My desktop just died. :( It won't even turn on.

It is a Compaq and I have had it for at least five years. I have had to get it repaired the last two summers.
I don't even know that it is worth messing with anymore but don't want to dispose of it before knowing what my options are.

Any suggestions of who I might get to take a look at it or should I just let it rest in peace?
I am moving and so don't want to take along stuff I cannot use,

Ny monitor is a great one so I will definitely hold onto it.

If your PC is 5 years old you'll probably get more for your money by buying a new one than getting it repaired. Unless you know a tech that will give you a really good deal on the upgrade(like mouse).

5 year old PC = antique

And Compaq's are a pain and $$$$ to keep going due to so many proprietary parts.

If you are taking it to a service shop you will probably not get your moneys worth out of paying to get it fixed.

Edit: But you should find out exactly what is messed up on it. Because there is a chance it's something minor like the Power Supply....in that case you can get it fixed pretty cheaply. But I'd still reccomend you start looking for a newer PC.

Yeah it definitely sounds like a busted power supply. That just happened recently on my PC and its pretty old too.

Yeah it sounds like it's probably either the Power Supply or the MotherBoard...if it's the MB she's definitely better off getting a new PC.

No, it is not bad luck.

My mom actually gave me a laptop not to long ago, so God provided me with a new computer before my old one even died.

I just switched from one to the other this morning. Was no problem whatsoever.

Also, I was planning on making the laptop my primary computer when I move next week anyway.

When I installed Norton's anti virus on it, it firewalled my wireless internet card.
What should I use instead or is there a way to adjust the Norton so I can use it and my wireless card?

Forget Norton or any other all-powerful and invasive AV programs. Find some downloads for Spyware Doctor, Registry Mechanic, Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Windows Cleanup and run them when you need to. I hope you're at least semi-nerdy cause if you can't find some readily available and free cracked copies it's going to be pricey. If you think you're up to it, you can register for an awesome downloads forum at http://forumw.org and check out the applications section. They have everything you'll ever need.

I don't think she needs all of that.

On the downside, there are a few problems with AVG that need to be taken seriously. For example, AVG has a horrible track record in the Virus Bulletin tests of antivirus software with only 2 passes and 19 fails.

http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?avg.xml

Another thing I found out about AVG it may not be 100% truthful as a buddy of mine warns others.

AVG ANTI VIRUS WARNING

Heads up guys...

AVG Anti Virus is NOT our Friend...

FACT:

I have a Keygen for a certain program that I‘ve used many times.
All the Sudden, AVG reported it as having a Virus...

I first thought is was just a delayed Definitions issue.
But the more I thought about it, the program I was using, Never
gave me a problem. And this is not the first time AVG has done this
with Keygens and Patches.

So, I used a different computer Without AVG and ran the Keygen,
I also scanned the Keygen with Panda and Norton Anti Virus. No Virus Found.

After running the Keygen, it worked Fine and I wrote the Key produced
down on paper and tried it on the first computer. It Worked Fine.

I then re-scanned the computer that produced the Key with both (up to date)
Panda and Norton, AGAIN... No Virus Found and the System Works Fine.

AVG is a Good Anti Virus program. BUT, apparently AVG is taking it
upon themselves to be our Moral Police. USERS BEWARE...

Not only did AVG report this Keygen as having a Virus (it does Not)
it completely DISABLED it. Made it unusable on the first computer.

AVG is deciding (without your knowledge or approval) what they will lie about and what they will DISABILE on your personal property...

I‘m done with this BS Software and that BS Company...

Its up to you... Just letting you know what happened to me...

USERS BEWARE...
AVG Anti Virus is NOT our Friend...

AVG is ok photoshop is talking about if you do a lot of downloading off the torrent sites AVG tries to go beyond protecting you and actually keeps some of the code busters from working as seen here in this link.

http://btjunkie.org/torrent/AVG-Anti-Virus-8-Pro-key/39761878caf0d650afc03de7a944959af573a3a559c2

As for Norton? I love Norton, as long as folks keep using it I will always have a job.
I have never worked on more PC/notebooks that had Norton and needed to be cleaned.

