Sony doesn't care if the PS3 lost them money, they used it as a tool to win the disc format war of Blu-Ray vs. HDDVD, and they succeeded. They never cared about making an affordable console with all the money to be had in monopolizing the HD disc format market.
console makers have always lost money on the consoles themselves. the money is in the software.
