Young girl shot, killed during car chase in Juárez; 4 slain

A 13-year-old girl was killed Monday evening when a sport utility vehicle she was riding in was strafed with gunfire during a car chase in the San Lorenzo area, as the violence in Juárez showed no signs of slowing.

The girl, who according to some accounts was 12 years old, was apparently riding with members of her family who managed to survive, Channel 26-KINT (cable Channel 2) reported.

The girl was not identified.

The girl's death was part of a deadly day that included at least four other homicides and the posting of a new death threat list titled "Para los que siguen de vivos" (For those still alive) naming state investigators.

In a pre-dawn incident Monday, a man was found alive but severely beaten after apparently being left for dead wrapped in a blanket and tied with electric cable, investigators said.

In a separate shooting, two unidentified men riding in a Jeep Cherokee were killed when 37 shots were fired from another moving vehicle at 1 p.m. Monday on Avenida Gomez Morin.

In related news, the Mexican army recently arrested three men and seized more than a ton of marijuana after a car chase that lead to a home in the 3100 block of Buena Ventura street in the Anahuac neighborhood.

There's a difference between the street level pushers that most people buy from and the people who take the risk of bringing large quantities of drugs into the country. There's a little more reason to kill someone over having kilos of drugs worth hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of dollars versus some guy driving around in a nice car with a couple grams of blow and a few ounces of pot. Honestly, by the time those bloodstained kilos of coke reach my hand, they've traded hands so many times and aren't even close to the purity they were when they entered the United States. At that point, the two shouldn't even be compared anymore.

Doesn't alot of the pot in Oregon come from British Columbia? I read a Playboy story a few years ago about how the smugglers use quick helicopter runs at different spots on the border, and about how alot of them look like, and are, regular guys, except for the fact that they make a ton of money smuggling huge amounts of an illegal drug into the US.

Not me, my stuff is homegrown. What a bunch of
idiots. You want a high, drink! Or cant you handle
it.

I guess only oil kills, you know the big carbon foot
print. And living by oil refineries.

What a group. And you call me senile.:hat:hat:bang

Oh, you want the choice to smoke it. But you
don't want to give me a choice if I should have
insurance, wear seat belts, smoke in public, using
legal tobacco or give our kids school vouchers
to attend the school of choice. Great bunch.
Oh, and don't forget, get rid of my SUV and drive
a tin can with wheels on it. To save the earth.

That could be true, but they actually don't have as good of a growing climate as we do. As far as I know, very little is imported into Oregon. It is one of our exports as well!

yeah, I never understood how the lefty crowd could smoke a bunch of pot and talk about all the things that the government should be making people do (although they never phrased it like that, of course.)

When I used to smoke it down at A&M I used to think, "Man, why doesn't everbody just quit hasslin' everbody else..."

That sounds like a classical liberal; the people I'm talking about were all about things like the carbon credit cards, crazy high income tax rates (their definition of wealthy was a bit off), and all kinds of other crazy stuff depending upon how big of a pothead they were.

Smoking pot, whatever, I used my fair share of it in my B.C. days. The fact that I used it attests to my enjoying it, but unlike some, I never felt using it was a reason to brag, nor did I feel of sense of pride in the fact that I used it.
In light an overwhelming consensus among the scientific community about the health risks associated with it use, it's logic defying to read a post in this thread, from a poster who claims to be in the 99+ percentile of intelligence, preening over his use of it.

Marijuana potency increased last year to the highest level in more than 30 years, posing greater health risks to people who may view the drug as harmless, according to a report released Thursday by the White House.

The latest analysis from the University of Mississippi’s Potency Monitoring Project tracked the average amount of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, in samples seized by law enforcement agencies from 1975 through 2007. It found that the average amount of THC reached 9.6 percent in 2007, compared with 8.75 percent the previous year.

The 9.6 percent level represents more than a doubling of marijuana potency since 1983, when it averaged just under 4 percent.

“Today’s report makes it more important than ever that we get past outdated, anachronistic views of marijuana,” said John Walters, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. He cited baby boomer parents who might have misguided notions that the drug contains the weaker potency levels of the 1970s.

“Marijuana potency has grown steeply over the past decade, with serious implications in particular for young people,” Walters said. He cited the risk of psychological, cognitive and respiratory problems, and the potential for users to become dependent on drugs such as cocaine and heroin.

While the drug’s potency may be rising, marijuana users generally adjust to the level of potency and smoke it accordingly, said Dr. Mitch Earleywine, who teaches psychology at the State University of New York in Albany and serves as an adviser for marijuana advocacy groups. “Stronger cannabis leads to less inhaled smoke,” he said.

The White House office attributed the increases in marijuana potency to sophisticated growing techniques that drug traffickers are using at sites in the United States and Canada.

A report from the office last month found that a teenager who has been depressed in the past year was more than twice as likely to have used marijuana than teenagers who have not reported being depressed — 25 percent compared with 12 percent. The study said marijuana use increased the risk of developing mental disorders by 40 percent.

“The increases in marijuana potency are of concern since they increase the likelihood of acute toxicity, including mental impairment,” said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which funded the University of Mississippi study.

“Particularly worrisome is the possibility that the more potent THC might be more effective at triggering the changes in the brain that can lead to addiction,” Volkow said.

But there’s no data showing that a higher potency in marijuana leads to more addiction, Earleywine said, and marijuana’s withdrawal symptoms are mild at best. “Mild irritability, craving for marijuana and decreased appetite — I mean those are laughable when you talk about withdrawal from a drug. Caffeine is worse.”

The project analyzed data on 62,797 cannabis samples, 1,302 hashish samples, and 468 hash oil samples obtained primarily from seizures by law enforcement agencies in 48 states since 1975.

I would venture to say that more lefty liberals that drink jamba juice and listen to reggae and talk about the man holding them down and how Barack is going to really change things smoke pot, than conservative folk do. I have some conservative friends that smoke pot, but I know a lot more liberals that do.
