View Full Version : Stimulus rebate is a crock!!!

Jimcs50
06-03-2008, 11:13 AM
My accountant just informed me that I am not eligible for the rebate because even though I paid over $133,000.00 in income tax last year, I made over the cap which was set at $ 175,000.00 in adjusted gross income.

So, people that paid 5 K or less in income taxes will get $600-$1200 back, and I, who get raped every year by Uncle Sam get nothing at all.

I guess they came up with that 175K cap, because congressmen fall below that cap....how coincidental.

So much false information being spread here.

Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

Q. Is my stimulus payment taxable?

A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment.

Q. If my stimulus payment is not going to affect my 2008 tax refund or increase the tax I owe next year, why is it I need to retain the letter that lists how much I received?

A. In the event you do not qualify for the full amount on your 2007 return but you do on your 2008 return, you will need to have the letter as a record of the amount you previously received. [New 4/11/08]

Stop calling it a rebate then and just call it a bribe then. The people like me who own the small businesses in this country are getting tired of footing the fucking bill for every problem this govt gets into. Yes, my business in successful, and I make a good living, but I worked my ass off for 8 years in school while most of you fuckers were out getting drunk and partying, and I worked all through school at night because nobody paid a dime for my education, and I did not get one penny from the govt without having to pay it back. After school, I worked 50 hrs a week for a couple of other dentists for less than 12 dollars an hour, because I could not get a loan without collateral and because of my student loans, so please get off your self rightous high horse and stop busting my chops for bitching for about not getting anything back from my fucking govt after always being the one that pays and pays and pays. I have a right to want a small rebate for the close to 3 million dollars that I have paid in income taxes the last 24 years....fuck face.

Call me an idiot, but why would a government 9 trillion in debt, give a $2,100.00 rebate (husband and 3 children) to someone that paid $2,500.00 in taxes after their 7,000.00 tax refund which they got the month before?

It would seem that the people that paid the lion's share of the taxes collected would get some relief as well....in all fairness. Either make it equitable or do not do anything at all....

Your first mistake is assuming the gov't wants to do anything logical.

Your second mistake, that it will do anything 'equitable.' It wasn't called the "Tax Equity Act of 2008."

Your third is not recognizing the political realities of the day which made the repubs agree to a cap so that the dems would vote for it.

The fourth is not realizing that giving $2100 to someone making $50K a year makes a much bigger difference in spending habits than to someone making $500K (or more).

The final mistake is expecting anyone here to be sympathetic. :lol

you should be happy you aren't getting one. This country will be sunken by it's own debt in 15 years, you getting a rebate check will only add to the problem. I love how we are operating the biggest deficit in the history of our country yet our government has the balls to shell out this money to people. It's all an election year crock of shit, and people wouldn't need this $600 if they were smart with their money in the first place and got us in this mess we are in...but citizens follow their leaders and as long as our leaders think money grows on trees so will it's citizens. end rant.... but wait till China takes over the US and all the proud, chest beating Americans have to eat crow and pay back the man

American's as a whole are not financially responsible, and that is proven by the mess we are in. Seriously, who the fuck signs up for a A.R.M.?--people that want more than they can afford. People buy boats, cars, houses, everything when they can't afford half of it. The problem is that our government does the same thing. They are in a war that costs us a average of 22 billion dollars a month--A MONTH!! Right now our national debt is growing at a rate of $1,000,000 a minute--yet they apporve tax cuts for the top 5% in America. So let me make sure I get this right: the unwealthy join the military because they can't afford school on their own, they go to war and risk their lives--but they are also paying for it because they don't see those same tax cuts. meanwhile, the wealthy sit at home watch the war on TV, while their kids are off a private college...and the money they save on their taxes is stashed away in a bank never to be seen again (remember the wealthy are also the cheapest). I know I'm twisted in some of my views, but everyone has to admit that what has been happening in the past will not work in the future. This country is about to his a giant brick wall and everyone's eyes will be shocked when those days come. Here is something else to look forward to a couple years down the road...end of social security funds...wow you think America has a mess on it's hands now!

and while I'm on it..what's with the sense of entitlement? Why does the government owe you or anyone money? This is what is going to F up social security- people that make $175k a year and don't need the money at all, but feel they are entitled to it because they paid into it. Everyone has the right to live comfortably, and I'm all for people making as much as they can, but there has to be a point when someone can be respobile and say to themselves 'you know what, I have plenty of money, I don't need $1500 a month from SS" My generation (20somethings) will have a big argument because we pay into it and we won't see a dime of it. So who is right here? The guy that has made 200k a year for the last 20 years and takes it because he paid into it, or the 20somethings that pay into it and won't see a single nickel because the generation before them was a)too greedy or b)wasn't responsible enough to take care of themselves when it came time for retirement--they needed the government or the company they worked for to hold their hand and walk them into retirement with bags of money

And I know that the Government officials wrote this rebate plan so they could take advantage of the situation- but you know what: the government is corrupt, but whose fault is it? Is it them for being corrupt? or is it us for turning our backs on it, acting like nothing can be done and still voting for them everytime an election comes. People bitch about shit all they want, but you know something, things CAN change, being a government official takes nothing more than running for office.

