Re: This is what the spurs should try to do, since Maggette is gone
I liked Pietrus the most, but since he is gone, the spurs should sign Azuibuike to the mid level exception money, he will be worth every penny of that.
Great attitude, great player. He would fit in with the team very well, the nice guy image, but that nice guy image would be shed as soon as he stepped on the court methinks.
Check out this vid of him

I think the spurs have to also seriously consider resigning Kurt Thomas, I really don't see any other bigs out there that can help out as much and he has a year of experience already in the Popovich "D" system.
Getting him back and signing Azuibuike to the mid level exception would be a very successful off season. Maybe sneak in Brent Barry if there's any cash left over after that.
Lineup would consist of
PF/C Duncan, Thomas, Oberto, Mahinmi, Bonner
SF Azuibuike, Udoka, Gist
SG Bowen, Ginobili, Barry
PG Parker, Hill, Vaughn
With this type of lineup Popovich should use Ginobili as a 6th man off the bench for either Bowen or Azuibuike depending on matchups. Mainly this is gonna mean less minutes for Bowen and more of a backup role for Bruce for spot duty defensively. His lost minutes will be Azuibuike's gain. Him and a healthy Ginobili on the floor together should be a good offensive tandem. Add in Hill and Mahinmi off the bench and I can see a 2nd team that is very capable of holding its own, with the purpose in mind to develop younger talent like Azu, Hill, and Mahinmi and also to rest the starters for a potential playoff run. I could even see Gist getting some PT or even Bonner depending on which one is producing more, in a last reserve role.
I think this team, if all healthy, could hold its own in the west.

Azu isn't worth the full MLE. Split that with another player and I'll be content.

Perhaps Najera

I'm not huge on the guy but I can live with it. I'd sure rather see Barnes if we pursue a hustle player.

Who does he think he is, Beno Udrih?

lol Well Posey is a proven winner and probably a top 3 perimeter defender in the league so I could see a contender using their full MLE on the guy.

I agree that someone might give it to him, hence my joke. Whether or not he's actually worth that remains to be seen. If the Spurs can keep everyone on the roster except Horry and Finley and sign Posey for whatever keeps them under the cap, that's fine with me.

Oh my god...tightwads around here.... look at how much teams are paying for medicore free agents this year, then look at what Azubuike brings to the table -- he's a young stud with star potential written on him.. he's athletic, he can play a couple positions. Can score.. alot. The FA market is thinning out, he is basically the last hope at obtaining a star quality player swingman.
He is damn well worth the exception.
Posey is in his 30's... if there's any team that needs a young stud its the spurs. Azubuike can be that stud. Posey is not athletic, he's another Bruce Bowen, we already have Bruce Bowen.
Najera is not going to help much with the scoring and also has no athleticism.
Azubuike is clearly the best choice at this point IMO. For the FULL mid level exception if that's what it takes.
