Kobe doesn't deserve to celebrate a title with the same teammates and organization he threw beneath the Buss (Jerry) prior to the start of '08. Celts won in Detroit, they can win AT LEAST 1 in L.A. and finish the Lakers off in Boston if it comes down to it.

The casual fans and the media win either way so this really is a lose lose series. However, Boston winning is better. They already have the most titles. Plus we are still in the discussion for franchise of the decade if the Lakers don't win another one. We're up 4-3 right now...if laker ties their 3 peat is a tiebreaker imo.

Plus, after this year Kobe'll be in his 30's.

Just admit you want to hear this phrase repeated for the rest of eternity: "KG was an amazing player who was just as good and just as clutch as Duncan. The only thing that seperated KG and Duncan was KG's supporting cast. The one year KG had a decent supporting cast, he single-handedly carried that team to a championship. That alone proved he's Duncan's equal and better than bigmen who couldn't do that such as David Robinson and Patrick Ewing."
If the Celtics win, that will be KG's legacy :pctoss
Then again, I hate Kobe more than any player so I can't root for the Lakers either. If a team has to win it, all I can do is wait to celebrate that one of these two teams lost. Guaranteed KG or Kobe tears is the only reason this Finals is watchable.

I've always thought the Spurs were alot like those old Celtics teams, so you'd think it would be easier to root for the franchise but.....
You're telling me that I'm going to have to watch that 7' chihuahua I've dubbed "The Big Fugazi" win a title? I think I just threw-up in my mouth. All I'm saying is, Pierce better win the damn M.V.P!
Watching Kobe, Gasol, Phil, Garnett, Allen, win a title is an absolute lose/lose situation. Put a gun to my head and I guess I'd have to say Celtics, because I think there's a good shot it's one and done.
If the Lakers win, The second half of the decade could look alot like the first half. So here's hoping that Kobe goes in the tank, throws his teammates under the bus, and that those young Lakers end up with some deep emotional "Maverick Scars", that never allow them to fulfill their potential.
On second thought.... Maybe California finally falls into the Pacific while they're playing in L.A.

Reasons I don't want the Celtics to win:
1. They are being shoved down our throat as the new "America's team."

3. KG slapped Tim in the head and told him Happy Mother's Day.
4. Ray Allen bitches like a wuss about Bowen and Kobe gives Bowen respect.
5. KG didn't get suspended for intentionally pushing a ref. Tim Duncan got suspended for accidentally pushing Jack Nies. Tim Duncan got thrown out of a game for smiling.
6. Paul Pierce tried to chalk up gang signs to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness (or something else lame like Blood, Sweat and Tears).
7. KG commercials.
8. "The Big 3" in Boston is Bird, Parrish and McHale.
9. Ray Allen is a wuss. Oh yeah ... I mentioned that already. But Ray Allen is a frickin' wuss. I don't care how many good things I find out about him or how much charity work he does.

False...all it proves is that the Lakers have earned my hate and I don't hate out of some unfair bias. They have earned my hate, and they have earned the hate of Spurfans in the past decade. The relationship between the two teams before Shaq/Kobe/Phil was entirely different...

I can't handle Lakerfans celebrating a championship...
Plus, if the Celts win, nothing changes because they already have more championships than anyone else.
If the Lakers win they can tie the Celts. Lakerfan will be even more insufferable.
If the Lakers lose, they have a losing record in the finals :lmao
You make a good sales pitch here. These are very good reasons.

I'm with Shoog, timvp and Kori on this one. KG will again be compared to TD and the way the Celts have been pushed down our throats all season long makes me hate them with passion (Gatorade commercial anyone?)

There's not a chance anyone is going to seriously consider KG as better than Duncan. Duncan won that race long ago.
But if Kobe wins I can guarantee you people are going to say he is better than Duncan. Hell, they say it already.
Furthermore...Kori, timvp and ShoogarBear do not all have the same stance...
timvp is a staunch advocate of fence riding...he sincerely believes it does not make a difference. Inspite of all the past shit between the Spurs and the Shaq/Kobe/Phil Lakers...it's like it never happend for timvp. And he seems to believe that somehow the Celtics have done anything close to what the Lakers have done..
Kori is jocking the Lakers entirely out of loyalty to Bruce Bowen..
ShoogarBear hates the Celtics from his days as a KnickFan.
Me? I'm the only one that can be trusted here...as an admitted casual follower of the Lakers at times...obviously something must have changed to put me totally in the corner of the anti-Laker movement.
And I am very forthcoming with the reasons why when asked...
Bottomline is that it will be far more damaging and painful for the Spurs if the Lakers win...and any real Spurfan will be rooting for the Celts against LA. IT's just that simple.

