DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Sources: Center Diop commits to Mavericks
By Marc Stein
Updated: July 2, 2008, 4:03 PM ET
Free-agent center DeSagana Diop on Tuesday gave a verbal commitment to sign a new contract to return to Dallas Mavericks, according to NBA front-office sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that Diop, traded by the Mavericks to New Jersey in February as part of the Jason Kidd deal, will receive the Mavericks' full mid-level exception in a five-year deal starting at nearly $6 million.
Diop cannot officially sign and the Mavericks cannot officially comment until July 9, which is the first day NBA teams can announce signings and trades after a league-wide moratorium on roster moves is lifted.
Diop was a key member of the Dallas team that toppled its in-state rivals from San Antonio and reached the 2006 NBA Finals. It was the franchise's first trip beyond the Western Conference finals.

Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Too rich for my blood. Not for Diop at least.
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
I think that's a bit too much for a guy limited on offense. I wanted the Spurs to pick him up, but not for that much.
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
I don't think he's worth that much. He will help them though.
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
The entire MLE???
:lmao :lmao :lmao
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
It was dumb trading him away like he was worthless. It's even dumber throwing the whole MLE at him to bring him back.

He'll definitely help them. But for a team as financially strapped as the Mavs I'd think they would have done something a bit more...frugal.

Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Full MLE for Diop is crazy.
I guess Mavs will be back to the defense first philosophy they had a couple of years ago.
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
One less potential landing spot for Maggette.
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Cuban can't get out of his own way. :lol
I like Diop for his paint presence, but no way he's worth that much $$$.
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
I wasn't even sold on Diop for the LLE because he's the second worst offensive player in the NBA behind Jason Collins. Damn good defender but he almost gives it all back on the other end.

Assuming Diop cracks the starting lineup again for the Mavs, that will make 2 out of their 5 starters who can't shoot! (the other being Kidd)

Especially considering the Mavs could use a legit shooting guard.

Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
I guess Diop and Dampier will have some locker room talks to wonder who has the most screwed Cuban. :)
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Imagine if the spurs sign maggette for the same price that the mavs are signing diop for. That'd be Suh-weet.
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
First Beno and now Diop
:lmao :lmao:lmao
That's why Kings and Mavs never won anything
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
That's crazy Rasho Nesterovic money!
But since money is not a great concern of Cuban's, I guess it's at least a move that keeps other teams from getting him. He is decent insurance against Oden, Bynum, Chandler...
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
I really think Cuban falls in love with his players to the point that it is detrimental to his team.
On Dallas sports radio, they keep talking about all these guys they would like to make moves for, but even they admit Cuban doesn't want to give up anybody to even make a trade.

Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Chances are Kidd will only be there 1 year.Same with Eddie Jones,Jerry Stackhouse and that will clear space the following year. The FA market is very small this year. Basically I think they got Diop back because he is a good back up(6 mil is not that much in a year with noone) and it gets the gang back together for one more run. You are really looking at the team that went to the finals in 2006 with Kidd instead of Harris and of course Avery is gone. That can only be a good thing.
I do think if they get the right deal Howard could be traded but the offer will have to be good considering in my opinion they gave up to much for Kidd. Especially those 2 first round draft choices. So dumb.

Nobody ever said he was shitty, just a decent defender with no offensive game. You Spurs fans elevated him into the second coming of Bill Russell after being giddy over the Kidd trade. Given how well the Kidd acquisition worked out, Spurs fans don't have to suck Gana's Diop to blast us for trading Harris for Kidd.
I like Diop, but the full MLE is too much. I would rather they split it between Justin Williams and Azubukkake if they want to go young and athletic.

Because there's only a few teams capable of offering him more money than the Spurs can, and so far only Golden State and Philly seem to be interested.
Given his recent comments, he wants to play for a winner, and it's "not always about the money".
You sir, know nothing. You are jealous.

I would be surprised if he signs with Spurs. Its not unthought of but money is money. I'm sure some teams can trade away a middle of the road player to clear up cap room if they really want Maggette.
If Maggette does sign with Spurs I can see him doing it for a 1 year. Didn't Derek Anderson do that and ended up signing for a ton the next year with another team.

Here's an article, written by one of the local Dallas Sportswriters, on how the Mavs seem to be clinging to the past. Based upon the moves they've made, it's pretty clear they've overvalued the components on their team.

Or if he's smart he will sign for 2 years, or 3 years with the option to opt out after the 2nd, because the big money will be there in 2010 with that free agent crop proected to be great, and not after next season. Then, he could either get a nice extension from San Antonio, or a very good offer from someone else, while we go get someone else.

Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Need a Shooting guard.
Sign?
An offensively inept center :lmao

I think at this point in Cubans life he wants a competitive team for sure but also his priorities have changed since he first bought the team. He is trying to buy the Cubs, he produces movies, he has a HD station, no telling what else he does since he bought the Mavericks.
Lets not all forget Don Nelson put this team together not Cuban. Cuban made it fun for the fans and his players but without winning (Nelson) he would just be another owner. I am curious how he does in the future and I hope trading the future of the team for Kidd is not a tell.

Spurs are in same Division and what Mavs do can directly effects the Spurs plus only 230 miles seperates the two cities. I am guessing there are more Mavs fans that represent in the Spurs forum then any other NBA team here. I lived in SA 10 years and Dallas 5 years. I know lots of both fans that live in the enemies cities. Some Spur fans want Diop. I think that is why.

Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Why is this guy so hyped? He reminds me of a younger Eric Dampier.
The Mavs still have a lot of holes to fix, but I guess they now have a decent backup C. All they need now is a swingman to replace 90-year old Stack/Jones, and a backup PG.

Are you fuckin retarded? This deal is being almost universally panned by Mavs fans. Nobody likes bringing Diop back for this much money. And nobody thinks Diop is anything special. Our stance on Diop has never changed - he's a decent defensive specialist and backup center.

Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
Going into the off-season, I'd say the Mavs had four major weaknesses or areas of concern:
1) poor coaching and chemistry
2) not enough interior defense
3) lack of size and scoring at the 2
4) lack of post scoring
Well, supposedly they've addressed the first two, but even with Carlisle and Diop, that's not enough to get this team back to the elite level.
When it comes to a shooting guard, would the Nets be satisfied for just expiring contract garbage for Vince? I know they probably want him off their books before 2010.
-
Re: DeSagana Diop Back with the Mavs for Full MLE
LOL at the thought of Rick Carlisle as someone who's going to improve the chemistry. Maybe short term, but in 2 years Avery's reign won't look so bad.

Well for starters, the average shelf-life of an NBA coach not named Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan or Gregg Popovich is 3 years, so what's your point? I would improve the chemistry. Avery was not the source of all of the Mavs problems, but he did have to go.

Carlisle will let Howard smoke a bowl in the locker room. Maybe he'll be able to beat out the Rockets for 2nd best in Texas.
