View Full Version : How do the Spurs defend Kobe?

Are they really going to single cover him for the rest of the series? If so, what happened last night will continue to happen again and again. Typically, the Spurs concede the star his points and try to take away everyone else but Kobe is going to get his teammates great looks, even when he has it going.

Maybe they wanted him to take the bait in the first half but he showed that he's not going to attack until he feels like it - regardless of what the defense does. Duncan, otoh, played into what LA wanted - took the one-on-one game and shot jumpers over Gasol and Turiaf but come 4th couldn't handle the double.

Can SA really afford not to send a double team early at Kobe?

the Spurs can defend Kobe by not putting Ime on him.

The Spurs aren't going to shoot 3-14 in the 4th again and again and again. I think they'll happily take the Lakers scoring 89 again and again and again, though, if that's what you mean.

let him get his points. we played decent D last night. It's our shots that did not fall.

Our shots start falling and lakers are toast.

they'll figure out how to stop global warming before stopping Kobe Bryant.
Come on spursfans, give it up for the greatest.

Let Kobe get his. Shut down all role players. Put Duncan on Gasol, and a BIG man on odom.

Shots need to fall and the ball needs to be handled better.

Lakers didn't play that well cuz our D was pretty much on point. With the exception of Manu, Fin, and Ime having a bad defensive game.

Probably by leaving Bowen on him.

Just a guess.

well you didn't read my post. Udoka obviously did a shitty job on Kobe if he started wailing out his shots. :wakeup

The only smallball on the court should belong to Gasol

I thought the whole point of dealing with Bowen's inadequacies was that he could "slow down" Kobe.

Did you miss the game last night?

Bowen went out midway on through the 3rd and the Lakers went on a 14-0 run. Spurs were +18 with Bowen on the court.

dont double kobe on the drive... gasol is too big of a target and i'd rather have kobe taking a running one handed bank shot than for gasol to catch it 2 feet from the rim and having a pretty good chance of an and 1 everytime.

let kobe score 40 a game. let everyone not named kobe bryant really earn his points (especially gasol) and not allow them to be spoon fed.

It's important to try to stop Kobe from getting into rhythm. You can't stop him, you can only make it hard for him. Bowen did a really good job last night. Taking him out for such a long time in the 3rd was a huge mistake last night. Of anyone on the team, Bowen's minutes need to be monitored. He should only be on the bench when Kobe is on the bench.

Maybe Derek Fisher and Lamar Odom don't go 4-for-21 from the field again as well.

maybe chauncey is really done

I really think Lamar won't be a big factor in this series offensively. The Spurs know how to guard him perfectly.

Fisher, OTOH, will probably not go 1/9 the rest of this series. He was missing wide open looks and shots he usually makes. You can't bank on that guy going ice cold for long.

I didn't feel like quoting. But, there is this post in this thread by leemajors:

That is the point I'm addressing. "The Spurs aren't going to shoot 3-14 in the 4th again." Well, Fisher and Odom won't shoot 4-21 again. My post had relevance to something someone previously posted in this thread.

Yours has absolutely no relevance.

that's a good strategy against kobe LAST YEAR.
the biggest reason he is mvp is because he is managing the whole game and his entire team now.

Problem is if the Spurs are willing to allow Kobe to score 40, he might go for 60.