It also slows down your PC. and is almost impossible to get rid of. You have to actually download a Norton remover or reformat your HD to get rid of it. It's right up there with AOL and Herpes.

Right now I am using Threat Fire and will know after about a week if its what it says it is.

Since I usually wipe out my HD every 40 days I like to use Avast it gives you 59 days of free service. :smokin

Mouse I'm calling bullshit on that. I've used AVG for @6-8 years now and never had the slightest problem anywhere about anything. Never gotten a virus, in fact I've surfed infected sites no problems whatso ever...and I've used plenty of keygens on my computer. Plenty of crackers too :smokin

About the only thing AVG doesn't work particularly well aginst are hijacking programs...but what does?

The reason I started using it in the first place was because it detected trojans and it wasn't even advertised as a trojan software.

Futhermore...every bit of PC work I have done for anyone(and this includes being a tech for a law office), I am have put that program on there...and no one I've ever done work for has so much mentioned having a virus.

Maybe it's the new version that does it or something(I've stayed with the last free version)...but historicaly AVG has been the shit. Granted I haven't used any kegens or crackers in a while so maybe they added something to it(and BTW pretty sure that's illegal)...

Maybe that have started going after keygens...but let's face it, Angel is unlikely to be using keygens any time soon.

The only viruses that get past this thing are maybe custom made viruses that are brand spanking new IME.

In any case...I don't think AVG is going to be free anymore...the message I am getting is that the version I use is outdated as of May 31st and I notice all their new versions seem to be shareware.

whottt
05-27-2008, 01:29 AM
Norton or Symantec or what it's called now sucks...you couldn't pay me to use it, on that I agree with mouse. McAfee does too(if it's even still around)...

Best thing to do is search outsome freeware version by some company attempting to start up...they make them not suck because they have aspirations of becoming a pay version and they know if they suck that won't happen. I'bve been using freeware Antivirus since about 1998(can't remeber what I used before AVG but it was freeware that became pay too).

Also a lot of college students will develp programs that are pretty effective against most stuff(college studends always make the best programs IMO).

Never use Norton...they're the ones that make the viruses.

What's funny is that guy in mouses story acts like Norton is the more reliable detection program...

The reason I use it is because it is the best, it's always caught stuff the others don't.

And just because his computer wasn't acting funny doesn't mean he didn't have a virus/trojan...not all of them make your computer work funny, in fact some of them don't want to be detected or noticable at all depending on their purpose.

There used to be this stealth trojan out that would turn your PC into a porn server for this website. They'd store data on your computer, porn images, they'd use it as back up or a secondary server to save their own server being overloaded and a bunch of people had it and their PC being used in service to this website never even knew it...and that's just one example.

Is that that the stuff they sell in the spystores? I had some guy try to sell me that remote spy thing one time. It used to cost a hundred bucks and you could only use it once per time. I also think I know someone whose husband used that other stuff on her. In any case...dude I am talking normal stuff.

If that's the stuff I think it is, it's completly undectable by any program(or it was at the time it came out) and nothing less than a reformat will get rid of it....so it's not like AVG fails where other programs succeed with that stuff(or it didn't last time I checked).

Free AVG is not a very good anti virus program. You may need to get a registry cleaner to delete it from your windows registry. That is one way that they can keep coming back even with anti virus. Are you able to delete it from the vault?
You may be able to find a registry cleaner that has a free trial that you can use to get rid of it.

But I've tried EWIDO before when you were reccomending it a few months ago, in fact I think I used it when I was devirusing that PC a few months ago, but it didn't get rid of the viruses either. I had to manually go through and locate and delete all the virus files. I think I left it on the PC in case she got any viruses. But it seems like a high maintenance piece of AV to me and it did not get rid of them, nor did it detect all of them. I know I didn't see fit to keep it on my personal PC after using it.

Straight up. I actually keep a 500 GB drive in my machine, but it's hot swap so I think I'm all good. Even so, I never use more than 100 or so GB's of it because everything gets backed up on my 2 externals.

That's what they said about the first 6 GB hard drives. And the first 40 GB.

If my hard drive crashes, I either restore it with a backup or re-download what I need. That's why you back stuff up.

