Mandy and I have been researching honeymoon destinations, and have come up with a few ideas. We have a budget of 3k, but would love to spend way less than that.

A few of our ideas so far.

A Cruise - Don't know where to yet, but most likely a Caribbean one. The biggest problem with a cruise is that i get very very motion sick. Have any of you been on a cruise, and did you have any problems with the motion? I've had a lot of people tell me that the since the ships are so big, you don't feel a thing. I'm dubious, cause I blow chunks riding in a car with a bad alignment.

Sandals Jamaica - This sounds pretty cool. All inclusive sounds good, but it's pretty pricey when you include the flight price.

New York City - I've always wanted to go, but we are leaving at the end of May. Summer in New York doesn't have the appeal to me that winter would.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks guys
Matthew

I have motion sickness too, and the first day of a cruise is always rough. People who say you don't feel a thing are full of shit. After the first day, you should be better unless of course you are pregnant (which I did once) then you'll feel like dying the whole time.
NYC is wonderful any time of year. :tu

The cruise is the ticket. You may get sick the first four hours but I have been told by KIM (who you can ask many questions her father works for a cruise ship). They have new pills that remedy that. And the huge ships hardly move once they are at sea.

They dock every day so you get to explore ...on land, the different destinations. You get to go horse back riding on the beach or explore the coral reefs.

Then it's back on the ship where you get to go play black jack and win some of that money back you spent.

You eat for free but you pay for drinks. Kim's family take bottles of booze in their suitcases they rarely inspect them.

You might want to get an all inclusive cruise packaged, that way your horse back riding and your deep sea exploring is already paid for.

If you do your homework you can have the time of your life for only 1,200.00 per person.

Kim spends only 600.00 she just likes the different islands and gambling on board. But I am sure if I gave her an extra 200.00 she would swim with the dolphins.

How long of a trip are you planning on? Personally I like Cabo on that budget. Try Hotwire.com and see what you come up with.

No set amount of time. We'd like as many days for the money as possible.

The 3k is just for the plane ride and the hotel. We are planning on bringing more money with us for spending and what not.

I hear Olivia's has wedding specials.

There is also this motel off Culebra that now has AM radio, if you're interested.

Hilton Head Island is the way to go. Very nice beaches, plenty of golf and sun, plus it is in the USA so you don't need to worry about passports, weird restaurants, different customs etc. Also, Savannah Georgia is an hour away and it is a great, historical city. Having a horse and buggy tour through there is definetly a great experience. Same for Charleston SC.

Kauai. Lots of condos to rent overlooking the ocean and the mountains - much more privacy than hotels, but there are some of those too if you absolutely must. Great weather and scenery. Snorkeling. Beaches. Mountain biking. Hiking. Camping. Not millions of other people. Not as commercial as Maui or Oahu.

This would be nice in spring, but in summer or early fall it's way too hot and humid. Too many critters too.

Yeah, it definetly gets warm in the summer, but its warm pretty much everywhere. It would help if we knew what kind of vacation you wanted? Do you want mountains, a tropical beach, golf, culture etc?

She would kill me if I tried to golf! Something tropical probably. We are gonna talk to our travel agent about the all inclusives in Jamaica and The Bahamas. See what kind of deal we can get.

We also have a cruise that leaves from Galveston the day after our wedding and visits cozumel, jamaica and some other places that is in our price range. I'm just really really worried about me getting sick on the ship.

I have been on a cruise that went to Cozumel, my advice would be to stay on the ship, that place is a dump. Jamaica is nice though. I have been to Bermuda and the Bahamas as well, and unless you are big on people, places and geography, I have always prefered tropical vacations in the United States. Destin Fla, Hilton Head and Balboa Beach Ca would be great places to investigate. You could get pretty far with 3000$ in Destin and Hilton Head as well.

Fuck Sandals, go to Kingston and smoke some herb with the locals. Why go to Jamaica to surround yourself with smarmy American couples? You can do that in South Beach.

I'm just really really worried about me getting sick on the ship.

You should be. Those ships are disgusting.

Matt,

They make motion sickness patches that you can get from your Doctor.....just slap one on before you get on the boat and they usually give you enough to last you through your trip. That's what I'm going to get Billy if we ever do anything that involves water and boats....he has the same problem....hope it helps!!!

