Isola: I Wouldn't be surprised if Marbury ends up in San Antonio
Jettisoning Marbury is positive step
Frank Isola
July 5, 2008
Here’s a newsflash: Stephon Marbury is a better player than Chris Duhon. Then again, Marbury has been the team’s best point guard since the day he arrived in the ill-fated trade with the Phoenix Suns five years ago. And what has that gotten the Knicks other than a lot of losses and plenty of controversies?
Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni fully understand that Duhon can’t compare to Marbury when it comes to pure talent. But Walsh and D’Antoni also realize that you can’t change the culture at Madison Square Garden without removing the player who has come to symbolizes everything we despise about the Knicks this decade.
Marbury has been the Knicks franchise player for five years and he has done more to harm the franchise in that time than just about any player in club history. It is time to move on. Walsh and D’Antoni know it and deep down I believe that Marbury knows that he needs a change of venue. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up on Miami or becomes a back-up with San Antonio or Boston.
The uninformed will buy into Marbury’s claim that “this will be my year.” Here’s another newsflash: He’s been saying that for the past five years. Maybe things will be better for Marbury in the 2008-09 season but it just won’t happen in New York.
Walsh and D’Antoni need to rebuild the roster and improve the chemistry in the locker room. Removing Marbury accomplishes both goals. We know, we know. Duhon is no Marbury. And that’s what we like about him already.

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
nah.the media likes to throw the SPURS name all time. won't happen.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
he'd be a disaster. sure he's got all the talent in the world but he's helped ruin teams wherever he's been.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
No, thank you. Send this "poison" elsewhere... Marbury is the ultimate "anti-Spurs".
-

Ah, well chingao the title can't be edited anymore. You get the point, anyways.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
lots of talent...but a head case. i'll pass and i know the spurs have no interest in him. didn't he say he was going to play in italy when his contract was up...so farewell.

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
100% just throwinig something out there. No reason to believe it could, would or even should happen as far as the Spurs are concerned.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
He needs to be in a big market so he can push his shoes--somewhere like LA, Chicago or Miami.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
Fuck no, not even for the minimum.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
Never in a million years would this happen.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
I don't think he would want to play back up to Tony Parker
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
No way the Spurs front office would be that stupid.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
not gonna happen, but I actually wouldn't mind it..
if we get a guy with Marbury's talent for the MINIMUM, where's the harm? if he's disruptive, he gets released..if he's signing for the minimum, releasing him doesn't do any significant damage to any cap room..
there's no reason not to sign him if he's willing to play for the minimum..releasing him would be easy..
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
A back up to Tony, Vaugn, G Hill...who would have thnk it.

Lets go to the next stupid idea

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
Eh, hed be the kind of point Pop likes at times, a scoring agressive offensive guy.
If he came for the minimum was on a short leash and accepted his bench spot, i could think of worse guys.
He seemed like a good team guy with Phoenix in 03 when he had a decent team around him.

Vaughn at the minimum.
Marbury at the minimum (and keeping his mouth shut).

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
There are still a lot of desperate enough teams out there in need of a PG who would sign Marbury in a second; Memphis, Golden State, even the Magic come to mind.
There's about a .0000000000000001% chance he ends up as the Spurs backup. :lol

He won't win a championship with any of those teams. At his age, you have to become desperate and leach on to a contending team. Lakers perhaps?

Nah, I think they're pretty set at PG with Fischer, Vuijic, and Farmar.

I don't think Marbury is going to L.A., but Vujacic doesn't play PG.

So you're saying there's a chance? Oh the humanity......!!!!!

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
this is just another sample of how this guy Isola truly doesn't know a whole lot about the NBA.... LJ would make this guy look like an idiot easily...
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
The concept behind his sneaker company is Spurs material, sort of, theoretically. As a player he seems like a disaster and a distraction.
But seriously, like we really need a 4TH STRING POINT GUARD?
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
Lol, why would the Spurs take a guy who trumpets himself as the best point guard there is in the NBA? Then does nothing at all to improve an overpaid team.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
If every fan gets a free pair of Starburys everytime we score 100 points, then by all means come on down.