Why is that thought dumb? Why did both Bill Gates and Warren Buffet publicly speak out again receiving their own personal Social Security money? They want to raise awreness that you don't have to take the money just because it's owed to you. If you don't need it don't take it. Did you know that if the top tax bracket didn't take their social security, it could delay the social security flush for almost 15 years. Think about that, just by a bunch of rich people saying "you know, I make millions I don't need the money" it can extend the life of the social security funds for a bunch of years---that small number of people would benefit thousands and thousands of people. Not only that, Social Security is just like a personal mutual fund: the longer you leave it in the more it grows..so if a guy that has plenty of money decides he doesn't need SS, it could help 2-3 families that do need the money years down the road.

So all the money the "rich" have paid in shouldn't go to them, but to someone else.

I was waiting for this answer, thanks. So now argue me how it is fair that I am 24, paying into social security each year when a) I will never see it (so ultimately I am paying for others that couldn't take care of themselves) and b) could go to my own IRA or 401k to better the future of this country. But as it works now, I have to pay for myself AND pay for others. Now why is it too much to ask billionaires to not take money they don't need?

Its not fair just like your idea isn't fair. Nothing fair will ever happen. The system needs to be torn down but it will never happen. Emphasis mine

Quick answer: Because it is their money.

If they elect to not withdraw it than that is their choice, but forcing them to abandon money taken from their wages smacks of socialism.

And as far as you being 24 and paying into a busted and fucked up system; I'm 40 and have been doing it as well. Don't rely on the government to take care of you and fund your own IRA or 410(k).

here is fair

right now at 24 years old, I pay roughly 7% of my income to Social Security, 5% to a 401k, and 3% to a IRA I have on the side. So basically I'm paying almost as much for someone else's retirement as I am for myself- and why? because they couldn't do it themselves when they were my age so they needed the government to step in and hold their hands through the whole process. The government needs us 20somethings to a) pay into it to keep it a float just long enough so it doesn't crash on their watch and b)stay dumb to the whole thing and not question it.

lets look, Assuming I made 40k a year for the rest of my working life (lets hope not) but 7% a year that I pay but won't see I would have $595,000 at the age of 60 assuming I only returned 9% a year, now add that into the money I am already am setting aside and I have a very nice retirement fund even though I didn't earn a ton of money during my working life.

I'm down with privatizing it, and paying a small amount (2-3%) towards what used to be social security for the people that can prove they are in dire needs of checks each month. I don't think there would be much objection to this, it's just change, and people are resistant to change.

I actually don't like the idea of privatizing it. I think that the social security program, as originally designed, is quite sound. The problem is that in the 80-ish years since it was established, the funds have been used to bail the country out of financial trouble without being replenished, and that's why you and I and others our age likely won't see any of it.

OK, I see where you were coming from. But to answer the question:

http://www.nasi.org/publications3901/publications_show.htm?slide_id=7&cat_id=77

What happens to the funds that are not used immediately to pay benefits? By law, the funds are invested in special-issue Treasury securities that earn interest. In effect, the funds are loaned to the Treasury, which borrows the money just as it borrows money when it sells Treasury securities to the public. In other words, the surplus money collected by Social Security helps pay for the rest of the government. In return for the funds it loans to the government, the trust funds receive Treasury securities bearing a market rate of interest. The average interest rate on the portfolio held by the Social Security trust fund is about 6 percent.

Mutual funds invest; SS funds are being loaned to a creditor whose ability to pay the full amount back is increasingly in doubt given ever-expanding deficit spending. Trillions of dollars of debt is going to catch up with us one of these days; it could be argued that the recent fall of the US$ is due, in part, to this situation. What's amazing is that uber-creditors are still willing to loan the US money for such small returns. If China puts the brakes on financing US government debt things are going to go to hell in a handbasket.

