(yes, Posey will opt out of his contract June 30). And if Boston wants them back - Posey in particular - Bartelstein will be a key figure in making it happen....Posey signed a two-year deal last offseason paying $3.2 million this season with a player option for $3.4 million next season. The option was basically just an insurance policy for the 31-year-old Posey; Bartelstein said Posey will become a free agent.

Posey will be an unrestricted free agent and the most Boston can offer is a mid-level exception deal, which would be expected to start at about $5.8 million. If the Celtics offer him the full mid-level exception or something close to it over four years, they should have a strong shot at re-signing him. But they shouldn't be surprised if several teams go after him hard, too.

"Everyone in the league will go after him," an NBA executive said. "The Lakers probably will. But it will probably be the same money. He can pick and choose. He's like Robert Horry now. A team close to winning will sign him."

We need to get younger..Posey isn't going to do that for us...if all other options are exhausted, then I would be up for Posey, but he is somoeone we should have gotten about 3 or 4 years ago.

I know we are trying to get younger, but this guy is still great off the bench. I would love to have him coming off the bench for the Spurs, but we won't be able to get him. Would take maybe more than the MLE.

Posey would be a great addition to the Spurs. Plus he fits Pop's veteran requirement.

posey on the spurs would definitely be scary, but some of the posters are right, it doesnt really fit a need. we need to add some offensive power not another defensive specialist. even with that in mind, i would love to get posey here regardless cause the man is a winner. you can never have too many winners.

Posey is a dirty player.

I lobbied for Posey last year. Still a valuable player, but unless he's the only option available, I'd rather they go in another direction.

I didn't realize Posey was so available. I agree with the article in that he's a lot like Horry. He's been amazing in his two trips to the Finals. He was my number one target last year -- too bad that DUI scared the Spurs off.

I'd be all for Posey getting the entire MLE. He's a guy you can stick on everyone from Kobe Bryant to Dirk Nowitzki ... and he's a damn clutch shooter on top of it. Yeah he's slowing down and he's 31 years old but he'd be such a seamless fit into what the Spurs do that they have to look at him.

A lot of people want the Spurs to get younger but Posey would help them win a championship next season more than anyone else who is available. That said, my guess is the Spurs don't bite. They could have got him at a bargain basement level last offseason and past him. The Spurs typically don't like to admit mistakes and go back offering more money.

If the Spurs were able to find some scoring and a backup point via the draft and trade(s), then using some portion of the MLE on Posey would make sense.

I reckon Posey will sign his option and stay with the Celts to defend the title.

I reckon Posey will sign his option and stay with the Celts to defend the title.Naw he's gonna opt out and try to land his final big payday. However, the Celts would be amazingly dumb to let him go.

Especially after seeing the last 2 games of the Finals...hell yes, we'll take him

He's the best player off their bench this series, hands down.

He hustles like a Spur, come don the black & silver, James!

The Globe's Marc J. Spears writes today that, in a move that shouldn't come as a surprise, James Posey will opt out of the second and final year of his contract with the Celtics.

The move will make Posey an unrestricted free agent, but both the Celtics and Posey have expressed an interest in reuniting during the offseason.

From Spears: Celtics forward James Posey's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said his client will opt out of the second and final year of his contract today. The move will make the versatile Posey an unrestricted free agent, but Bartelstein has also said his client wants to return to Boston. When asked about whether Posey, who averaged 7.4 points per game this season, will be re-signed, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said Saturday: "I'd hate to say whether or not we will be able to. We'll see what happens." Free agency begins tomorrow.

ESPN's Chad Ford ranks the best available free agents (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=FreeAgents-080629) and has Posey at No. 7 among this year's crop of unrestricted free agents. Ford writes: "Posey helped himself with a strong performance against the Lakers in the Finals. He's another player who should get a three- to four-year midlevel deal somewhere."

Early offseason rumblings have the Lakers and Hornets among potential suitors for Posey's services. New Orleans freed up some space when it traded its No. 27 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft to Portland in exchange for $3 million cash.

Wherever Posey goes especially with JVG's at TNT with his gushing lovefest with Posey will him a big payday to a contender. I could easily see Posey going to the Spurs, Lakers, Mavs, Rockets, Hornets etc for about the MLE. Teams will also be willing to pay him and go over the cap to give themselves a shot at the title.

he'd be a good fit for us with championship experience on 2 teams, 3 pt range and defensive smarts BUT no way boston's letting him go and no way that he'd leave unless they really low balled him.

we should have got him a while ago. he is a piece that would make Spurs so much better.

I don't see him coming to SA though.

I don't think we should make an offer and then stand around waiting for a player who is unlikely to come here. We'll wind up like a stood-up bride at the altar.

Free agents "unrestricted" stink this year. The two best in my opinion are Gilbert and Jamison. Looks like the will resign with Wizards. Posey is a good player but he is not even a starter.

Considering he'd probably replace Horry, he does make the team younger.

dont forget about how the spurs won 4 titles in the past X years........ with defense. knowing that I dont see how anyone would be against signing posey, getting younger is such a mythical creature, who cares about it younger, its about winning titles, now, as in 2009.

He'd be a great pick-up for the Spurs especially give Bowens age, but I don't see it happening. He's got his rings, and with him being on the wrong side of 30? My guess is he's probably looking for more years and cash than the Spurs are willing to offer.

If he wants to take the MLE for 2yrs., and J.R. is out of the question? I think the Spurs would almost have to bite.

Personally I'd love to see him on the Spurs, but I'm not getting my hopes up. (At least not again. :flipoff G.S.) :lol

With Maggette and Pietrus gone, I'd be all for giving Posey the full MLE. If reports that Boston offered him less than that are true, it could turn out to be a pride issue and a desire to win a third title with a third team, just to show the doubters what his value is. Reports say Turiaf was offered 4 yrs/17 mil by Golden State, which shows how in demand the remaining free agents are going to be. In a perfect world, sure, you'd like to get Posey a little cheaper, but I think the Spurs are playing with fire here, and are close to getting shut out of the FA market. And there would clearly be many teams interested in trading for him if for some reason the chemistry didn't work. And if New Orleans gets him, I think it's big trouble. He would neutralize JR Smith (who I don't think will want to be a good-guy Spur anyway), and the Spurs would fall in the power rankings...

Honestly, this is the guy that makes the most sense for the Spurs right now. Proven winner, defense first, can hit the three...maybe not as young as they would like, but how long is the Tim Duncan window open anyway? He wants a four year deal, so that might be a problem, but the Spurs have a real shot at him. James Posey would fit in perfectly on this team. Bring him in.
