Software costs a lot of money nowadays and pirating it can be a hassle. Here's legit free software. Don't link to pirated software, you are in no danger, but Kori would be.

OPERATING SYSTEMS
Mandriva (http://www.mandriva.com/)

I really like Mandriva at the moment. Can install KDE or GNOME. The interface is very slick. urpmi works flawlessly for updating.

Fedora Linux (http://fedoraproject.org/)

Good Linux distro for servers, though you can use it as a desktop too. I've had some issues with yum and updating. KDE or GNOME.

Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/)

Very popular Linux distro for use as a desktop. Easy to install packages, they ship the DVDs free. Ships with GNOME but you can install KDE (making it Kubuntu). Most noob-to-linux guides are written specifically for Ubuntu.

Knoppix (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html)

Awesome for booting from a live cd. If you gotta go somewhere and are gonna be forced to use a machine with windows on it, just pop in the cd and work away in an excellent linux environment.

BROWSERS
Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/)

Secure, fast. Supports thousands of user created addons, some of which I suggest below. Brings in your bookmarks from Internet Explorer. Tabbed browsing.

Google Chrome (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/)

New. Each tab is a seperate process to lower dependancy on the stability of the entire browser. Some scripts are sandboxed. Very simplistic.

Opera (http://www.opera.com/)

Opera consistently performs high in performance tests and leads all browsers with compatibility with web standards. Powerful browser with many features.

FIREFOX ADDONS
Adblock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865)

You will never see a pop-up or flash ad ever again. Guaranteed.

Download Statusbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26)

Easy to track downloads

Flagfox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5791)

Displays which country the server hosting the webpage you are looking at resides in. Did you know SpursTalk is hosted in Slovenia?

Googlepedia (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2517)

Displays a relevant wikipedia article alongside your google query.

IE Tab (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419)

Lets you render a page using Internet Explorer

PDF Download (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419)

Big PDF files can freeze up browsers. Not anymore since it asks you what you want to do with it.

Torrent Finder Toolbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2755)

Search over 120 torrent servers in a second. Find anything you will ever want.

PROGRAMMING
Java Runtime (java.sun.com) (http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp)

Java programs require the JRE to be installed.

Bloodshed IDEs (http://www.bloodshed.net/download.html)

Excellent IDEs that use open source compilers like gcc.

SECURITY
avg free (http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage)

Pay nothing and get protection. Mostly silent and uses few resources.

avast! Antivirus Free Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)

Don't pay a dime and you get feature-packed protection. Don't recommend on older systems as windows binary scanning can cripple start speeds on those machines.

Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)

Find over 150,000 malware, adware, spyware programs with a scan. You can also immunize Internet Explorer and Firefox against malicious websites. Don't install TeaTimer unless you want to, it's annoying.

REMOTE ACCESS
putty (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/%7Esgtatham/putty/download.html)

SSH anywhere securely

SSH Secure Shell Client (http://www.dartmouth.edu/comp/resources/downloads/win/connect/secureshell.html)

Clean your registry, unused files, temp files, memory dumps, core dumps, anything and everything that takes up space but isn't needed.

Driver Cleaner Pro (http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138459-driver-cleaner-pro.html)

Strongly suggested when installing new video card drivers. Uninstall the old ones, run driver cleaner pro, reset PC, install new drivers. Prevents version conflicts common with driver upgrades.

ProcessScanner (http://www.processlibrary.com/processscan/)

See what is running in your background and if it is trash.

ARCHIVING

Free, fast uncompressing and compressing technology. Doesn't annoy you like WinRar and WinZip with registration.

Excellent for DVD playback. Will crack copy protection on any DVD that exists, letting you be able to watch movies on your PC.

Music player. I'm sure you've heard of it. Very skinnable.

Thousands upon thousands of the world's greatest ballers were massacred in a swath of violence and sports bigotry as the game was outlawed worldwide. vim is great. It's been my #1 text editor for years regardless of what operating system I use. It's my tool of choice for writing papers, web pages, shell scripting, or writing small C programs.

