Nuggets pick up second-rounder
By Benjamin Hochman
The Denver Post

The Nuggets decided to make a move on draft night, a minor one, acquiring second-rounder Sonny Weems from Chicago for a second-rounder in 2009. The trade is pending league approval.

The 6-foot-6 forward from Arkansas was taken with the 39th pick overall. He averaged 15.0 points last season as a senior.

declining? :lol

JR/Melo/Nene with LK off the bench..........nuggets aren't declining. They just need to unload their old fellas. Spurs are the old fogies, whilst the Nuggets still have a nice young core :lol

what i mean by declining is that AI isnt getting any younger and has too much of a big contract too get rid of.

Karl is not going to get this team to the Finals.
they have no legit PG
no defense
Kmart is pase

declining is not a good word to use. but rather stagnent team

Declining is the perfect word to use when discussing the Spurs though

As the Nuggets watched Thursday's draft unfold, a player they had ranked in the late teens still was available in the second round. And so, Denver couldn't resist. After the Bulls selected Sonny Weems 39th overall, the Nuggets acquired the Arkansas swingman for a 2009 second-round pick in a three-team trade.

"We feel very fortunate to get him where we did," Denver's vice president of player personnel Rex Chapman said.

In the trade, Denver got Weems from Chicago, and Chicago got the rights to Omer Asik, drafted by Portland at No. 36. And then Portland received second-round picks from Denver in 2009 and New York in 2009 (owned by Chicago), plus Chicago's second-rounder in 2010.

Last season, the 6-foot-6 Weems, 21, averaged 15.6 points, making first team all-Southeastern Conference.

"He can fit in the NBA as an energy guy," Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien said.

The Nuggets have scouted Weems for years and most recently saw him at workouts in Orlando, Fla., and Oakland, Calif.

And while it's not necessarily a decision-making trait, Weems can fly. Weems won the NCAA's 2008 dunk contest during the Final Four weekend.

Arguably, his best dunk was from his sophomore year at Fort Smith Junior College. He came down the right side of the court and leaped into the air with the ball in his right hand actually higher than the rim. Underneath him was a helpless defender, thrust to the floor by a dunking Weems' chest.

That dunk is on youtube.com under "Sonny on ESPN top 10 plays."

"I think he and J.R. Smith might have a nice dunk contest or two," Chapman said. "He's a world-class athlete

Make sense for Nuggets, they need to fill the roster with cheap players and you can make cheapest than second round picks. Diawara won't be back, they needed another player to not play. :downspin:

Weems is fuckin athletic as hell. They'd be wise to use him at his fullest potential.

Weems is your JR Smith replacement.

exstatic.....exactly what i was thinking. Obviously he doesn't have the potential of JR but getting another athletic swingman is certainly a sign of getting an insurance policy, just in case we lose JR this offseason and have no Shooting Guard to backup AI.

The thing i love about the draft is in the 2nd rd coz there are no expectations so this guy may not even play, but it will be fun to see if he can do anything if he gets minutes.

Yeah, declining is not the best choice of words when describing the Nuggets because they were never very good in the first place. They have consistently been a low seed playoff team that'll get 0-1 wins, and I think that may be the case again this year... if not missing the playoffs.

and JR/Melo/Nene with LK off the bench is an impressive core, but nowhere near championship caliber. Melo is a loser and until he changes that the Nuggets aren't going anywhere.
