Barrett misses Nass in would-be confrontation

Madison -- Former University of Wisconsin-Madison lecturer and Sept. 11 conspiracy theorist Kevin Barrett today tried to confront a lawmaker who he said ended his academic career.

And just to make the encounter that much more strange, Barrett was joined by a John Lennon impersonator.

Barrett -- who is now running for Congress as a Libertarian against U.S. Rep Ron Kind (D-La Crosse) -- said he wanted to invite state Rep. Stephen Nass (R-Whitewater) to a campaign event he is having tonight to discuss issues they have battled over in the past.

Nass pushed hard against Barrett in 2006 when Barrett was discussing his view that the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States were an inside job.

Nass wasn't in his Capitol office when Barrett, the Lennon impersonator and a woman video taping the scene stopped by. Barrett told legislative aide Mike Mikalsen the lawmaker cost him his teaching job.

"You frankly took care of that yourself," Mikalsen said. "Don't give the legisator credit where it isn't due."

Retorted Barrett: "Well, I couldn't do it without him."

Barrett tried to give Mikalsen and another aide a flyer for a Barrett campaign event that will feature a screening of "The U.S. vs. John Lennon" and an endorsement from a "mystery rock star." Mikalsen told him it was against the law to make campaign solicitations in the Capitol.

The Lennon impersonator mugged for the camera. "This never happened," he said. "You never saw it."

Barrett, of Lone Rock, said his run against Kind is going well. A few dozen people have recognized him as he's sought nomination signatures, and all but one agreed to sign his papers, he said.

"Ron Kind keeps voting for the war and all his support evaporates when you mention that," Barrett said.

Barrett will square off against Kind in the November election only if he can beat Ben Olson III of Wisconsin Dells in the Libertarian primary in September.
