Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
That seems to be where we are at.

Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
Add "take it, Duhon" (Orl) and "accept the MLE, Posey" (Bos).
BTW, I certainly hope your avatar helps in the Maggette sweepstakes. ;)

Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
I do not think Josh Smith can do anything, he is RFA and has no say. If the Hawks want to match, he will be a hawk.

If he turns down Philly's offer sheet, it certainly doesn't help with our pursuit of Maggette (time factor).
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
Does Philly go after Maggette if they lose out on Smith? The media thinks so.
They're kinda limited in the Brand sweepstakes. But do they immediately go to a small as their backup plan?

How much can the Sixers offer him? More than the 7 million the clippers had?
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
Maybe the Sixers split up their cap space and go after Thomas and a lesser wing.
:-/

$11 mil starting, I believe, or $63.9 mil total.
So they won't be a player. Unless Elton really likes Philly.

Doesn't Philly have to worry about signing Iggy Hops?

True. How much is he going to get? Would they really offer Maggette that much? Bristol, Connecticut hopes so.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
I mean how come no one on earth anywhere is talking about what kind of contract Iggy Hops will be getting? I mean, last year the whole debate was that he wanted a max contract and many said he was not worth it.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
Seriously, no one in any major media is mentioning Iggy as a top free agent really. Could not Golden State make a run at him?

That's the thing. GS is just sitting out there with the possibility of going after some RFA's. What do they care? If they don't get one of Brand, Arenas, or Davis then they are rebuilding. If you are rebuilding do you take a 23 year old or a 28 year old?

Maggette ain't going to boston to come off the bench

I thought it's their intention to get one of the Josh's. Offer Smith the big contract, if they match, they'll offer Childress a large contract. I believe this leaves Phillies money tied up. So, I'd say Philly is tied up.
I think GS is the only one to worry about.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
Now that it has set in, I am shocked that we have heard no news of anyone talking to Andre...not even Philly.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
why would GS go after Maggette when they could offer a max contract or close to it to a younger, more than likely more impact player like Andre Iguodala?
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
I think Philly might be waiting to see if Memphis or even Golden State sets the market for Iggy.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
I guess the fact that Philly has close to the most money and would easily match any low offer means no one is willing to even talk to him. But they better be careful, he could just play out this last year of his contract at the qualifying offer and then become an UFA and leave them for nothing if they do not treat him right.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
I mean, he turned down a 57 million dollar contract from Philly already.

Will Warriors court Igoudala, Josh Smith if Brand stays in LA?
Unrestricted free agent Elton Brand seemed likely to re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, despite what was being reported as a 5-year $100 million offer from the Golden State Warriors. But if the Warriors were to come up empty, they conceivably could turn their attention to Atlanta Hawks' Josh Smith or even Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Rob Pelinka, Iguodala's agent, indicated that there had been interest shown in his client other than by the Sixers, but declined to be specific; he did say he expected to meet with Sixers president/general manager Eddie Stefanski within the next week to 10 days.
Stefanski has said all along that his plan includes re-signing Iguodala and Lou Williams, the Sixers' two restricted free agents. Those developments, though, would come after a move to add an impact player to the roster, whether in free agency or in trade.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
GS, if they lose out on Brand (as I would expect them to), is in a prime position to go after some young RFAs. They are not a potential playoff team without Baron next season. The average age of their roster is like 22.
Josh Smith would make a lot of sense for them. So would Childress. Iguadola, etc.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
What happens if the contract they sign Iggy to puts them over the cap? Will they be allowed to use the MLE only to sign a FA, or can they go over the cap to sign a guy like Maggette in that scenario as well?
-

And then the Sixers go after Biendrins. It's one great incestuous orgy.

I'm fairly certain that as long as they sign the FA before they AI, they can use all the money under the cap. They can go over the cap matching an offer sheet, since AI is their own RFA. If they sign AI first and the contract takes them to, or over the cap then they are limited to the MLE.

So is Philly allowed to go over the cap to sign Iggy and Josh Smith? How would that work?

Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
So they can sign Josh Smith to say an eleven million dollar contract with raises them to 45 million or so. Then they can offer a max contract to AI for 20 million after that?

Bruno or MB would be able to answer it for sure, but I believe so - as long as Atlanta doesn't match the offer sheet.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
Exceptions can only be used if you are over cap, with the exception of MLE only if you are under cap by an amount less than MLE. E.g., if cap is 59M and you have 54M and MLE is 6, you can spend 1M over cap, not 5MIL and then get the MLE.
As for Philly, they can't use any type of bird right if they spend up to their cap. As I said, exceptions don't work unless you are over cap. To match an offer, they have to have that amount under cap.

I stand corrected. I thought that a team can go over the cap to re-sign their own FAs. Why does this not work with offer sheets? Or is it they can match offer sheets only if they are already over the cap?
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
So they could not offer Josh a 16 million dollar contract then offer Iggy a 18 million dollar contract? How do teams get so far over the cap if there are all these rules in place then?
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
This should be on a GS board...
I think the Warriors would be best served to trade Harrington for Hinirich; play Ellis at the two; resign Azubuike; offer Iggy and Smith big contracts in the 12 to 15 million range, hoping to land one of the two.
They'd return a team of Hinirich, Ellis, Smith, Wright and Biedrins, with a good bench. That's not bad. It's about as good as they have right now.
Smith and Iggy are both better players than Maggette.
From a Spurs perspective, I think this would also be best for us.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
What about Stephen Jackson

He had a shitty playoff run. That dinged his stock a bit. I'm thinking if you want a MAX deal, you should, at a minimum, put a team on your back and take them to the second round.

It takes years of signing your own players over the cap and adding MLE deals, but it can be done.
-
Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
I agree with him taking a hit, but I doubt that anyone looking at him got scared off of offering him a big contract because of the playoff performance. He can be a key piece and could command a lot of money. Just surprised things have been so quiet around him.

I know, but when you sign your own players and players to MLE deals doesn't that count against your cap but not put you into luxury tax? How do these teams get into luxury tax area if you are not allowed to sign players if you are over the cap?

Ginobili doesn't start.
Bowen won't play at the end of the game.
Probably finish with:
Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Magette, and Udoka.

Finley played 27 minutes a game last season, Maggette would get those plus some.

Re: Turn it down, Elton; Take it, Josh.
I hope the General Managers around the league are as low on JR smith as Stein is :lol
The way this is shaping up, i wouldnt be suprised if the Spurs missed out on Maggette and some team panicked and offered JR more than the MLE..... no way do the Nuggets match an offer for more than the MLE.
