East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
Just saw Ryan and Wilbon on PTI discussing Maggette to the C's. The consensus seemed to be that even though he would be coming off the bench, play limited minutes and might never get paid more than the MLE, joining the Celtics is a "no brainer" because "they're the champs."
Funny, I don't recall that sentiment being expressed before for a prospective free agent the Spurs pursued after winning a title...

Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
this is no surprise.
the media will do all they can to make these celtics a dynasty. by lobbying for big name players to join them if available.
inside sources know the spurs are close to signing him and know if they get him that they are the favorites by far to get to the Finals next year (if healthy)
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
Those fools on PTI suck. They no nothing about B-Ball.....the whole media machine is caught up in the lakers celtics nastalga.....sp I promise no chance he signs there to come off bench!
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
espn seems to refuse to say the spurs.......... they want to hype up the celtics as much as possible......... this is why the spurs never get good ratings because they are never talked about like all the other worthless teams
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
ESPN is so scared that the Spurs could get Maggette.
so the best way to prevent it is to not even talk about it.
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
If the Spurs had won it all this year those same people would be saying he should sign with the Celtics (or elsewhere) by arguing that it's better to be the missing piece that de-thrones the champs than a role player on a team that just won it all without you.
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
also, the celtics would be stupid to sign maggette and not posey.
why fix something if its not broken?
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
Wilbon and that other geek are just tryin' to get paid is all. They'll say what appeals to larger demographics.
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
That same team credited Motta with making up "the fat lady sings" line, a couple of months ago

+1
And as many of you guys know Bob Ryan is a blatant homer from Boston posing as a sportswriter. He thinks the world revolves around all the Boston/NYC rivalries.
I do hope Maggette doesn't forget the state tax that he'd pay if he goes there or the fact that his ass will be on the bench watching hobbled Ray Allen play all the crunch time minutes.

Time knows no boundries, recognizes no champions, has no loyalties...
With the ain't broke approach with a sports team, every team will always get better every year, and never take a step back...
Now that everybody knows what these guys do, they are scouted that much harder. As time passes, they will be more an more predictable, which isn't even taking into account that injuries are a factor, as is loosing hinger over time of winning.
The Spurs tweak every year, as a combination of fiscal responsobility and talent savvy. By NOT havng the same squad every year, the Spurs give themselves a chance to show a different look, and take other teams by suprise, despite the fact they have had a target on their back, the size of Texas, since 1999.

i can see what you are saying, but i just dont agree with the fact that the celtics are pursuing maggette over posey. its not like the celtics have an offensive struggle. they have guys who are GREAT offensive players! maggette is a potential allstar who will not play the minutes he deserves in boston. and to not give the guy who contributed so much to gaining that 17th championship the money he deserves is stupid. Posey is slowly becoming the next Robert Horry, and if you want to build a dynasty you gotta have your unselfish star players and role players who are clutch.

To be honest, I agree. Posey is the better fit right now, for all the reasons that you mention. But to totally ignore the possibilty of adding someone like CM would be irresponsable on the Celtics' part.
And I also dissagree with the PTI thing... to come to a team that just won a title carries 2 problems that are both hard to mitigate:
1) You are perceived as riding on the coattails if they win.
2) You are the reason they lost if they loose.
It does not matter if it is true or not.
McDyesse escapes this, as with the huge lineup changed experenced in 2004, and the clause in his contract that released the Pistons should McD be injured, he was not viewed as either of these initially (no should he).
But even Malone to LA, with a year removed from a title, was still dogged for his defection to a favorite. Had he gone to San Anton... well, it would have been a dissaster for him no matter what.
Doesn't mean the Lakers or the Spurs would have been wrong for taking the oppertunity.

Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
Bob Ryan was talking this on PTI? That explains it. Its nice to be a reporter from Boston. He is just lobbying for "his" team. Magette will get paid his. Just sit and wait. Think of all the teams that keep popping up. Maggette and his agent must be loving this.
I like Bob Ryan but to think Maggette is better taking less money and coming off the bench is pretty LAME. If Maggette takes that deal believe me, there is a wink and a nod for a bigger contract in the future.
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
That east coast media bias is in full swing. Not only do they have him already going to the Celtics, but it would seem all other suitors should just give up. These guys are nothing but big blowhards - and they keep getting bigger by the year.
Both of these guys are supposed to be noted basketball experts, but their obvious disdain for any teams that are not in their preferred geographical area is sickening.

Sure. I would think that if Maggette takes the MLE then he will be stepping into a situation in which he will start and get a ton of minutes (35+ mpg). I also would think that he would be joining a team which could be pay him in 2010 or be able to S&T him to a team that will. If you're going to get someone else to pay you more than the MLE as a 30 to 31 year old, then you're probably going to want to have started the last couple of seasons and put up big stats.
Boston seems like a pipe dream for Maggette. I think the Spurs and the Magic are the two teams which can offer Maggette what he wants today and are in a position to pay him in 2010.
Of course, the Sixers or Warriors could make this all academic, but I'm not sure Maggette really makes sense for either or that they are even likely to go after him once Brand finally accepts the Clippers' offer.
I'm also not sure Maggette lets this drag on too long. Just as the Spurs could lose out on free agents while waiting on Maggette, Maggette can lose out on the MLE teams he prefers by waiting on the Warriors and Sixers to lose out on the RFAs they are targeting and offer him a contract as a fallback.

Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
I like PTI and IMO I don't see anything wrong with saying a guy should join a championship team. Makes sense, maybe not money wise, but who wouldn't want to play on a championship team....unless the money was more important.

It's one thing to say he should join a championship team. It's another to lobby for it. Too often, these so-called journalists allow their biases to get in the way of their duties as journalists. We all know that Ryan is as old as dirt and has been covering the Celtics for 30-40 years. So it's no surprise that HE would be publically waving the Maggette flag for the Celtics.
Remember these ESPN blowhards thought Finley would end up in Chicago, PHX, Miami before he chose SA.

that is why spurs are known for there back to back championship .. oh wait..:depressed

Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
Ryan actually expressed some skepticism about the move. He noted that Posey is a first class defender while Magette is more of a scorer. It was Wilbon who called the move a "no brainer".

Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
What's funny is those pathetic fools on PTI have gone to "I don't understand why people think they are boring, we love watching them." They say that after they have called them boring.
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
Those of you hating PTI obviosly havent watched it. That is one of the few shows where the Spurs get a fair shake.
-
Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
Which is why the Spurs were mentioned maybe once in the segment even though they are listed as the frontrunners for Maggette by various outlets.

But it's breaking news that Maggette is considering the Celtics offer.
I'm sure it has nothing to do with where ESPN is located. :lmao

Dude they were the only ones picking the Spurs during the Playoff run this year. They even picked them against the Lakers. They are also big on the big 3 and usually give a fair take when it comes to the Spurs. Not much more you can ask for.

Re: East Coast Media: Maggette to Celtics "no brainer"
Ryan has stated that he loves the Spurs. Wilbon, on the other hand, seemed on the verge of tears during this year's Spurs/Suns beatdown.

That is correct, Ryan has been big on the Spurs for a while now. Wilbon, while not a fan of the Spurs gives props when they are due. He did seem to take the Suns beatdown pretty hard and may have teared up, :lol but in the end he gave props to the better team.

Maybe their FO has the same mentality that our government sometimes has, which is:
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.