Oh and I went on a cruise to the caymans, jamaica, and the bahamas....it was a BLAST!!!! you should def. go check it out

With all due respect while these work for most people there are some who they do not help - my father-in-law being one. I would want to do a dry (should that be wet?) run before taking a long cruise only to find out that oops, they don't work for me.

Cruises are cool, tho.

You're worried about motion sickness? I'd be much more concerned that cruise ships are incubation chambers for infectious disease.

Norovirus
Norovirus infections continue to be a problem on cruise ships. In 2002, there were 25 reported outbreaks, with 2,648 passengers becoming ill from the virus.[8] There have been a number of voyages where hundreds of passengers have become ill.[9][10][11][12] Outbreak investigations by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have shown that transmission among cruise ship passengers is almost wholly person-to-person; water supplies have never been implicated.

Legionella
Other pathogens which are known to be a problem on board cruise ships include Legionella, the bacteria which causes Legionnaires' disease. Legionella can colonise the domestic water systems and whirlpool spas as well as cooling systems used on board. Legionella, and in particular the most virulent strain, Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, can cause infections when inhaled as an aerosol or aspirated.

Cozumel sucked for me. Didn't enjoy it at all.
As for all-inclusive, you might want to try one in the Bahamas. I loved Nassau, and Atlantis is really nice.
If you're up for the beachy weather, as you said you want something tropical, St. Maarten's nice too... I live there and it's really nice to visit! I'm sure you can google some stuff on it. Except we don't have any all-inclusive resorts here. St. Thomas is nice too.
I love cruises. I'm not too sure about the motion sickness, because I don't have that problem. But they do have medicines available and I do not think it should be an issue.

I've done all of the above.

If you've never done NY then that's what I would do. Broadway show, Central Park, Museums, Times Square, Eating, Shopping, Sports, the list goes on and on.

I've seen the commercials for Atlantis. That place looks massive, but it's not an adults only place. I really don't want a bunch of kids running around during the honeymoon.

Thanks for the tips on the Virgin Islands. Mandy was interested in that simply because of Timmy. We will definitely look into it.

Use an Agency get the best deals!! Alaskan cruise normally 3,500 for 900.00 etc...

Go to Colorado and ski, get some snow in your boxers! you live in San Antonio the Humidifier of Texas! You deserve to cool off! :smokin

Then hit Vegas, and for 800 dollars each you have left over do a cruise. I have seen it done. We went on a bad ass cruise for 450.00 each. and then we went on a ski trip for 375.00 each then we hit Vegas for 50 dollars a day at the Mirage.

Your looking at 900.00 per person for a time of your life!

And since you have 3 Grand that leaves you 1000 each for spending cash! :tu

I've gotten motion sickness a few times in my life, so the first day of the cruise I went on last year was kind of brutal - but that also could have been because it was 40 ft seas in the Pacific. My grandmother has been on a bunch of cruises in the Caribbean and says that it's a lot easier there with the calmer waters. After the first day even in the Pacific, though, I was fine. Cruises are pretty awesome - I would definitely spring for the balcony state rooms if at all possible, though.

In Colorado, you can do a lot if you two like the outdoors. You can do Hot Air Balloon, horse back in the mountains. You can go biking, white water rafting, and so many other things. Its nice out there.

I've been on 4 cruises to the Caribbean, and personally find them to be the most enjoyable of vacations.

On small craft in the ocean, I've gotten sick a time or two, but never on a cruise ship. Typically the seas in the Caribbean are pretty calm. If the seas are rough, you can feel a slight sway at times. But it's nothing like bobbing up and down on a small fishing boat. The ships all have stabilizers to help reduce the motion.

As someone else mentioned, there are bracelets you can wear that should help w/ the nausea. I think they're called 'Sea Bands'. Dramamine is available on the ship, usually given out for free when you board if you ask the purser. But the most common aid I've seen used are the patches. Place it behind your ear, and you're good to go. Just make sure you put it on well before you reach the ship. I think they say 6 or 8 hours before. I used the patch on my very first cruise just to be safe, and decided I didn't need it a couple of hours into the cruise. But you'll probably see a third of the people using them the first couple of days.

