Avery Johnson no longer in Bulls' plans
May 17, 2008
BY BRIAN HANLEY Staff Reporter

The Bulls believe Avery Johnson is not interested in becoming their next head coach and the team has no plans to further pursue him.

Johnson told Dan Patrick on WSCR-AM (670) on Thursday that he had spoken to the Bulls last week, but the former Dallas Mavericks coach indicated his options included taking time off.

That is the message the Bulls have heard loud and clear from Johnson. The Mavs owe Johnson $12 million for the three seasons left on his Dallas contract until he takes another job.

Bulls general manager John Paxson has scheduled interviews next week with coaches currently on the staffs of playoff teams, including Utah Jazz assistant Tyrone Corbin. Those interviews could take place once the second round concludes.

Other assistants expected to be interviewed by Paxson include Boston's Tom Thibodeau, Detroit's Michael Curry, and Brian Shaw of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Avery's laughing his way to the bank. Seriously, most teams would pick him up given his excellent win/loss record.

Brian Shaw's gonna make one good head coach.

Yeah I doubt he goes anywhere. Let Rambis bail for some crappy Eastern conference job while Shaw inherits the Lakers when Phil departs.

Time off would be good for Avery. Spend more time with the family, take up a new hobby, polish the ring, then maybe in 3 years he'll have calmed the hell down enough to not create another team mutiny at his next job. I really want to see Avery do well, he left Dallas with more good memories than bad ones.

Anyone sane should stay away from Avery. Horrible in-game decision making coach and is annoying to listen to.

Wow! That's a lot of dough. So mentally disabled owner in Dallas is paying $8.75MM per year for head coaches the next three years. What a genius.

Will AJ end up with the Suns? Maybe he'll come on as Pop's assistant if they hire Bud.

There is no way Avery is going to give up $12 million to be an assistant.

He is either going to get a coaching job that pays roughly the same or he'll become a Spurs' color commentator.:smchode:
