will jump the ball when KT starts because he has like 3-4" on him.

Timmy jumps the ball when Oberto starts, also, freemeat.

weird...considering he can't really jump.

A couple of questions for you positional "experts":
When the Spurs run a 3-out, 2-in Motion offense, which of the 2 inside players is the "center"?

When the Spurs run a 4-out, 1-in Motion offense, who plays the center position?

When the Spurs run a Shuffle-cut or a Flex or they double stack to initiate, who plays the center position?

Duncan is both but I think he is best as a power forward. Especially with another shot blocker playing alongside him.

PF. He would be a liability guarding SF's. He defends PF's the best of all positions. Also SF's tend to have more success guarding him. You definitely don't want him at SF. If a team can go small with a SF at PF, that could cause Dirk problems.

Has Dirk ever played center? By the way, I admire is bb skills, specially his shooting. I think he is one of the very few best shooters in the league.

Duncan is a Center. All his epic battles have been against Centers. Yao, Shaq, Olajuwon. Nobody remembers his epic battles against Boozer.

I would argue the opposite if i were you so Yao can keep his label as the best C in the league.