- ffmpeg is the best tool for converting audio, video
- vlc is the most versatile media player I've ever found, though mplayer's not bad
- KLite codec pack will ensure you can play any type of video at will on a Windows box
- Eclipse is far and away the best java development environment
- Visual Studio Express is free for Windows coders now, and their C++ development environment/debugger is top notch
- for Linux, Gentoo has become very solid. I used to use LFS, but as Linux has grown, it has become pretty unmanageable the last couple of years (especially now with 64-bit and 32-bit libraries in parallel). Fedora sucks IMO... it tries to force the user into using only open src software, and has no mp3 or dvd support out of the box.
- teTeX (*NIX) and MikTeX (Windows) are great for creating mathematical documents.
- If you have a TV capture card on Windows, DScaler is an awesome viewer. Still haven't had a lot of success with MythTV in *NIX though.
- fceu is the best Nintendo emulator; MAME is great for arcade games (ie, Ninja Turtles, Street Fighter 2, Ms Pacman)
- iDump is a great Windows tool to get music from your iPod onto your hard drive

foobar2000 is a good music player but it can be a real pain to setup. It's ugly as dirt out of the box. If you are patient you can create your dream media player.

Speaking of emulation, epsxe is awesome for playing psx games on your machine, especially since any cd-rom will pick up the games and there is no crazy copy protection on the cds.

I use zsnes for some snes games, though I've gone back to using my actual snes. My old games are starting to die now that it's been 15+ years. If you got an old system, emulate your favorite games, those cartridges are starting to hit their life expectancy.

Anyone have suggestions on free mp3 taggers? Almost everything is commercial or try-before-you-buy. I need to tag hundreds of mp3s, still haven't found a good program.

My OS of choice, unless I'm gaming. Basically Ubuntu, but with some nice tweaks, a better GUI, and many codecs already taken care of.

EDIT: Also loving the original post. Only addendum I would add is that spybot has really gone to shit lately. I used to count on it and adaware, but now it is slow and less effective. I found me a new one that is tops, Asquared:

I recommend using www.logmein.com as a remote control software, you can install it on computers that are linked to an email address based login, and using an internet browser - connect to the computer, and control it like a virtual desktop. Works through firewalls, and i've never had any issues with it at all.

You can lock the mouse/keyboard on the users end, chat to the user, change the how the screen appears to speed up the performance, and lots of other things. With the Pro version (which you have to pay for) you can transfer files, and hear sound, and do all sorts of things.

Quality.

Recommendations that have been mentioned already:
- avast! 4 Home Edition
- 7-Zip
- Blender
- Vim/gVim
- Adobe Reader
- OpenOffice
- The GIMP
- Opera
- foobar2000 (it's true, the default appearance isn't great, but you can modify it to meet your needs. I only recently started using foobar2000, but here is my current setup which I really like)
http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/6375/foobar2000layouten2.th.jpg (http://img364.imageshack.us/my.php?image=foobar2000layouten2.jpg)

In addition, I recommend the following applications (I'm using Windows XP):
- µTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/) - bittorrent client
- Bulk Rename Utility (http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/) - program for--you guessed it--bulk renaming your files and folders
- CDBurnerXP (http://cdburnerxp.se/) - CD/DVD burning application (I just started using it, so I'm not very familiar with it, but it seems like a solid, free alternative)
- Celtx (http://www.celtx.com/) - media pre-production software (screenplays, stageplays, planning, etc.)
- Console (http://sourceforge.net/projects/console/) - a good alternative to Windows' Command Prompt
- EasyTAG (http://easytag.sourceforge.net/) - the best tagger I have used, but you will also need the GTK+ Runtime Environment (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=71914) (stick to EasyTAG version 2.1 (stable)--I had problems with 2.1.5)
- Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) - a very good CD ripper that requires a little more time to setup, but it's very reliable
- FileZilla (http://filezilla-project.org/) - ftp client
- GOM Player (http://www.gomlab.com/eng/) - my favorite media player (mostly for video) because of some of its features, and especially its responsiveness to input (I like VLC, but it lags when using keyboard shortcuts and clicking on the progress bar area). Unfortunately, GOM Player doesn't include as many built-in codecs as VLC, so it's not the all-in-one solution, but it's worth a look
- MediaCoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/) - a program for transcoding your media files (it supports an assload of formats)
- TrueCrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/) - encryption (especially useful for removeable media)
- xplorer² lite (http://www.zabkat.com/x2lite.htm) - I can't recommend this one enough. It's a very nice dual-pane file manager which has a great feel while keeping it simple. As a bonus, it also includes editor², a Notepad replacement--again, simple but solid

