DALLAS - The County of Dallas is losing money. They're currently $17 million in the hole and now looking at how to crawl out. A meeting held this morning has been adjourned.

What's clear is that cost cutting is taking high priority. Mandated by the state of Texas, the county must balance its budget.

Commissioners say they do not want to have job cuts and do not want to raise taxes. So, something must give. "We are going to employ all budgeting strategies. There is nothing that is too small," said John Wiley Price.

Among the proposals getting the most attention is downsizing sheriff and constable vehicles from Crown Victorias to Ford Focus. The Focus is cheaper and more fuel efficient which will produce a saving of $150,000 savings per year.

The county wants to modify its take-home vehicle policy for employees at savings of more than $300,000.

John Wiley Price said only once in his career have job cuts come about due to a budget shortfall. And he does not expect that to happen this year.