I think even the super wealthy are seeing what a cluster fuck this war is doing to our country and economy.....this war will not last another year....but will it be too late?

that's the biggest misconception of what's wrong with our economy. There are enough legitamate reasons to oppose this war, but using money as a reason is ignorant. When it comes to the finances of this country, the #1 problem by a tremendous margin are all of the entitlement obligations. You may not want to hear it, but this country can't afford to pay for everyones housing, healthcare, retirement benefits, and welfare benefits through taxation. In the short-term we'll get away with this simple minded strategy because of our wealth, but it will eventually catch-up.

Universal healthcare, adequate retirements, and housing are all items everyone should have, but government is not the solution. God Forbid we have to rely on elected officials for our financial needs. At that point we become slaves.

America's credit and it's monetary system, along with all those millions you've managed to save in your own 401K, 401K roth or other investment vehicle, become worthless....so even if you think your doing the right thing.... opposing SS....funding your own retirement.... when the shit does hit the fan you'll be just as broke as the rest of us socialists....

Well initially I thought why complain when you make so much money? I mean my personal opinion is the government sends these checks because of us poor people being in debt. It was an excuse to 'help' us maybe I don't know, when really I would give up mine and wish everyone else would if we could just get a real plan going on here to fix this economy rather than handing out money for temporary fixes.

Like using tape to hold the starter on your car..

Anyways.

I am 23 and got mine today. I have been a complete dumb fool to be honest. I fell for a girl, and dicked around with her since I was 18. Never went to college or made anything of myself. Now that's all over and I can see clearly now, I find myself in a bit of a hole, and feeling way behind as my friends are further along than I am.

It's my own fault. But my check is going to my truck payment. It was going to go with my plan to start school, maybe do something with my life unlike the rest of my family. But I got behind, and was really hurting for the check to just make it back above water. The kicker is the truck is a 1999 Yukon, so bad on gas. Hahaha man oh man. Good thing is it's not through any dealership or anything, it's through a family friend.

I heard they might do stimulus checks again in 2 years. By then I will be 25 and hopefully have some money by then saved up for some kind of schooling and that check would just be a help. I'm just really trying to hold out as long as I can on going off to the Navy. I personally do not want to do the military thing, it's just not for me but with gas prices and a crummy job I might not have a choice.

So I thought more, and realized what if I did make it to your point one day Jim? Making good money and shit, I would feel really betrayed and screwed if I didn't get a check either. But like I said I think it's an excuse to give money to the poorer folk for a temp fix.

Social Security is a crock. I see people in my clinic everyday that absolutely MOOCH off of SS. They have the freakin' audacity to BRAG about how much their monthly check is and compare it to other patients' checks. I would say at least 70% of the clinic population is receiving SS and of that 70% maybe 25-30% actually need it. We get requests from the SS office for medical evaluations all the time on people younger than me (26)!!! They are handing this shit out to anyone! It's bullshit!

It shouldn't matter what a person makes. I am happy someone is living the American dream.

When Kori gives out hot wings at her GTGs she doesn't ask us what we weigh in order to determine how many wings we each get, so why should it matter what a person makes when giving out money?

I thought the whole purpose of giving out the money is so Bush can try somehow in his warped little mind, find a way out of our failed economy.

So jimc50 is not part of that economy?

I am one of the most generous people anyone knows, always helping friends and family in need of money and always picking up the check at restaurants when we are out with friends and family. I know what it is like to be without a lot of money(grew up with a single mom, worked from the time I was 10) and that is why I try to help all I can for those less fortunate....so spoiled, I am not.

As I said, I am not crying about the non rebate, I was just venting, because of the above mentioned bullshit that this govt is always pulling , just to help their own sorry asses.

:lol I know Jim, I was kidding. I've been a member here long enough to remember what you did for Duff. Your initial post just made you sound a little arrogant. Don't worry, you'll always be my sugardaddy :makeout :lol

No, that is a rebate from the Adult Video store for your 1000th purchase.....I can see how you confused the two.

I did sound like a greedy spoiled prick, now that a new day has dawned and I reread the post. Thanks for the nice things you said, but you were right in your first statement.

hey, even if some of us were to make a million dollars a year, we're still gonna throw a fit if we don't get the secret decoder ring that was promised by Toucan Sam in our box of cereal. The lousy Toucan promised that decoder ring and I'm gonna slap the purple off of his multicolored snout if he doesn't give me my friggin ring.

And all they have to do is put up with the occasional Boss-Goes-Off-The-Deep-End moment. :lol

Jim, I'll make you a deal. I'll send you my rebate check if you send me your salary for a month. :D

So I get my check the other day. I was expecting somewhere between 6 and 12 hundred, but it was $8000. I called to make sure it was no error, and when they looked me up they said consider it a gift, from all the "rich folk" out there.

Thanks Jim.

Jim's "special" employees get the "2-ball fix-all" as well!