But if Kobe wins I can guarantee you people are going to say he is better than Duncan. Hell, they say it already. You just owned yourself, Laker Fan.
People either hate or love Kobe. Those who hate him will hate him even if he wins the next ten championships. People who love Kobe already think he's better than Duncan. Kobe is a lost cause either way. He can't convince the people who hate him to like him and the people who like him will like him no matter what (or who [with or without consent]) he does.
KG retiring a ringless biotch is important. That said, you're right. I don't care either way. I'm pissed that there is no good outcome but I'm at least thankful that either Kobe or KG will be crying within the next couple weeks.

And for the record, I hate these Lakers more than the 2000-2003 Lakers. At least those Lakers were physical and Shaq is more respectable than Kobe. This Kobe led group of soft azz Lakers is impossible to respect. These Lakers might be the team I hate more than any team in history.
The only player on the team that isn't soft is their six-foot-nothing point guard who has fvcked the Spurs out of two possible titles with thanks to the refs unable to make the correct call with less than a second to go.

Whottt is calling out too many people for being on the fence. Here ... I'm not on the fence at all.
Reasons I don't want the Celtics to win:
1. They are being shoved down our throat as the new "America's team."
2. People will once again start saying KG is as good as Timmy.
10. St. Patrick's Day isn't that fun.
Lakers in 7 (or something happens that they both can lose).
OK, now that was damn convincing. I'm glad I'm not even watching the Finals! :lol
I guess I'll now be able to see positives and negatives regardless of who wins.

I hate LA and loved Bird. Kobe doesn't deserve to win after the crap he's pulled with this team and Jackson is a smug prick. KG will never be compared with TD. TD doesn't shrink in big situations and KG was already a HOF lock, why not let the guy win a championship. At least he never demanded to be traded publicly and rode out the crappiness that was Minn. I could care less if Paul Pierce wins. Also PJ Brown would win and he's' a good guy and player who's suffered many years on less than great teams. Boston plays Spurs-like defense (not this years Spurs but...) and I like teams that don't ignore that side of the court.

No it won't. KG will be credited for being a great player (which he is) who finally played on a team good enough to win it all. Leading a team to the championship is a lot different than carrying it to one. Anyone who has watched this series realizes the clutch, money player on the Celtics is Paul Pierce.
KG is not only not dominating the series, he is showcasing his major weakness: constantly settling for the outside jumper. A 6'11' guy who does not impose his will in the paint? Sorry, no one with half a brain who has watched the NBA for the last ten years would think that KG can dominate a game or series the way Tim Duncan has throughout his career. You don't ever hear anyone regarding Kevin Garnett as the "greatest power forward to ever play the game". It is said all the time about Tim Duncan.
Look, if a bunch of east coast media hacks want to dub some false legacy on Garnett vs. Duncan because Garnett wins a championship this year, so be it. It don't mean shit. Duncan's resume is complete.
By the way, fuck the Lakers. At least the Celtics are a hard nosed, defensive minded team led by a former Spur. How can any Spurs fan not care if the Lakers win a championship? Go Celtics.

It occurred to me (and it probably occurred to others sooner) that if the Celtics win, the Spurs will remain the only Western Conference team to uphold the honor of the conference in the Finals since 2003, given that the Lakers and Mavericks both flamed out when given the opportunity to demonstrate the West's dominance by winning the Finals. There is something to be said for being unique. And for all of the insufferability of Lakers' fans, it might be slightly more pleasant to remind them that: (1) they've been teh suck in consecutive Finals; and (2) they've only beaten Boston 2 out of 11 (or whatever that number is for Finals matchups).

Question: If Paul Pierce averages 60 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists in two Celtics' closeout wins in Los Angeles while KG goes scoreless and defecates on Bill Russell's seat, will that be enough to maybe draw a vote or two away from KG as Finals MVP?
romad_20
06-09-2008, 09:47 AM
If the C's win, Paul Pierce is the MVP, period. It's not even close right now. He pulled a Willis Reed stunt in game one and hit those back to back 3's and tore them up last night. Duncan will not get forgotten because Garnett wins a 'chip but if the lakers win it does take away from the Spurs legacy. That is the most important thing.

