We need a real center so Tim can play PF fulltime. We need a good, big, athletic backup PG and we need a bunch of long, athletic guys who can make a DAMN basket!!! We sure could use Scola's :ihitTUFFness:ihit! A real shame Pop let him get away! And we need some height with long arms and quickness who can play :nopeDefense:nope on guys like West and Dirk!

Ian Mahinmi was great in the D league this year. Pop has to make a committment to trying to find him some reg minutes next year. He is talented and athletic, give the kid a shot to prove himself.

I would expect a couple of those guys to return (at least 1 of Oberto/Thomas/Bonner).

But those panicking may overrate how difficult it will be to rebuild the rest of the team on the fly.

We've probably got 2 more years with the big 3 still playing at a prime level.

Splitter & Mahinmi join the team next year. If just one of the draft picks enters as a remotely productive player (not unfeasible) and we add an athletic wing via free agency - suddenly, this team doesn't look so old.

The age thing is somewhat skewed by the role players' ages (and who was the last team to win a championship without veteran role players?) - which can be changed relatively quickly. In terms of the guys who are actually leaned on for heavy minutes, only Bowen is a threat to lose his legs in the extreme near future.

We're in much better shape than PHX. Boston & Detroit's core players are actually slightly older than the Spurs'.

Our problem is our perimeter players. Splitter will be here, Ian will be here, Bonner may or may not be here(if we can repeat he'll at least have some kind of experience), Duncan isn't going anywhere for another couple of years

....but those perimeter guys are fading fast.

That is the A#1 priority IMO. At the very least we need a young slasher/shooter that can knock down open shots, preferably one that goes about 6'7-6'8. He doesn't have to be an All Star....he just has to be able to do a couple of things well.

For some reason Pop has basically given up on Bonner. When Bonner is given minutes so as to get into the flow of the game he usually is good for some points, rebounds and getting a loose ball or two. I'd like to keep Thomas and see what he can give us after going through training camp and then playing early on when there is not as much pressure as the final few weeks of the season. Oberto just plain 'SUCKS' about 80% of the time. He can go 10 & 10 and then totally disappear for 6,7,8 or more games.

Splitter & Mahinmi will or should help out a lot once they've become acclimated with the rest of the team. Bowen is at the point where Pop should use him more like the Lakers ShowTime used Michael Cooper. But, with him and guys like Finley putting up goose eggs so much of the time we could really use a guy like Ron Artest w/o the attitude. Vaughn and Stoudamire are gone...period. Unless Pop keeps Vaughn around as an assistant coach. Berry and Ime will be back and if Berry comes back healthy the two will provide good offense and defense off the bench. Not great but, something we can live with off the bench. We really need another 6'11-7'1 guy who can give Tim a lot more help than Oberto does when we play New Orleans, Utah, Los Angeles, Houston, possibly Phoenix and the new kids on the block...Portland and Seattle.

Boston & Detroit both have some good young players coming off the bench. New Orleans is showing us how old some of our legs are, i.e., Finley and Horry for sure. And Oberto and Thomas sure ain't spring chickens when it comes to the David West/Dirk Nasty types. Tim is just not what one would call athletic. He is the ultimate postup type. Like a slim version of Shaq.

Bottom line is it will be an interesting off-season. Salaries are one problem along with the age thing. Plus to get someone really good the opposing team is going to want one of our Big 3...which ain't gonna happen unless we're talking a starting All Star type and that won't happen because Pop and Holt won't pay the Shaq, Kobe, KG, Lebron type salaries. Well they might if we could get Kobe or Lebron

Same thing for Splitter. Jackie Butler was supposed to be the starting center a few years ago. Spurs need to find an athletic big that has a little bit of experience and has proven he can play at this level. Udoka already has proven he can contribute. Athletic swingmen that can play can easily be found in the D-league or Europe. Priority is getting Duncan help, not just young bodies that "might" help and not old veterans ready to retire.
