There was an investigation once here in S.A about mattress stores selling used mattresses and selling them as new. The news channel bought a few or something like that and then would open them up and look inside the mattress and notice all kinds of stuff like bed bugs, trash, hair, and etc.

No crap! We had something similiar happen here in Baltimore as well. The local news channel tried to talk to the Mattress store's owner and of course he declined.

Refurbishing old mattresses is a very common practice. I think it was 60 Minutes that did a piece on it a few years back. It's perfectly legal and supposedly every manufacturer does it. They said about the only thing you can do is ask them if you are buying a new or refurbished mattress and by law they have to tell you. Pretty gross.

The problem with this, of course is that a retailer may be told by the manufacturer/dealer that they are new when in fact they are refurbed. So they may think they are actually telling you the truth when in fact they are not. Or they could be flat-out lying and just trying to point fingers. It is really easy to pass the buck in retail.

This boggles the mind if true.

Best Buy sells you a refurb TV or PC but only has to tell you if you ask?
Car dealer sells you a refurb car but only has to tell you if you ask?
etc

dunno why the rules would be different for matresses ...

I didn't mean they only have to tell you if you ask. I meant that's about the only thing you can do to protect yourself from it.

I did not see that newscast until after I bought my mattresses. I have not had any problems though. Thank God.

One time (in band camp) I stayed at a Holiday Inn near Minute Maid Park in Houston. Well, we checked in in the early afternoon and just laid are bags down and went to go get something to eat. We came back and got ready to go see the game. We came back and fell asleep. We woke up the next morning and saw all these bed bugs at the foot of the bed. We jumped out of that bed really quick and showered. We headed down to the front desk and complained and didn't pay jack for that night. That was gross.

Employee sues Fox News over 'bedbugs'
Posted Fri May 30, 2008 8:06am AEST

A Fox News employee who says she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after being bitten by bedbugs at work filed a lawsuit against the owner of the Manhattan office tower where she worked.

Jane Clark, 37, a 12-year veteran of Fox News, a unit of News Corp, said she complained to human resources after being bitten three times between October 2007 and April 2008. She said she was ridiculed and the office was not treated for months.

Beacon Capital Partners, which owns the tower in midtown Manhattan, said in a statement that it had not been made aware of the problem and that it was the responsibility of tenants to manage infestations.

"As a prudent step, we are bringing in outside, independent experts to review the situation," the statement said.

The suit did not say how much Ms Clark was seeking in damages.

Ms Clark, who says she has been diagnosed with PTSD and can no longer work, has filed a separate workers compensation claim with News Corp, and the company is paying her medical bills and lost wages. A News Corp spokeswoman declined to comment because News Corp was not named in the lawsuit.

"They made a lot of mistakes," Ms Clark said through tears at a news conference at the office of her lawyer, Alan Schnurman, who said he has brought numerous bedbug cases.

"I didn't want my baby to get bitten. I was terrified of bringing it home," Ms Clark said.

She said she believed a colleague who used her work station on weekends, and who no longer works for Fox News, brought the infestation to the office. Ms Clark's home was never infested.

Ms Clark says she suffers nightmares and keeps a flashlight at her bedside so she can check for bugs during the night.

"It's their obligation to the working public to provide a safe environment," Mr Schnurman said.

What's hilarious is there are bugs living not on in your mattress, but your clothes, socks and undies.

They are called microbugs. And when you say the magic word they transform from bugs to ceiling fans.

From my understanding the law states tha if it is a refurbished mattress they have to label it with a yellow tag. New mattresses are supposed to be labeled with a white tag. Guess if they think they can get it away with it they sure will.

I had it out with the manager at the store as well, he was trying to exchange instead of refund me. Please believe he heard an earful. I sure will be contacting the Health Department and quite possibly contacting a few people i know that work for ABC and NBC.

I am so paranoid as far as purchasing another bed now. Thank God i still had'nt gotten rid of my old one. I guess I will be in a twin bed forever.

LOL at me having to lie in it...that was cold blooded. I'm just a sweet innocent young gal, who happens to LOVE the lakers.

Sad truth is that it's very possible for any and every new mattress set to have bed bugs. Typically, when you purchase a set, and have it delivered, part of the service is the disposal of the old mattress set. They pick it up, and throw it on the back of a truck ... that is also carrying new product that is going out for delivery.

It's like cross contamination in a kitchen. New product is wrapped in plastic ... but it's far from being considered air tight. Often times there are holes specifically put in the bags to allow for air flow and the dissipation of the odors associated with new foams.

Just because there are bed bugs visible on a set you bought, doesn't really mean it's a renovated or refurbished set. (not to say yours wasn't iminlakerland)

Bed bugs are simply becoming a major issues once again in this country. Movie theaters, offices, hotels ... they're everywhere, and we pick them up, and take them home. Prior to 1990 bed bugs were thought to be a thing of the past. But larger cities, Atlanta being a main one, are becoming infested with them.

Your large Mattress manufacturers (Sealy, Simmons ... etc etc) are not the ones who 'renovate' old mattresses.

Mattress renovators are 3rd party companies that buy up the old stuff super cheap, and sanitize them w/a germicide, and recover it. It's a very common practice, but as mentioned above, they're always supposed to be labeled w/ a yellow tag. They are easy to spot. And will be priced wayyyyyy less than newly manufactured bedding.

Any decent sized company, with any sort of history will not try to pass on 'renovated' as new. It's simply bad business. If it happens once, and they get caught, the company will be in jeopardy.

Buy from a reputable company. As much as we all want to save a few bucks, don't try going the 'warehouse' 'super special still in plastic' route where you're getting something for a stupid price. It's likely refurbished.

Where I work for example, all the old bedding that is picked up from customers, is sold for like 4 or 5 dollars each to 3rd parties that are 'sanitizing' them, recovering them, and selling them out of trailers, storage lots, old un-used store fronts. 'Like-New' is a term you'll hear alot. Often times hotels buy 'renovated' bedding. It's a more cost effective avenue for them.

But again, this is not something you typically find in most larger mattress store chains. What's more likely, is .... Many Mattress stores have 30 day exchange or return policies. When those beds are picked back up, they're often re-wrapped and sold. Again, a reputable company will clearly notate that it has been in someones home. Usually you can tell it's been slept on though. Slight wear, impressions, or pilling of fabric is noticeable. Some places like my employer, does not resell those mattresses.

Memory foam and Latex beds may be a safer route for some people as bed bugs and dust mites cant live in them. They're generally considered a healthier sleep environment. But there's also lack of support issues, heat complaints and chemically odors associated with them.