The playoffs have a way of exposing who a team REALLY is!

All season long I hated the media trying to shove down our throats the nostalgia of the Celtic era. Sick of the damn gatorade commercials, the big 3 aren't so big till they can prove they can win.
Oh yeah, I also hate the fact that Boston worked so hard to scout and develope players and didn't just trade and patch the team.
I don't think the Lakers will win a title in the next three years if they let this one get away (which they're already doing). If the Celtics win this year, the '09 Lakers will have '06 Pistons/'07 Mavs written all over them. Pissed because they lost in the Finals the previous year with a dominant regular season followed by a playoff collapse.
I don't care for particularly either of these teams but stupid Laker trolls and Phil Jackson are as good a reason as any to go for Boston. It's obvious that Pierce is going to win MVP, so I don't know why people are afraid that the media will put KG above Tim when Tim will still have three more rings and Finals MVPs than KG will.

I haven't watched a single second of the Finals, including any highlights.
But a few quick thoughts on why I would rather have the Celtics over the Lakers:
1. I won't root for one over the other based on individual players (i.e.- the TD v. KG debate or the Ray Allen doesn't respect Bowen debate). The Spurs to a man have always been team first, and probably don't give a rat's ass about any of this individual player hate that is prominent on the board.
2. So if it just about the team, which is worse for the Spurs legacy? Having to trade Championships every other year with the one and done teams from the Eastern Conference, or being tied with the Lakers for decade dominance? We all know that the Spurs would come out on the losing end of any Laker v. Spur team of the decade debate.
3. Having half my family living in Whittier, I am well aware of the insufferability of LakerFan when they are winning. Tie the Celts for most championships ever? Tie the Spurs for championships in this decade? Sorry, but I don't think that I could handle that much front-running elitist mentality for the next year (if not longer, God forbid they win a few more with this team).
I care who wins, not that I want to watch it happen though. Go Celts. :(

If the Lakers win it diminishes what the spurs have done, bottom line. It's not that hard to figure out. What's the worse thing that would happen if the Celts win? Nothing I can think of is worse than Phil becoming "the greatest coach of all-time" and all the Kobe ball sucking that will go on for years.

Anyone ever seen that south park episode where the whole town is so smug because they all drive hybrid cars to "help the environment?" If the Lakers win the championship then Laker fans level of smug will be unbearable and their cloud of smog will devour us all.

Celtics suck on the road, so hopefully L.A. wins three at home. I don't want the Celtics to win the Title.
Change suck to sucked. While that was one series, they were able to dominate the Pistons in game 3 and close them out in game 6 with both being on their homecourt. Celts can win on the road as they proved the last series. That being said, a series doesnt begin until a road team wins.

TD>KG it isnt even close. I said it the minute KG was traded here and I will say it now, Paul Pierce is the ultimate leader of this team. KG was a huge reason for us getting this far but this is Pierce's team when it's all said and done.

I don't get the willingness to say "well we lost to the champs"
where was that attitude in 06'..
Fuck that. If the Lakers lose and fall to the Celtics D, and Kobe continues shooting more games at under 40 percent, vs the 55 percent of ours. It means that the Spurs loss to a good but not great team, who benefited from fortune:
a gimpy Manu, a blatant series deciding NO call of an obvious foul that HAVE been called before in important games with two seconds left (Finals 06) , and the error of an incompetent AIRLINE!
I don't want to hear the "what if" cards because all those are legitimate reasons , the last two being unnatural and manmade. If Lakers get exposed for being a soft-ass team, then logic suggests that Spurs got beat by Lakers getting the lucky draw of the straw.
Their number 1 seed wasn't even a dominating position, they just came ahead in the horse race at the right time.

