The Sacramento Kings found a way to keep their starting point guard, Beno Udrih, despite some fierce competition.
Udrih and the Kings have verbally agreed to a five-year contract for the full mid-level exception, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com.
Assuming the full mid-level comes in at $5.5 million this year, Udrih would get a contract worth $33.3 million. The same source said Udrih would have a player option for the fifth year of his contract.
"I am so happy and honored to be returning to the Kings," Udrih told ESPN.com. "They took a chance on me and believed in me. I can't wait to get back to my teammates and the city that has become home to me."
The Kings outbid the Los Angeles Clippers, who also offered Udrih a five-year deal for the mid-level. Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy flew to New York and met with Udrih at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday morning -- the earliest NBA teams were permitted to commence negotiations and strike verbal agreements with free agents. Dunleavy was persuasive, but at the end of the day Udrih wanted to return to the team that gave him his big break.
The new contract is quite a turnaround for Udrih. For his first three years in the league Udrih was a little used back-up in San Antonio. At the start of last season, he was traded to Sacramento to fill in for the injured Mike Bibby. Udrih broke out and averaged 12.8 points and 4.3 assists for the Kings last season.
Chad Ford covers the NBA for ESPN Insider.

Wow. It will be interesting to see if Mr. Udrih comes to camp with a chip on his shoulder or a bag of tacos for the guys.

Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
That's a crapload of breakfast tacos.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Beno celebrated with 5 mexican escorts, an 8 ball, and 5 bags of tacos from Taco Bueno.
OLE!
BTW Sacramento, you just failed miserably.

Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
$33M for Beno. ROFL. Kid was injury prone while fighting for his NBA life. Imagine now that he has guaranteed money in the bank no matter what he does. Wow.
Although this does mean two things:
1) RC made a very good pick. A late first rounder getting a max MLE deal down the line means that RC was right. He just didn't factor in that Beno's soft mentality wouldn't mesh with Pop's coaching style. But the NBA talent was definitely there.
2) The Spurs are absolutely horrible at trading assets when their value is highest. When is the last time the Spurs made a trade that was anything remotely close to a "sell high". I can't think of one in the last decade. Trading Beno after his rookie season should have been the way to go. Even during the middle of the second season. Not after he hit rock bottom.
Oh well, the Spurs are 2 for their last 2 in identifying point guard talent late in the first round. Let's hope that becomes 3 for 3.

Yeah but at the time, it didn't make any sense at all to trade him.

Pop ran Beno's trade value down into the Earth's core.

$33 million for fucking Udrih??? Petrie is a jackass. This is almost as bad as his signing of John Salmons.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
I dunno, Mikki Moore is right up there.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Once in the Doghouse, the trade value plumments.
Exhibit A: Matt Bonner
The guy has to be played to pique some interest around the league. Otherwise, we are relegated to Bonner and some broken down vets as trade assets.
Our three draft picks could evolve into something but their respective contracts really make them nothing more than filler.
Free Javtokas!! Could be tradeable if the right situation comes up.

How is he any better of a trade asset than anyone else?

Yeah it did. Beno folded in the playoffs. Paino had already emerged. NVE was brought in. That was the perfect time to sell high and get good value.
But that's not how the Spurs operate, for whatever reason.

Eh, they would've been labled nuts.
I guarantee you Pop wasn't ready to give up on him at that time either.
Maybe I'm wrong.

A signed Javtokas that is getting some PT would have value as an asset if the Spurs were inclined to make a trade. Of course his rights are not worth much but if he were brought over and was not a total bust, all of a sudden the Spurs would have more options such as packages that could include Udoka, the rookes, vets.
I am not saying sign him to trade him because that is stupid by itself but in the past our bench players were of very little value in regards to trading except for the expiring contracts here and there.

Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Wow.
Well, I guess they are expecting more out of him eh?

Can somebody fill me in on the taco references, where Beno is concerned? Was that his food of choice or something, while he was in SA?

Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
I here you Timvp on the trade value point....no body wanted Beno while we had him, now all of a sudden he is commanding a 5 year $33 mil deal & we basically got nothing in return for him...I wanted to trade him to the Clipps last year & take a flyer on Karalov(sp?), tall SF kid from Russia.. it would have been better than nothing basically

It has been posted here before that Beno was quite the fan of Taco Cabana during his tenure in our fair city.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
I agree they should have gotten ridden of him when they decided he wasn't going to get playing time, especially when NVE, as bad as he was, got the nod over Beno towards the middle of the season.
So it's not our drafting that's bad, it's that we can't always develop players once they get here.
In that regard, it seems like Hill is a 'Pop guy' so that should help his chances immensely. Even if he does suck donkey balls, he'll probably still get PT.
Pop is fair in one regard: if one player is in the doghouse, there's usually a different player in the anti-doghouse who plays way too much, even when they suck horribly. NVE, Finley, Horry...
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Beno's gonna be great in all 14 games he doesn't feel like pissing away.
Amazing what guaranteed money will do to a guy.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
yup. they should have traded Beno early or middle of 2006.
I think Pop just kept him around to torture his lazy ass.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
I don't think the Spurs wanted to trade Beno until last summer when he started talking shit to the media.

Well,
He fooled them. Amazing. An idiot savant, I say. Those hamstrings are tightening as we speak.
Party time for Beno - time to kick back and relax now.

Mhm. I will not say: "I have told you..."
And really, what did you all expect will happen? He won't get his contract?

Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Sometimes all it takes is a new fresh start. New team, new town, new system, new player. Beno is that player.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Pretty much the same player, just a much worse team.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
forgive me or not......beno is better the jacque, damon, and hill put together.(why manu had to play so much point guard and eventually was not worth much come PO time)..imo we dumped the wrong guy...we could have let him go now.....imo dumping beno and replacing him with damon cost us a trophy....jacque couldnt do jack, neither could damon.....so good for beno...he deserves it....and the spurs FO knows during the season they let go of the wrong guy....and the person people should be rofl are jacque and mighty mouse....those are choke artist.....
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Use your brain for a second Mr. Spurs. Beno, if he had stayed would have been an unrestricted FA in San Antonio. You do understand unrestricted don't you? There is no way on God's green earth that Beno was going to stay in SA beyond last year. He did not like his role, he got lazy, on and on. He wanted out. The Spurs let him go and he was able to fool the Kings. Cutting him did him a favor it turned out.
He was a liability here due to his lack of clutchness and being turnover machine. Now he can draw the big dollars and be a rock star in Sac town. No pressure. It suits him well.

Agreed, especially after Pop knew that he was going to sink or swim with NVE that next year. There was no reason not to move Beno for value.
My only argument would be that nobody is particularly good at selling players at their highest.

The only thing I've seen that prompted the Spurs to move Beno was Beno's going to the press wanting to be moved.

no, no, no. Beno never belonged on the Spurs in the first place. That was RC's choice and Beno is too much of a puss to deal with a head coach like Pop. Beno had a couple of years to show his worth and he never did. Beno's playing time dropped, because his play got worse and worse. Pop wanted a player like Jacque, because he's a solid PG, and he can defend. Beno is a shooter/scorer that didn't fit in our system, and his head couldn't fit through the damn locker room door. How the hell can you be a bad player and go to the media to ask for a trade? That's retarted. Beno cheated himself out of a spot on this team. No reason to blame Pop.