Another thing I'd suggest is getting a cabin somewhere in the middle of the ship. You don't want to be near either end as you'll feel more of the motion. Plus, you can hear, feel the rumble of the engines if you're near the very back of the ship.

Something else to consider is the itinerary. How many islands, and how many days at sea? I personally get bored on the days at sea. I'd rather be out doing things, seeing things. There's pools, and sunning. Casinos, movies and shows in the theaters, and activities arranged by the cruise line. There's plenty of food to eat at all times of day or night. Women tend to love the Spa and Massage deal on days at sea. Balcony suites are great if you just want to lay out and not be bothered by all the people.

Jamica, St Thomas, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Fla Keys, are all popular places. They all offer their own thing to do or see. Curacao, St Maarten, St Kitts, St Lucia, St Barts, Martinique, Barbados, Grenada are my most favorite spots.

Do research though. A couple of people mentioned that Cozumel sucks. I kinda agree, but there's always alternatives. When I went to Cozumel, we actually chartered a plane to take us to Chichen Itza for the day. It's still one of my favorite vacation memories. You won't find a Cruise Line offer such excursions, but if you read up, you'll find alot of options that are available to you.

I've often found the Ships offered excursions to be a bit over priced. I've had good luck going my own way. Getting my own Taxi, asking the locals for the best diving/snorkeling spots. The secluded beaches. The real view of the islands. You can book private charters for snorkeling/diving/fishing on line. Just be sure to get back to the ship on time, because they will leave your ass behind!

Don't buy the touristy trinkets without haggling and bargaining prices. Same for the Taxi's. They'll give you a price ... counteroffer it.

You'll probably want to choose a cruise to the Eastern or Western Caribbean as they usually leave from Florida. The Southern Caribbean trips depart form Puerto Rico which tacks on quite a bit to the air fare.

The shorter cruises, 3, 4 days, often times have a lot of kids on them. The longer cruises, 10 or 12 days, are usually a much older crowd. MUCH older. I did a 10 day Southern Caribbean on Princess cruise line and the average age must have been over 60. The people just weren't fun.

Nothing worse than trying to relax by the pool, when there's 20 kids from 6 to 15 running around and screaming. The nightclubs can be filled by 15 years olds asking you to get them a drink!

I find the 7 day cruises to have the best balance of the type of people on it.

Princess Cruise Line tends to be a bit more of a luxury event, with more snooty people looking for things to have a fu-fu flair. Whereas Carnival and Royal Caribbean are more about the average Joe. More about fun than luxury.

I love cruising. There's tons to do if you want to keep busy, or tons of time if you just want to kick back and relax. The Caribbean weather is beautiful. The color of the water is amazing. I just don't see how you can go wrong if that's what you decide!

rita929 and i seriously considered jamaica (strawberry hill -- in the mountains; sandals and the caves on the beach; also the ritz was priced about the same as the other results)

but we're honeymooning in san francisco

250 round trip plane tickets from austin, wine tours, city stuff, etc

other places we looked at ($3,000 was our budget too)

were

vancouver :tu I really wanted to go because you can hit up the city of vancouver, go up to whistler and have a mountain resort, and/or spend time on victoria island. can do whale watching etc

we also looked at argentina to go skiiing but couldn't find cheap enough plane tickets

plane tickets to paris were actually pretty reasonable, a lot cheaper than anything else to europe

cruises are incredibly lame unless you like giant floating festering pits of disgustingness that stop briefly just long enough so swarming locals can hawk cheap crap at you and gawk at the stupid looking tourists

San Francisco is definitely in the running. What time of the year are you going?

Cruise ships, as long a you choose a large one i.e. Voyage of the Seas or one of her sister ships, are very stable, and you hardly realize you are even moving.

And the things with cruises, everything is paid up front, except for the stops in ports of call, and any daytime adventure you would like to try. All the food you can possibly eat, entertainment galore, movies, some even have rock climbing walls and bowling alleys on board.

Have been on a cruise twice to the Caribbean. First time was a smaller ship, and yeah, it did get rough at times. But if you would like to see several places in a short time, that's the way to go.

Just stay out of the taxis on some of the islands. Those guys drive like drunk indians.
