View Full Version : When someone says "Bless you"...

SRJ

...after a sneeze, I get irritated. But I don't want to be a dick so I acknowledge it.

But haven't we learned that the soul is not trying to escape the body during a sneeze, therefore rendering "Bless you" absolutely pointless?

(I don't believe in a "soul" either, but that's got nothing to do with this issue)

Just say it. It doesn't mean anything.

I remember a hard-core atheist from college, who made it a point not to say "bless you" or "goodbye" because they were derived from theistic sayings. I thought he was being a bit silly.

Yeah, but you know what she meant, right?

I always say it, not to make sure the person's soul doesn't leave them but just to be polite. When you say it to a stranger, it's like saying, "You're not invisible just because I don't know you." When I sneeze around a group of people I don't know, I always appreciate when someone says it.

we have some weird sneezing etiquettes at work. the women on either side of me are different. i usually say Bless You when either of them sneezes. one says Thank You, and the other one says it only sometimes. I pretty much stopped saying Bless You to her, but to the other one I still say it. haha.. i guess I just go by what I feel from the person.

I say bless you all the time, it has nothing to do with thinking about your soul....just being polite.

I love saying it to folks, in a store. Especialy in a dressing room, where they can't see you:wow

Wow!
I'm always complaining about this! It's good to know I'm not alone :lol

I mean, when I'm in the middle of a few sneezes I really just want to be left the fk alone, I'm not interested in exchanging polite, illogical niceties.

Stalk a hot ass girl, wait until she sneezes, say bless you, get her number.

Be inconspicous about it though. If done right this should lead to sex.

Doesn't that depend on a dry versus wet sneeze, though:rolleyes?

I don't understand why we say "bless you" when somebody sneezes and blows loogies all over the room, yet a cougher gets nothing and actually may feel required to say "excuse me" when coughing up a lung.

people don't make sense.

Don Quixote

You're right. It's not logical. We're not logical beings.

I guarantee you that the one who says, "I live life by what is logical 100% of the time," will change his tune when someone he loves is in danger. What does this have to do with sneezes? Not much -- except we're fooling ourselves if we say or don't say "bless you" on the basis of its logic.

Yes, a sneeze is so painful, I can understand why you want to be left alone.

wow people are so anal that a simple bless you gets them riled up. For now on I'm going out of my way and saying bless you to everyone.

"Bless you" is too concise and impersonal. I prefer to quote Numbers 24-26.

Also I forgot to mention that at my house we always said "Salud" when anyone sneezed. No God stuff, just health stuff, so it fits everyone.

I like to live a hardcore rock and roll lifestyle, and part of that is neither saying or acknowledging the 'bless you' after I sneeze (which rarely happens to be honest because I have superior genes)

Hmm ... telling someone Balaam's third prophecy to Balak, and then recounting a plague, and then describing a skirmish with the Midianites, and finally a census, is interesting. But kind of long, and what does it have to do with sneezing?

I actually went on a facetious rant a couple years ago about "Bless yous" and sneezes, like Elaine in that clip of Seinfeld.
And I guess I blackballed myself from the "bless yous" with my friends, I've noticed even strangers don't say it anymore, because in class, one time I sneezed, nothing...then some random dude behind me sneezed like 15 minutes later and he got a "Bless you" and I was like WTF? And it's happened more than one occasion. I don't smell or anything, and I'm a nice friendly guy. I don't understand it.

I regret my rant. I miss the "God Bless You's" now...:depressed

Maybe they sense I have no soul.

I'll take it on faith that you have a soul. Pretty sure that you do.

One of the reasons people say "Bless you" is b/c it is believed that your heart stops for a second or less. The complete response is "May God bless you!", but I guess we've shorten it to " Bless you".

I dont know the origins of "bless you" per say, but I always heard your heart stops when you sneeze, thus the religious comment being made in light of that fact.
