IS it worth buying one of them if I don't have an HDTV ?

Course.. you won't get as good of graphics but that's all. I would go with the 360 over the PS3 beings your paying for a blue ray player with the PS3 and you don't have a HDTV. Really though you can get a good HDTV for 600... Buy that first or go get one of the systems and get a HDTV when you get the chance.

i'd take the ps3 free online and free downloads when games get updates but not many people play it online as much as 360 and its hard to find people to play with sometimes but its free so you can't complain lol plus you get a blue ray player

Yea but he doesn't have a HDTV.. so the fact you get a blue ray player doesn't mean anything.

PS3 online is free.. but honestly at like 8 bucks a month Live is much better IMO. I owned all three systems and got rid of all of them except the 360. But I'm more of a FPS fan and the 360 is stacked with them.

I can't recommend X360 at all. I had another die with the 3 red rings of death, and when I called to have it serviced, the Indian guy on the other end of the line had an attitude. I asked to talk to a manager, and she was 10x worse. She gave me some bullshit about her system being down, and to call back in 6 hours. Of course, 6 hours later was past business hours. Fucking cunt.

Depends on how much you prioritize graphics.

Well, I do like great graphics, but I'm not gonna buy an HDTV anytime soon.

But I guess PS3/360, on a regular TV, would be an impprovement over PS2 on the same regular TV, right?

use the towel trick in the meanwhile until you get a new one, or get it fixed. its a great temp fix that works every time (at least so far every time ive done it, its worked. probably about 5 times now)

I don't have HDTV and I play my 360 daily and love it. If you're buying new pay the extra money for the replacement warranty so you don't have to ship it to get fixed if something happens. I had the power supply shit out on me and with the replacement warranty I was back and running in less than an hour. Well worth it.

HDTV should have been first on your list of technology upgrades way before a PS3.

However, it can be done.

Care to explain? Why does someone need to have a pre-set list of tech to own?

Perhaps he prefers playing games over having a few more lines of resolution on a TV?

HDTV isn't necessary to enjoy the system. I used to connect my XB360 to my 42" plasma HDTV. It looked nice, but I'm not missing it too much after switching to me 32" CRT TV that's in my room. And yes, the graphics are much more improved than PS2/XBOX.

I don't have to explain....it's what I believe. What I should have said was if you're gonna start a home entertainment system (some would argue a PS3 is), you should start with the TV.

However, playing the PS3 on SDTV is acceptable.

You're telling someone what to do with their money, but you don't have to explain why they should spend said money in the first place?

He came here looking for opinions on 360/ps3, and you said that he should own an HDTV first... but you won't tell him your rationale for thinking so. Makes perfect sense.

Look here's a reason I would go with the TV first before the PS3....

You already have the TV then you get the added bonus of having the Blu-ray when you splurge for the PS3.

Happy?

Have to agree with to21. I went out first and bought an HDTV (for the simple reason I wanted to maxumize the ability of the system I was getting) before I went and got a 360/ps3.

I like video games.

They're fun regardless of the resolution. We aren't talking about a black and white set here. Dude likely has an ample TV to enjoy some good old fashion gaming nights.

I have a 32" Sony EDTV (between HD and SD). It looks utterly fantastic. I don't feel the need to go blow a wad of cash just so I can play games at the highest possible resolution. Apparently neither does the OP. If you're going to suggest he listens to you, you might want to provide him with more of a rationale than "it makes sense to me".

Because last I checked, the gameplay is what makes games great. I'd rather have 10 great games in SD than 1 or 2 games in HD. If a person is on a constricted budget, they don't always have the option to buy the biggest and best.

Its also a bit tough to compare a 1k or more expense to something that basically runs 300 bucks.

Yes, because as we all know, it's not just an HDTV you're buying.

You also have to buy a stand or a mounting bracket for it.

You have to purchase supplemental HDMI cables.

Then you have to usually purchase a warranty protection plan.

It's not a simple matter of just buying a TV and jacking a PS3 to them.

ynh
06-23-2008, 03:54 PM
PS3 comes with HDMI cables.. I went to sams club and got my HDTV for 600-700 and that was it. Alll the rest of the stuff you mentioned is all optional.

You don't have a choice. If you don't have HD you can't buy an X-box or PS. That's just the way it is. Too bad.

Oh hey Paul.. found out you need to get the 80 gig PS ps2 if you want to play old PS3 games.. but it will only play 80% of those games.. you need to see if you can find one of the old 60 gigs though cause they play all of them.

ynh
06-23-2008, 04:05 PM
Here are the different types.

40gb: cannot play PS2 games, reduced usb ports, no SD card reader, comes in various colors

60gb: plays all PS games, 4 usb ports, SD card reader, best backwards' compatibility software

80gb: largest hard drive, plays about 80% of PS2 games, SD card readers, 4 usb ports

If you are looking for a video game console:

XBOX 360>>>>>>>>>>>>>>PS3

If you are looking for a blue ray disc player:

PS3>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>XBOX 360

It is really that simple. :toast

I just bought a PS3 yesterday…I love it.

360 is great too but my choice was based on Blu Ray (if you have netflix it’s a great deal) and my buddy who has had to send back his XBOX time and time again.

Their both great systems.

Its lighter, wireless and is a motion sensor thingy for some games. No rumble pak like the dual shock. The difference it weight was really weird at first but I prefer it.

they recently made new dualshocks though. they are a tad heavier, but still lighter than the PS2 controllers. they are quite nice.

now the new dual shock won't have the motion sensor aspect right?

On and to the thread starter…they will look great on a regular TV from what I have seen. Typically non hd looks awful on a hd tv…so its in reverse.

I'm gonna buy a PS3 as well.

I was about to buy an Xbox 360 (the one I played with yesterday) from a friend; he bought it in December 2007, but he only has the Microsoft guarantee; he didn't buy the store guarantee (which is much better, because if they have to replace it following a big technical issue, it will be with a brand new, and the manufacturer won't replace it with a brand new). It's too late for me to buy the store guarantee (you have 30 days to do it after buying the system).
Plus, considering the high return rate for ther 360.......

Too bad, because, because my friend got me a nice deal: 400$ (canadian) with 9 games (and good ones: Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, Pro Evolution Soccer 2007, etc....), and an external cooler.

So, I'm gonna get a brand new PS3 with the store guarantee (70$ for 2 years, not bad)

Plus, I much much prefer the PS3 controller over the 360's