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
Only if David Lee comes with him.

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
who needs marbury when you have tpark and hill...

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
Let's get real now? Marbury is owed 20 million this year, do you really think the Spurs have that kind of money to throw at him? They would have to give up Parker/ Ginobili or Duncan to get him, and trust me that will never happen!!! He is very good but I don't think we have a chance of taking that contract over. I think we should just keep our offer on the table with Maggette, and pray that he will say yes. Because someone like that would seriously help the Spurs out and add youth at the same time. Which we badly need. And then I say go re-sign Finley and Thomas, and we might be holding that Larry O'brien at the end of next season. Them two are getting up there in age, but they are very valuable to the Spurs regardless of what anyone thinks.:lobt2::flag:

Slow down now :( - this whole thread is based off of an assumption that Marbury is bought out or cut by the Knicks, which means that he could sign a new contract with the Spurs. It sounds like the consensus is one of two options - give him a try for a vet. minimum contract or send Pop to convince him that it would be in his best interest to play overseas (as he claimed he would once his Knicks' contract was up).

MARBURY > BENO > VAUGHN
Maggette and Marbury and were set

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
Yeah scrubary is pretty bad, but lets look at it like this.
If hes willing to take a small salary, be a team player, take a bench role. Can you think of a better back up point guard?

If his focus really was about winning, he would have acted more like Malik Rose this past season then, well, Starbury. Offseason lawsuit behavior included.
And I don't really hold that much stock in the whole 'new team, new player, new start' belief. If that really were the case, you would have seen that in New Jersey, Phoenix, or New York.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
First, Marbury has to be waived and I'm not sure Knicks are ready to do that.
If hill sucks ass in SL, going after Marbury for the min or the LLE could be really good idea.
We should have a good idea if, as Pop said, Hill will be able to help Spurs in his rookie year as soon as the first SL game. In one week, Spurs will play their first game against Grizzlies, that is to say Mayo, Conley and Crittenton.

He would never take a backup role because he's STARBURY - which is part of his problem.

That would be nice, I would love to have Marbury on our team. It would give us a great player who can score, pass, etc. But I do not see Knicks buying him out of the 20 million left on his contract. And another thing, I have been keeping up on the movement and possible movement of players. And not once have I seen anything on a Marbury destination or even a possible destination?
I am not trying to be negative or criticize you in no way, but I just can't see it sorry?:(:downspin::lobt2:

Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
It would be a easy decsion to make. You would sign him. If he gets out of hand you cut him. That simple. In fact SA might be the best place for that under achieving loser. Nothing to do but play ball. Hardly any reporters to mouth off to. He can't black mail Pop. His shoe line will do great in SA. Very affordable He won't be the man in SA. 3 rings says alot (strike season does not count,my opionion)It probably would be more like a prision term for him but believe it or not some people get rehabilitated.
I say he is LONG GONE though. This idiot said he was going to play in another country and do for basketball overseas what David Beckham is doing here. I willl always remember when he was traded for Jason Kidd, he said he got the better end of that deal and Kidd took that same team with him running the point to 2 finals. Chances are he would be cut but what the hell, take a chance if it pops up.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
This team doesn't need a Marbury. I don't think he would know how to even approach the game as a role player.
Pass.

If you are saying that you haven't seen anything about Marbury being waived or bought out, then I will suggest that you haven't been following the player movement as much as you claim. If you are saying that you haven't heard anyone mention the Spurs as a possible destination, then I will suggest that you haven't read the opening article of this very thread. I'm not saying that it is a credible source - it is one journalist's opinion, but it is the opinion that is the hypothetically-basis of this thread.
For the record, I don't think that there is any chance possible that Marbury ends up with the Spurs - even if he is released or bought out. So, we are in agreement there.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
Hey, at least we'd get to hear him say stuff like "bringin some more of that same flavor, you know what I'm sayin", as he did on the 2003 Championship DVD.
-
Re: Speculation Going on About Marbury Possibly Joining the Spurs
I'd consider J.Vaughn starting the point before allowing marbury to put on a spurs uniform.
