But at least we have Bonner....give RC a raise!
Is Oberto injured!? He played no minutes according to that boxscore. Is argentina just resting him? (If so, why not rest Manu?)
Both Delfino and Oberto are injured.
None of the injuries appear to be serious.
37 points... impressive.
So who listened to Larry Brown to sign Buttler only to trade him and Scola because of cap issues?
If we had Scola, we may have beaten the Lakers.
This Scola incident is going to be even more painful if the Rockets eliminate us in the playoffs. :-(
Maybe we can all continue to cry about it and the past will miraculously change itself.
37 points! Love It!
I don't get why their second best player played the whole game when this one didn't matter one bit. At least Manu was allowed to rest. Nice to see he's still shooting a sweet percentage. I really wish that they'd played their worst five 25 minutes each, let everyone else rest. Nice win though.
You guys should try to bring V-Span over, that would make the trade a little more even.
DD
didn't anthony johnson score 50 in a playoff game? Scola sucks guys..
The dead horse keeps getting beaten because some still defend the front office on the deal.
Bottom-line: It was a bad deal. The organization is not doomed to mediocrity for decades because of it but the front office has lost a lot of it's lustre these past few years.
Mahinmi, Hill, and to a lesser extent Gist are critical to showing how much of the front office was Sam Shuler, Sam Presti or R.C. when it came to finding guys like Tony, Manu and Scola.
This front office has not done anything in the draft since Beno unless the above guys pan out. Laugh about Beno all you want and he didn't fit here but he is still in the league as a very late first rounder.
I agree that its in the past and we need to move on. However, I hate reading posts in here that defend every move the front office makes and by pointing out that the Spurs have won four championships. I think we all know that the Spurs have won four championships, but the issue here is that the front office made a mistake by trading away Scola for a bag of peanuts.
I can't understand why some of you don't admit to that.
wow scola had a nice game..
i still dont know what was worse, letting go of scolla or hiring mighty mouse during the season when we already had proven championship back ups in jacque and beno. imo both stupid moves cost us another ring.(last season) so its try try again. maybe with roger putting in solid minutes at the 1 and 2 we get another chance.:wow
37 points in a non nba game wow impressive
oh wait manu is averaging 32 points in this non nba league
we lost a championship this year because we give up Scola, R.C Buford need to be fired on that!
Scola was hitting mid range jumpers and getting And1's...I watched the game online and knew he scored alot but damn, 37 points, he was ballin' on Kirilenko
People, chill. Argentinians beat a listless Russian team who is arguably the worst in the Olympics. What is the fuzz? 37 Pts is great, but it is not in NBA. Even if it is, what is the big deal, it's only one game. :flag:
Only one game?! Well what about Oberto, have we seen one game, any game, in any league where he's scored more than 30 points? It's such a pathetic disparity in talent!
Maybe Scola isn't NBA all-star talent, but without a smidgen of a doubt, he's better than Oberto and Bonner combined!! Finally, remember this, we signed Bonner and extended Oberto in the SAME YEAR that the Rockets signed Scola. That's how misereable our F.O. has become.
Heck, maybe the brains of that F.O. that drafted Parker and Manu (and even Scola) have long departed for other teams and all we have is a shell of pretenders!
is scola favre
everything he does have to get reported?
ducks is stupid
I don't know what's worse, that deal or giving up Camby for nothing.
It's all screwed up, see the only reason we even have Oberto is that we was a placeholder for Scola. Unfortunately, he overachieved in the second season and the F.O. had the stupidity of extending his contract.
Then we compound the problem when we signed Bonner for a 3 year contract last year for the more than the amount that the Rockets are paying Scola. How in the world is a guy like Bonner remotely comparable to Scola?
:rolleyes
Some still defend the FO because IT WAS NOT AN FO DECISION. Clearly, it was a lux tax imperative which means the OWNERSHIP made the decision, not the FO. Why is that so hard to understand?
Why the hell do so many of you blame RC for a decision that was made by Holt et al???
Scola trade still hurts my brain...
Scola Thread!
Scola is a stud, the Spurs were stupid to give him up, and it probably cost us.
why exactly didn't Scola become a Spur or rather, why did the Spurs give up on him?
At least Manu only played 20 minutes. 40 minutes for Scola? Ouch. Wonder what was up with that?
First of all, he's not averaging 32. Once again you're too stupid to do the most basic research on anything. Secondly, it's pretty lame how you hate on every Argentina player now instead of just Manu. I'm guessing if France was in the tournament you would know every Tony Parker statistic.
you are understand that the Scola trade cost us a championship this year?!?! dont be Buford bitches!
You forget, in the same off-season we signed Bonner for a 3 year contract and extended Vaughns contract.
If we had the inside info like the Rockets, then we would have never signed these two underachievers and would never had a Lux Tax problem.
It was a mistake to have signed Butler, however we compounded that mistake by trying to correct it by not signing Scola. An idiotic move!
Watch the Argentia-Russia game and you'll see how Scola consistently hits the midrange jumper. Just imagine that kind of consistency play beside Tim Duncan! DAMN! SUCH A WASTE!
Dude, you must realize that 85% of the people on this board will a. blindly defend every front office move citing the 4 championship rings and b. argue in favour of whatever timvp says.
What's entertaining is when points a and b conflict with each other and you have negative IQ idiots like T Park swaying to and fro with their opinions without even knowing it...priceless.
Scola is the shiznit. dammit!!!
The Spurs organization is a the top of its class, however to win championships you've got to have top notch razor edged decision making that runs rings around the other F.O. out there. It's not enough to have average F.O. decision making.
