With one condition. It can't be in the FF series. It can be from Sqenix (Square Enix), SEA (Square Electronic Arts), or plain-old Squaresoft, but no FFs. Me, I say Xenogears, an SEA production for the PSX. Several references to psychology (There's a character named "Id", for example), delicious religious over and undertones, and most importantly, mechs, known in this game as Gears. Other candidates were Star Ocean 2 (Second Story), Valkyrie Profile, and Earthbound.

Too late, i already voted for "other" being a FF game.

and why no FF?

There's already a thread for it...

Arcanum/Fallout/Torment

I think western RPGs blow JRPGs out of the water.

Because the battle system is real time compared to turn based?

I'm not a fan of RPGs but I have liked Mass Effect, and KOTOR.

I like turn-based games (Final Fantasy Tactics - best game ever? maybe), but I find I replay domestic stuff a lot more. My biggest gripes with rpgs from Japan are linearity and lack of character customization. Nowadays they are starting to blend into one genre. I still like console rpgs, just not as much.

Dont know if they count, but Ive always liked the Zelda games a lot.
Mass Effect is the shit as well, but I tend to play games that I dont have to invest that much time into.

Linearity is actually why I prefer JRPGs to WRPGs. Not extreme amounts, mind you...like Disc 2 of Xenogears, which is probably my only gripe with it, but, still.

Does Fire Emblem count?

Has to be Chrono Trigger. By far my favorite non-ff rpg. It should be mandatory for every RPG fan to play that game.

^ Yep... Chrono Trigger... we should be debating second place though.

Anybody played Legend of Legaia? Typical JRPG, but the battle system is pretty cool. Here's a movie if no one has seen it before:

KOTOR Series, Fallout Series, Baldurs Gate, all those - and you don't even list them.

Also, don't forget the Ultima series.

Earthbound was the shit.

Dragon Quest for NES was some pretty classic stuff tho.

1. Morrowind/ Elder Scrolls
2. Arcanum (old)
3. Fallout/Fallout 2 (damn near ancient)

Action RPG, but essential: System Shock 2, Deus Ex

Oblivion would have been my #1 if it wasn't for all of the unbeatable missions and crashes.
