NBA teams are only scouting their own property?
It was known for at least a year before that Scola could be had for the right price. Yet, no team in the league felt he was worth a first round pick.
It was a screw-up no doubts. And the Spurs own the greatest fault in it because he was their property.
But no other team in the league saw him being this effective - and it DOES work like that.
As I recall the sticking point with the Spurs was the money. And the fact that they got rid of Butler was also about money.
There is nothing particularly sinister in a team wanting to mangage their P&L in their favor.
And who knows, if they had held Scola off for another year to the point where his contract was available without penalty, he might have resigned with Tau for spite. Or the big money contracts which the Euros now appear to have in their arsenal might have come into play.
What's done is done. The real problem is the misjudgment and mismanagemetn of the Bonner contract. If they thought he was worth the 3 year contract and a better option than Scola, they should have been developing him instead of letting him rot on the bench.
they did.
Cleveland did
Chicago did
and of course Houston did.
Now,of course no one wanted Butler's big ass in their salary cap space.
Houston did it coze they were desperate for a PF,and $3M p/yr +butler's contract is way cheaper tham another solid NBA PF.
I bet if the Spurs just wanted to trade Scola's rights for a 1st rounder and some cash, not one but many teams would've gone for it.
ATTENTION tonight 8EST on ESPN+ Luis Scola on "ESPN Studio" a one hour special!!!!
