Johnny Carson, 30-year king of late night TV, dead at 79
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Johnny Carson, the Tonight Show TV host who served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. He was 79.
"Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service."
Sotzing would not give further details, including the time of death or the location.
The boyish-looking Nebraska native with the disarming grin, who survived every attempt to topple him from his late-night talk show throne, was a star who managed never to distance himself from his audience.

Shit. A legend passes. If you're between 44 and 12, chances are you were conceived during or just after the Tonight Show. When it came out that Carson had been sending bits to Letterman, they had mentioned that he had emphesema. Smoking kills.

I thought he was ill. RIP, Johnny!

You know, this is one day I don't mind having a song in my head.
Got the old "Tonight Show" theme in my head right now.
Wonder how Ed's taking it?
RIP Johnny Carson

So many people owe Johnny their careers. The people whom he gave a chance and the hosts who came after him and so many more. The honor was ours.

Carnac: "Sis-boom-bah"
Ed: "Sis-boom-bah" *audience laughter*
Carnac: *tearing envelope, blowing on it* "The sound made by an exploding sheep"
That sequence once held the record for the longest sustained laugh on television (over 2 minutes).

I loved the insults Carnac would throw out.
"May the fleas of 1000 camels rest in your armpits" and stuff like that.
His comedy was timeless.

Carnac: "Dipity Do"
Ed: "Dipity Do" *audience laughter*
Carnac: *tearing envelope, blowing on it* "What forms on your Dipity by morning"

I spent 8 weeks in the hospital in traction when I was in seventh grade from a football injury...I would always start whining about pain and hitting the nurses buzzer about 10pm...they would finally show up and hammer me with an IV nembutol drip just in time for Carsons monologue...I would laugh my ass off right through Carson, then the star spangled banner and the gray static test pattern after that...back in the stone age all the stations in SA went off the air a little after midnight...