PC Wizard is a cool tool if you just installed windows on a PC that your not sure what brand Modem you have or motherboard, video card,etc...

Or if someone brings a notebook or desktop to you and you want to know what brand is the HD without having to crack it open.

It will also benchmark your PC to see where it is weak. And give you a chart on how it matches up with other brands.

You will know the CPU temperature, fan speed, and much more. Your tower may have a sticker that says Compaq and it has ATI but someone may have replaced it with another brand, and so on.......download it and get back to me on how you like it!

Another solid tagger is Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/), which I'm currently trying out because EasyTAG has been coming up short lately--I guess the stable version is a bit outdated already. I still prefer certain details of EasyTAG's interface, but Mp3tag has its advantages as well.

Oh, and another good little application I'm using is MediaInfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en), which gives you detailed information about your media files. It could use some polishing, but it does what it's supposed to.

Anyone have suggestions on free mp3 taggers? Almost everything is commercial or try-before-you-buy. I need to tag hundreds of mp3s, still haven't found a good program.

iTunes lets you alter ID3 tags for mp3s. Just import your music into iTunes, and it will copy everything into the iTunes Music Folder and organize it into folders named by Artist, then Album.

In iTunes, choose the song you want to edit and press Command+I (Ctrl+I on PC) to open the song info and edit the information. You can select multiple songs by Command-clicking, or select groups of songs by Shift-Clicking for editing groups of music.

I've tried a lot of different programs, and I've found that once you give in and let iTunes do the hard work for you, it seems to work the best for me.

Miro (http://www.getmiro.com/) - I haven't used it all that much yet, but I like what I've seen so far. It basically allows you to subscribe to video channels (some are more like video podcasts), but instead of streaming them, you download them to your computer (so it also functions as a media library for content you have downloaded). You can then continue to use it as a media player, or open the files directly with your preferred media player (through your file browser). You can also search for, and download, videos from sites such as YouTube and Dailymotion. And it has HD content as well. Just take a look at the site.

Lingoes Translator (http://www.lingoes.net/) - I just finished installing and trying out this program, and I really like it. It's small and has a number of useful dictionaries available for downloading. Having these dictionaries on your system (as opposed to using online sources) means your results show up instantly, so it's better than searching online or through your browser shortcuts. It has nice features, but the best one is the Cursor Translator--just place your cursor over a word and use the mouse activation mode (mine is CTRL+MiddleMouseButton) to receive the definition/translation in a pop-up window. It's not intrusive at all, and it's very fast.

I've been using foobar and I think there is something wrong with the shuffle option. There must be some type of pattern because my brain knows which song is coming next about half the time. I've tried others since then to make sure I wasn't imagining things and the other shuffles were actually shuffled.

Don't know if I got a bad copy of foobar or if the shuffle option is fubar . . .

ffdshow tryouts (http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/) -- A very good alternative to installing many seperate audio/video codecs, and it allows you to enable and disable each individual codec as you please (permitting you to use your media player's built-in codecs if you prefer). GOM Player plus ffdshow is a great combination, so if you are looking for something new, you should give it a try.