Guess what Mrspur, you have not been watching the Spurs going back to 1978 - I can tell given the elementary sentence structure you use. I hope English is your second language.
I have followed this team through good and not so good for pretty much its entire NBA existence, so no, your knowledge base of the Spurs is not going to exceed mine. Perhaps Beno could beat JV in a game of horse, but his effectiveness here was limited by his injuries and lack of poise in the clutch. Plus, he simply was not as good as Tony Parker. Beno was a below average NBA player in San Antonio, and he did not have the mental toughness to succeed in the San Antonio system.
If you think Beno was going to stay here in San Antonio, then you are a freaking moron - iow you need to care about his FA status determining where he plays. Beno's rookie contract was to expire at the end of the 07-08 season, and the Spurs were not going to pay this guy to stay around given his poor play after his rookie year. For two entire seasons all he was proficient at was getting hurt, turning the ball over. and in the end complaining about his role to the Slovenian media. He became a liability to a team trying to win championships, and JV is a much smarter basketball player, even if he is not as talented as Beno.
Every time Beno got an opportunity here, he screwed up or got hurt. He had no confidence in himself. Then he goes to some sympathetic media outlets and complains about his role. Pop did NOT hold back this guy, he was incapable of ever beating out Tony Parker (they are the same age) and he went into a shell.
If you don't care about the FA status of this player which guaranteed his departure from SA and the fact that Beno would be no more than a career backup in San Antonio (both absolutely true), then I can't help you. 95% of the posters here, a number of whom actually do have more knowledge about basketball than I do, would completely agree with me.
Next.

While Beno was such a mental midget that Pop's abrasiveness didn't mesh well with him, in 2 out of his 3 years - he was given every opportunity to be successful in the back-up role.
In year 1, we got very good early results, mixed later results, then eventually he became property of lindsey hunter in the finals.
In year 3, he sucked early, sucked in the middle, and sucked at the end. Vaughn's hustle and unspectacular play represented a HUGE upgrade over what we had been getting from the 2nd string PG up until that point.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Thank God JV never turned the ball over, as evidenced by his never having been benched for two or three weeks at a time as punishment.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
It wasn't really the turnovers in '07, Beno's turnover ratio was actually pretty decent (only 2 per 40 minutes, just slightly higher than Vaughn's).
It was his terrible shooting (when a shoot-first PG is only hitting 37%, 28% from 3, he's giving you nothing offensively) and complete inability to defend anybody.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
i bet yah he will spend most of it at the maloofs casino anyway...BENO PWNED

Funny how Pop would pull him and keep him out of the next ten games after he turned the ball over or the Spurs allowed a basket. I seem to recall a meaningless Rockets game at the end of the regular season where his two crucial turnovers became the reason he barely saw the floor in the playoffs.
Again, I'm really glad he's gone, but Pop isn't remotely blameless for his handling. Reggie Theus is not a basketball genius.
-
Re: Beno says he and Kings agree to five-year contract
Beno started talking shit in the media and the Spurs decided he wasn't worth paying the lux tax to keep around.
Still, RC and Pop should've coordinated their efforts to showcase his soft ass a little bit in order to get a better deal than avoiding the lux tax.

I agree that once he opened his mouth, he had to be gone, but that was right at the end of his time here. It should never have come to that, in my opinion, and the Spurs should have recognized that he was never going to meet Pop's expectations and gotten something for him before they had to dump him when he had negative value. He clearly has more value than that now.

Again, I'm really glad he's gone, but Pop isn't remotely blameless for his handling. Reggie Theus is not a basketball genius.
If he couldn't handle a full court press against 3rd line stiffs from Houston, and thats pops fault for not trusting him?
Got it.

Two turnovers made him a bad player in a game where Ginobili had three, Van Exel had two and Barry had two?
Got it. I guess that's why every team that faces him just runs a press and he turns the ball over six times a game until Theus pulls him out. I guess that's why they kept Mike Bibby on the team and didn't re-sign Beno to a contract.

Pop never pulled him for entire games early in the '07 season. Even with Vaughn taking his spot halfway through the year, Beno still appeared in 73 games and averaged 13 minutes.
When Beno was the second stringer, he was playing in every game and averaging closer to 17 minutes.
