I hope he slips into the second round, mid to late, he'd fit in well. I love his size and shooting ability. Complete player, gotta love complete players.

Several people have mentioned him as a possible good pickup.

DX loves this guy, says his feel for the game and all-around talent levels are excellent. He is, of course, not very athletic.

I'm very much hoping for him with the Toronto pick. A big, rangy multi-talented guy like Odom isn't horrifically athletic; I wonder how this guy stacks up.

Not an athlete, but apparently has enough size to mitigate that a bit.

I'll wait for the measurements to come out to get really excited, but he could be a very good choice if his frame can take some more weight.

according to DX he's quite a good passer for his size and has a high bb iq. sounds good to me.

Well he's good 6'9.75" in shoes with a mediocre wingspan of the same 6'9.75".

Kind of Mike Dunleavy-ish measurements. Good enough for me. Unfortunately there are no combine results for him. Definitely worth a workout.

Pat Calathes 6-10 204 SF St. Joseph's Sr. --
10.0 ppg, 50% fg, 71% ft

Had a subpar week, didn’t do too much to disappoint nor impress and he sat out the last game with an injury. He has a great feel for the game and is able to make good reads in transition and in the half court. His quickness is good and he knows how to use shot fakes and little jabs to free himself up. The long NBA 3 is giving him fits (he went 1-3 on the week) and his awkward release seems to take a lot out of his rhythm which hurts his range. It is always nice to see a guy being able to handle the ball and pass as well as he does at 6-10, but that height is almost completely negated by his weak body and complete lack of post up game. This limits him to strictly playing on the perimeter where he is not as explosive as other wing players and lacks the shooting consistency as well. So instead of having this versatile and multi talented 6-10 player, he is pretty much a 6-10 small forward lacking the necessary skill and playing out of position. People are always enamored by tall wing players and because of that he will probably be drafted, but Calathes is still a very long way from ever being a rotation worthy player.

Pat Calathes , 6-10, Senior, Small Forward, St. Joe’s
10 points, 3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1 turnover, 50% FG, 33.3% 3PT, 17 minutes

Rodger Bohn

The Pre-Draft Camp circuit has proven to be a comfortable setting for Calathes, a 6'10 small forward from St. Joe's. After a very impressive performance at Portsmouth back in early April, he carried over his strong play to Orlando, packing on about 10 pounds of muscle in the process.

It is rare that you find a player approaching the seven foot mark that is legitimately a small forward, but Calathes is one of those rarities. He is blessed with an offensive skill set of someone much smaller, looking completely content playing outside on the perimeter facing the basket against much quicker defenders.

Calathes showed off his ability to extend his shooting range to the NBA three point line, both in the drills and in the games themselves. Already a proven shooter from the collegiate arc (40% 3PT as a senior), he appears perfectly comfortable hitting the jumper from the NBA mid-range area.

Not only a shooter, Pat is a surprisingly effective slasher for a player his stature. He goes left and right equally well, using his high basketball IQ to compensate for his lack of verticality. Even more impressive is the senior's passing ability for a small forward, evidenced by his dishing out a team-high 5 assists in day two of the camp. His aforementioned basketball IQ and court vision come into play here, where he shows the ability to refrain from turning the ball over when a playmaker.

Defense is the area of Calathes' game that could stand for most improvement, as he at times lacks the lateral quickness to effectively stay in front of his man. His witty play allows him to compensate for his lack of athleticism only temporarily, before his lack of ability on that end is exposed. Likewise his lack of bounce hurts him on the offensive end, where he gets his shot blocked more than one would like out of a player his size.

Calathes strong play in the two camps so far have virtually made him a lock to get drafted once the time comes in June. Private workouts will ultimately determine exactly how high the small forward lands, but he did virtually all he could to bolster his stock in Orlando.

I'm not sure 1-3 from NBA 3-point range is 'giving him fits'.

I love his shooting, height and IQ, but we need someone with more athleticism/speed on the perimeter. In our system I'M afraid he'd be exposed on defense a lot by quicker wings and on the defensive rotations needed.

If he drops to 45 and Forbes is off the board, he's as good a choice as any. I'd consider him a good project for the Toros to see if his body responds to the strength and conditioning program he would surely be put on.

Ahead on the weekend itinerary were New Orleans, San Antonio and possibly a visit to the Los Angeles Lakers for Calathes.

Calathes sounds like the one legit "Long Three" candidate for the second round. He'd probably be worth pick 45 to see if he can bulk up and become a more complete player in Austin.

I'd definitely take him in the second. Tall, versatile, smart. At the very least he can figure a way to help at least a little.

I know about him. He was an adequate player on a St. Joseph's team that went 9-7 in the A10 Conference. He looks reasonably good against mid-quality college players. But his game isn't going to hold up against NBA-level players any time soon, if ever. He's too skinny to play with the big boys, and too slow to play with the little ones. The only, and I mean only, NBA players he would be able to keep in front of him on defense are the ones who will run over him. The biggest thing going for him is his ability as a stand-still shooter - and I have some doubts that he can keep that up with much-quicker, and tougher, NBA players flashing out to defend his shot.

In theory, it might be interesting to have a 6'10" player at the 2 or 3, but reality would set in very quickly. He's a recipe for match-up nightmares - for his own team. I hate to be so negative, but I honestly don't think there's a chance in the world that he ever sees minutes in the NBA. Not even as a 8-10 minute per game backup. My guess is he doesn't get drafted. He may get a look by a few teams, and then he's off to the Euros.

Edit:

Calathes was on the A10 All-Conference team, listed below. Calathes was probably the best of the bunch in college. There are a couple that are better NBA prospects, but none of them are ready to contribute this year.

First-Team
Pat Calathes Dionte Christmas, Will Daniels, Gary Forbes, Brian Roberts
Second-Team
Josh Duncan, Bryant Dunston. Darnell Harris, Drew Lavender, Mark Tyndale