And I actually do respect him and colonel more than ganett allen and pierce. The only reason I am rooting for the celtics is the Spurs legacy. If laker wins the Spurs will be known simply as "the team that won between the lakers dynasty". However if the Spurs only had about one ship i'd root for the guys who actually back stuff up over the guys who whine and talk shit and have nothing to show for it.
That being said GO CELTICS!!!
Your funny, although your goin for the Celtics and ur reasoning for goin for them I do agree with, I'd have to disagree with your take on the 2 teams: 1. the only team Ive seen talking shit, whinning and kissin the star players ass is the Lakers. The Celtics mentality is that much like the Spurs "we're here to play, fuck the refs" while Kobe and Phil whine, yell and cry in the refs face, on the sideline, after Kobe loses the ball out of bounds and to the media. Sure the next day they changed their tune, "oh, we gotta be more aggressive", but that was only after he had to say something to the meda. Then in G3, Kobe answer to Tafoya's question about "what was the difference between your teams play in this game and the last couple?" he had the audasicity to say "No different, we played the same." He's such a crock. 2. How can you respect a team that has nothing but utter disgust for your team? Ive never to rarely heard Phil or Kobe say anything good about the Spurs and guess what every year in the playoffs theyre gonna be in our conference playoffs, the Celtics will not.

I'm on the Celtics bandwagon now. I don't want to see the Lakers come back from their 3-1 deficit. That'd be too much "Kobe is the greatest" talk. Finish this ish off, Boston.
P.S.
James Posey was the player I wanted the Spurs to get this past summer and I've long pimped Eddie House as the perfect backup point guard for Pop. They are the only two players in the series I like. Posey has that 1999 Spurs toughness about him and House just wills himself to do good.
It sucks that Ray Allen will have to win MVP but Posey to me might be the man most responsible for their 3-1 advantage. That guy makes more great defensive plays and reads in a quarter than nearly anyone else in the game makes in an entire contest. Tom Thibodeau gets a lot of credit but none of that defensive mastery would be possible without Posey.

To me, it is not really important to pull for one team. I don't like either. I think the Lakers will be a contender for years to come with a healthy Bynum and the MLE to improve some needs.
Boston on the other hand has 2 years the MOST to be in contention (with the big 3).
My thoughts on Boston winning it: I don't see how 1 ring would help people argue that KG is better than Timmy. The ones who argue that KG is better right now will keep to do so regardless of what happens this year. Everybody who followed the NBA over the years and has some basketball knowledge will agree that Tim is better. It is not even close. That said the ONLY reasonable way to compare players is their success (as franchise players). The consistency of success since TD joined the league is remarkable. When Tim played they got out of the first round EVERY YEAR and won 4 championships with the team that drafted him. He won championships with 11 different players (1999/2005) on his team. He has 3 Finals MVPs (along with MJ, Shaq and Magic the only players who won 3 or more). Who knows if KG will win one finals MVP at all.
I don't really root for one team. But with the Lakers being strong for years to come it might be easier to accept if Boston wins.
That said, I really hope the Spurs will retool and win another...

All championship teams have to take their lumps in the playoffs before they win it all. The 3-peat Lakers lost to Utah and then got swept by the Spurs in 99 before finally winning it all in 2000.
This current Laker team surpassed all of my expectations and had a wildly successful season when put into proper perspective. The experience they are gaining now will prove invaluable in the years to come as they try and contend for titles. The addition of Bynum, a defensive minded veteran to help Kobe lock down the perimeter, and another offseason of training for the entire team will push them over the top next season IMHO.

I agree. The Lakers will be a favorite going into next year. But remember Pheonix when they did not have Amare? They also thought that would go all the way when he is back and they did not. Kobe going down in flames. KG getting exposed. Kobe, KG and Ray-Ray not winning the MVP. Sucks but this was about the best way this Finals could have played out.

Silver lining. I hope Spurs were watching for motivation. Especially seeing the Lakes potent offense get taken down and dismantled with great defense.

And often behind PJ Brown, Rondo (except in LA), and Leon Power.

Exactly. Spur fans have no idea what they missed. A Finals against the Celtics and the Celtic trolls would have turned you into an ABC'er For Life.
Hmm, actually it might be interesting to wander over to Lakersground for the first time in years . . .

I mean...
The beauty of it is, we don't have to deal with the douchbaggery of CeltFan right now, LakerFan does :lmao
I swear, you act like LakerFan would have been less of a douchebag if he'd won...and he is here on these boards. He would have been here even more if he'd won.
Now? The Lakers are like 2-10 against the Celts in the NBA finals...
That's not bitch status, that's crachwhore status.
Plus...the Lakers have a losing record in the finals...and that's saying something.

Just for the record, whottt, you've relinquished your Laker Fan status, right? I'm a little uneasy posting in a thread started by an ex-Laker Fan telling us to root against the Lakers.
Feels like a trap.