Aegisub (http://www.aegisub.net/) - A nice subtitle editor. It's appearance may seem too colorful for some, but that can be changed if you want. It's very good.

DVD43 (http://www.dvd43.com/) - A DVD decrypter that runs in the background (works well in tandem with HandBrake for ripping DVDs).

ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com/) - I switched from CDBurnerXP to ImgBurn recently, and it's definitely a better fit: a simpler interface with more options.

Psi (http://psi-im.org/) - I also decided to ditch MSN/AOL and just use Jabber for instant messaging. Psi seems like a very good Jabber client, but I need to use it more. Still, I can recommend it.

Sygate Personal Firewall (http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/) - The fuckers at Symantec bought Sygate a number of years ago, and discontinued the free version of this firewall (Personal), but it is still available online. After using Comodo for many months, I'm happy to be using this again. It's interface isn't pretty, but it's a perfect fit for me.

I feel bad for recommending that now. LOL. That compiler doesn't even do basic things like create a jump table for switch statements, instead producing an executable with a long line of cascading branches when you use that construct. Use g++ if you want a free C++ compiler.

first installed avast which didn't do crap but waste a ton of time acting like it was working, so onto a² which is awesome and actually cleaned the crap out of her pc, ran sdfix(always works), and then installed the latest(not cracked) kaspersky av. computer is running great now.

so in conclusion... fuck avast!

somehow a² cleaned it up enough to recognize task manager again and let me shut the pc down and get into safe mode which i was also not able to do. then after all that i ran sdfix which got rid of whatever else was plaguing that pc and then i put kaspersky on there to monitor the pc for future threats. all is working fine now and has been for the past 2-3 wks.

my mother's a real estate broker/paralegal so she has to use the internet and whatnot. she was freakin' out that she couldn't get her work done because her pc was fucked. i asked her to stop looking at porn sites and just do her work. hahaha.

The reason I mentioned Superantimalware is because of the new antivirus 2009 bullshit malware. For some reason Malwarebytes kept crashing when I tried to run it with that malware on the system.

Other than that, Malwarebytes is always my first option for malware.

Superantimalware in safemode followed by Malwarebytes took care of it. I had to still use hijackthis for some of it and go into the msconfig to disable some things but it cleared it up.

Oh funny :lol because my case was exactly the opposite. Superantispyware (I presume you are talking about that) crashed on me and malwarebytes saved my system. I usually just keep one around and sometimes install tthe other during monthly checks. Just goes to show that no one program can be the best.

Also if the topic starter is going to edit his first post then also include physik's idea of performing system management in safe mode. It is the best environment because it loads only the necessary files to run the system freeing the other files which normally wouldn't be scanned. I am sure someone can write instructions to get access into safe mode.

put the form in a typewriter, you would just answer or fill in the blanks
as they appear.

Razer Surround is free until the end of the year. Turns your stereo headphones into virtual 7.1 surround. The simulation sounds pretty damn good tbh.

I got tired of VLC, so I finally found some Windows builds of mpv.
Home page. (http://mpv.io/)
Windows builds. (http://mpv.srsfckn.biz/)

I had tried the original MPlayer on Windows a few times, but it never felt right. This one does a nice job, although I had to modify the Registry to add a "Play with mpv" option to the right-click context menu. Otherwise, you have to launch it from the command prompt.

Have a suggestion for playing blurays?

Maybe it's me, but I notice the several milliseconds of lag between movement and sound of digital movies, and it irritates the hell out of me. I need a program that will access a bluray disk from a player without any lag between them.

ElNono...

You seem to know more than most here in the computer realm. Any suggestions?

That's pretty weird. Do yo use bluetooth speakers or a surround system? That can add a 20+ msec delay. As Chump said, some players will let you shift the audio a bit to compensate.

Frankly, don't have a bluray in my PC, so I might not be able to assist you more, but a cursory search doesn't seem to come up with anything solid.

If you have a PS3 or PS4, that might be another option.