What makes it worse is that the Rockets organization is making a career of embarrassing us. Other teams like the Lakers and Hornets are running rings around us by signing great talent for next to nothing. Meanwhile, we continue to bask is the past glory of signing Michael Finley!
The Spurs drafting have been stellar, but we'll still have to wait if that is still true with the likes of Mahinmi and Hill.
BTW... I think Pop should retire... he's tired and doesn't want to make the effort to develop players. I'll take Buldenhozer or Thibodeau as a replacement.
The same people who still bash Scola will be the ones in a few months saying "It's only December, It's only February."
And our offense will still be shit.
----> I saw a video on youtube with Popovich saying that Manu have turned a great player once he landed on the NBA, thats so stupid, Manu was a great player before NBA, Scola is too, spurs managers have a really big problem judgin international talent, everybody in the world can see that Scola is a good player and here on Spurstalk i saw people asking if Scola can play basketball at all, it is just basketball like Manu said. Sorry for my bad english.
Scolaaaaa thread !!!!! :downspin:
No Olympic game is meaningless. It's the Olympics, it's about honor also so you try to win everything.
What I say above plus, this team needs more playing time to get there, they are improving every game.
So you also speak bs here too?
manu averages 19,6 not 32 points, get your facts straight, "geek".
As far as I know, and it's probably what happened,The Spurs FO and Pop never thought Scola's game was gonna translate well to the NBA as it did, they probably thought that He could become a second coming Oberto at the most. They trully understimated him, like they usually do with Euros or Latinos(not NBA proven),It happened to Manu too,he was 4 years in Europe waiting on the Spurs to bring him onboard, and the spurs probably could've won at least 1 more title from 99 to 03,or at least they could've have a better chance to win it.but they didn't.
Shit happens...I guess.
Manu average 20 points in NBA last year and 20 points in Olympics.
It should be noted that NO other NBA teams projected him to be this good. Otherwise, the Spurs would have seen a better offer than cap space and a 2nd rounder. Even the Rockets could have had him a year earlier at a better price.
It's not an excuse, but the Spurs certainly weren't alone.
The proof is in the pudding.
If any other NBA team thought he was going to be this effective, they would have topped the Rockets lowball offer. Hell, if the Rockets knew he was going to be this effective, they would have offered a 1st rounder a year earlier and added him then.
I'm not saying that Scola isn't any good now, but to deny that there were major doubts around the NBA about his game before he joined the league is revisionist history.
The problem with armchair wannabe general managers is they can say or do anything they want. That's why this forum has a million trade suggestions that have Bonner and Vaughn leaving while a talented starter who averages 15 ppg and plays tenacious D magically appears on the new imaginary roster. The only gripe most people here can level against the FO is that they fall short of utopian perfection. That's 100% true. They didn't get Maggette (nobody offering the MLE did), they didn't get JR Smith (Denver gave away Camby to clear cap room so they could match any offer), etc.
Being a GM in the real world involves serious risk analysis-- i.e., gambling-- and no one wins every gamble. The Lakers traded Caron Butler for Kwame Brown-- good move, in retrospect? No way, but then they were smart enough to recover by getting Pau with Kwame's expiring contract. Kobe and many Laker fans came out and criticized their FO for not getting Kidd. Now, Kidd is declining as fast as Bynum is developing, and their FO looks a lot smarter than their fans. Before last year, Boston fans routinely said Ainge was a moron, and Pierce was a whiny, spoiled star who wasn't a winner, etc., etc. Now the fans of both teams will enthusiastically argue that their FOs are the best in the league. You won't see the fans of any other team that has won multiple recent titles and played in the conference finals last year complain about their FOs.... why? because, aside from the Spurs, no other team matching that description even exists.
it doesn't work like that dude.
1-The spurs were the ones following him for years, and keeping up with his stats and overall game. The spurs didn't have to wait until a team would offer a 1st round pick and money for a guy who wasn't followed and scouted in the past, like the spurs did with scola,to realize how good he was.
2-Now what the Rockets did was steal Luis from the Spurs, cose their GM knew that even eating Butler's contract,Scola was worthy of that.
See now?It was a FO fuckup all the way, plain and simple.
NBA teams are only scouting their own property?
It was known for at least a year before that Scola could be had for the right price. Yet, no team in the league felt he was worth a first round pick.
It was a screw-up no doubts. And the Spurs own the greatest fault in it because he was their property.
But no other team in the league saw him being this effective - and it DOES work like that.
As I recall the sticking point with the Spurs was the money. And the fact that they got rid of Butler was also about money.
There is nothing particularly sinister in a team wanting to mangage their P&L in their favor.
And who knows, if they had held Scola off for another year to the point where his contract was available without penalty, he might have resigned with Tau for spite. Or the big money contracts which the Euros now appear to have in their arsenal might have come into play.
What's done is done. The real problem is the misjudgment and mismanagemetn of the Bonner contract. If they thought he was worth the 3 year contract and a better option than Scola, they should have been developing him instead of letting him rot on the bench.
they did.
Cleveland did
Chicago did
and of course Houston did.
Now,of course no one wanted Butler's big ass in their salary cap space.
Houston did it coze they were desperate for a PF,and $3M p/yr +butler's contract is way cheaper tham another solid NBA PF.
I bet if the Spurs just wanted to trade Scola's rights for a 1st rounder and some cash, not one but many teams would've gone for it.
ATTENTION tonight 8EST on ESPN+ Luis Scola on "ESPN Studio" a one hour special!!!!
Cherry has claws.:toast