Besides have you ever tried to sell a PC with more than 300 GBs? You will be lucky to get 200.00 for 2.8 ghz and DVD burner.

Depends on what you're selling. You can buy a new laptop for $600 these days, so you're not going to get good return on ANY used computer product. It's a fact, has nothing to do with the amount of HD space available, and is completely irrelevant to the matter at hand.

Trust me you go download I love Lucy it's 52 GBs

MASH is 43 GBs That's 95 GBs already. Anyone who has 300 or more GBs has a crap load of Music or movies and you don't get all that w/o a Trojan or two.

What I hate is when your 98% from downloading a huge file and your XP Activation runs out. :lmao

If I only get 250 to 200 for my Desktops as it is,why would I waste another 99.00 dollars on a 500 GB HD? Pass what your smoking brah!

I don't intend to sell my computer?

I want a lot of data at a good price?

Two 750 GB 7200 Rpm hard drives with a 16mb cache will run you a total of about $260 from newegg. I guess if both of those go out, you'd have issues, but that's why I'm not using two hard drives.

I have two 250 GB internal hard drives, and a 250 GB external. I plan to add either a 500 GB or a 750 GB external in the future. And that's paltry to what a lot of my friends have, a couple of whom have already broken the 3 TB mark.

Oh dear god, losing that series would really upset me. I'm sure that it would just kill me to wait for the torrent to finish! What would I do in the 2-3 weeks without ILL!?!? I guess I'll just have to re-download it in about 10 minutes at the next LAN*.

*If I liked ILL, that is.

New. That's used. Obviously you can make some $$$ by reselling those computers. The computer I just bought was a ridiculous value, because it was 2 months old. Quad Core, 4 gigs of Ram, 8800GTS, 22", Vista, tons of games, under a grand. I could resell the thing for $1600.

Vista,

That's where you lost me. Did you know people are complaining PowerISO is giving them problems with Vista. Do you use it?

1 month ago WARNING PEOPLE!!!
THIS PROGRAM CRASHED MY COMPUTER SEVERELY...
AFTER INSTALLATION I WAS PROPMPTED TO REBOOT WHICH I DID NOT DO STRAIGHT AWAY.

AFTER A REBOOT, MY COMPUTER STARTED AND THEN ONCE THE PROGRAM STARTED I GOT A BLUE SCREEN GIVING ME AN ERROR PROPMT WHICH LED TO AN INVOLUNTARY RESTART.

I WAS FORCED TO START MY PC IN SAFE MODE, THEN UNINSTALL THE PROGRAM....AFTER THIS MY PC WORKED FINE...

IF THIS HAPPENS AND YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO FOLLOW THIS:-
-ONCE YOUR PC STARTS UP, A BLACK SCREEN SHOULD APPEAR ASKING YOU WHAT MODE TO START IN; FROM THE LIST CHOOSE ‘SAFE MODE‘

-ONCE YOUR DESKTOP LOADS ETC CLICK THE START BUTTON AND OPEN YOUR ‘CONTROL PANEL‘

-FROM THE CONTROL PANEL SELECT ‘PROGRAMS AND FEATURES‘

-WAIT UNTIL YOUR PC POPULATES THE LIST OF INSTALLED PROGRAMS ON YOUR COMPUTER

-SEARCH FOR ‘PowerISO‘ SELECT IT AND CLICK ‘UNINSTALL‘

-IT WILL PROMPT AN AUTOMATIC RESTART WHICH I DID NOT DO, AFTER A MANUAL RESTART MY PC WORKED FINE.

NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING THIS WILL HAPPEN TO EVERYONE BUT IT DID HAPPEN TO ME, TWICE, AS I REINSTALLED IT TO DOUBLE CHECK IT WAS THIS PROGRAM. DOWNLOAD WITH CARE.

ALSO FOR THE RECORD I AM USING WINDOWS VISTA HOME EDITION...

Wouldn't surprise me. I use DaemonTools for everything. Never have any problems.

Yes, Vista. It's been supremely awesome for me thus far, despite not being quite as stable as XP. I can understand the uproar over many people not liking it. But if you have enough RAM, Vista is a pretty solid OS in my experience. Direct x 10 is a must, and it has far superior networking options.