No Bluetooth. Built in speakers and plugin headphones. Been playing DVDs with no issues since I bought the laptop.

My searches came up with the term "lip sync." When I installed a bluray rewriter on my tower, it had no issues. Just a couple days ago, I bought an external USB3 bluray rewriter for my laptop. It does DVD's just fine, but the audio notably lags on some blurays. Reading different sites have claims that the sync gets lost due to differing clock speeds of the CPU and graphics processors, and some players are better than others. I have Power DVD v10 on both computers. I does just fine on my win7 tower for both DVD and Bluray, but only plays DVD on my winX laptop. It appears the drivers that came with my first rewriter in the tower were all I needed. The external player is plug~n~play for the tower with V10 tower DVD even. Just not the WinX.

I then upgraded to Power DVD v15, and everything plays fine except for the lag. No matter what I tried, reboots, remover, reload, etc... the notable lag persists, until....

Just today, downloaded the DVD Fab player. It works just fine, no lag. Now, so does Power DVD 15.

Go figure.

Maybe DVD Fab had the right time base correction?

This MSI Leopard Pro 486 plays Blurays very, very crisp on it's 1080P screen. Cost me $1,050 new.

The DVD Fab I found on a search for free players. It appears it gave me the pro version with a 30 day. I assume it will downgrade after 30 days.

I heard good stuff about PowerDVD... seems to be rated highly. Perhaps the other player installed or reconfigured the Blue Ray driver and it works now?

Frankly, these are the little things I hate about Windows. Install or uninstall a program and shit breaks/fixes somewhere else.

Good to hear you got it running.

It's running real sweet now, and I hate accidentally fixing something, Drives me nuts not to have the complete solution.

Disable Windows 10 Spying easily with this program. Literally one click then a restart. It's free with no spyware attached.

Notorious? :lol where did u hear that? If anything is bundled into the software it's by the programmers design and they will tell you in the description. They run ads and live on donations, also they test all of the software and delete anything that has some kind of hidden service or bloatware. Majorgeeks is the best imo

There is a lot of extra shit like Cortana that runs in the backround that it either disables or completely gets rid of. Also adds "notorious" ip's to your firewall's block list to eliminate the snooping. It creates a restore point in case you don't like what it does so there is zero risk using this program.

Nah, Majorgeeks puts crapware into their shit just like CNET, SourceForge, and all the other download aggregator sites. I don't ever download anything with an installer from any of them.

All MajorGeeks does is host files, they don't put or tamper with the source codes at all. Yes, they have crapware on the site but it's clearly listed and there's usually warning as well. The article you posted cites this.

"We had more geeks write in defending MajorGeeks as a trusted source than any other site, so we were really hoping that they would be the one site that doesn’t allow any bundled crapware. Sadly, that’s not the case. The first thing we downloaded — some stupid screensaver — included four pieces of really terrible crapware, including two that had adware like ShopperPro and BoBrowser that just take over your system.

It’s worth noting that if you know where to look, MajorGeeks does actually tell you which items contain bundled crapware, as they put the license as Bundleware for those terrible items. They also have a notice in red text in the description of the item that it contains adware, although just like Softpedia, it’s too far down on the page.

Now if they would just make that warning in 40 point red font we’d be happier.

We actually talked to the owner of MajorGeeks about this, and he said that if he only listed freeware downloads that don’t contain bundled crapware, he’d have almost no downloads to list and would just have to close up shop. So he makes sure to mark things as containing bundled crapware, and there’s a notice at the bottom. We wish the notice was bigger, and more prominent, but we’ll have to give him credit for at least trying to do the right thing. And for testing every single thing that they put on the site before they put it up there."

This article is nitpicking, MajorGeeks is nothing like CNET etc.. there is no downloader or catch, just free programs.

Well, the code is open, you can build it from source. That is one thing that makes it at least somewhat "serious".

But I wouldnn' trust any webite like majorgeeks &all. Not a proof for me.
