Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Olympics are over for injured basketball star Ginobili
22.08.08 22:14
(dpa) - Argentine basketball star Emanuel Ginobili is injured and will miss Sunday's game for Olympic bronze against Lithuania, Argentine team doctor Diego Grippo confirmed Friday.
"There is no chance that 'Manu' will recover. He will not play against Lithuania," Grippo said.
A recurring injury to his left ankle forced Ginobili to remain on the bench for most of Friday's semi-final, which saw defending champion Argentina lose to the United States, 101-81.
"Ginobili is in a lot of pain, he is very sad," Argentine coach Sergio Hernandez said.
The San Antonio Spurs shooting guard was on court for just 6 minutes and 21 seconds in the semi-final and scored 2 points before withdrawing at half-time.
Andres Nocioni may also miss the game against Lithuania.
"He has tendinitis in his left knee. We will see if he recovers," said Grippo.

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
A terrible price to pay for Ginobili.
I hope this will signify the end of his Olympic commitment. Biut knowing him, I wouldn't count on that.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
smart move,
rest up, no training camp, no preaseason, limited minutes
2009 Playoffs, MANU will be back

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
This right here is why I was 100% against him playing in this.
Parker playing in that bullshit this summer as well.
STAY THE FUCK HOME!!!!!!

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
"Manu Ginobili's left ankle injury will prevent him from playing in Argentina's bronze-medal game against Lithuania on Sunday, according to team doctor Diego Grippo.
"There is no chance that Manu will recover," Grippo said. There are no specific details on the extent of the injury, but it sounds like he re-aggravated the ankle sprain that nearly prevented him from playing in the Olympics in the first place."

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
What a mess, Damn you Manu for playing. Now he'll come into camp probably beat to shit
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
it sucks his Olympic career will end on the sidelines. In a loss no less.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
I don't know if any of us could ever understand the type of patriotism these guys have for this country. Factor that into in own competitive nature and you get a very, very risky decision. One that resulted in this outcome.
I'm torn between being mad at him versus not. Actually, I'm still mad at him for that devastatingly, stupid foul on Dirk in the 2006 WCSF versus the Mavs. Why, Manu Why? :bang

I'll double that and might i add. Maybe someone should put something in manus gatorade from now on when the Olympics begin. Its getting very old watching manu play for his country. From this point on, if i were the spurs FO, i would put a clause in foreign players contracts. You play for the Olympics, you dont play for the spurs. No more, No less. With an injured manu, the spurs are handicapped. :wow

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
if i were pop i wouldnt play manu until hes FULLY healthy. im talkin about maybe missing a month of the regular season just to make sure hes 110% ready to play
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Most people can heal from a sprained ankle within 2 months... you all act as if Manu were done for the season...
Unfortunate yes, but not the end for the Spurs.

I would pursue the same course of action if he were still injured. Problem is, the West will only become tighter this coming season (especially with the offseason work that the Clippers have done). Can Pop afford to not play a 65-80% Ginobili?

You're correct. It's not the end. The disappointment comes from the fact that his injury was unnecessary and could have been avoided. No one likes to see the players injured - especially when it's one of your lead dogs.

This sucks, poor Manu, he deserves a better ending to probably his last Olympics. :depressed

9 or 10 weeks until the regular season, I think he will be fine.
Get well soon Manu.

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
if we can get Manu for the ASB, maybe we can pull it off again like when he was hurt in 2002/2003. but we had a stronger team in 03 w/o Manu. his arrival at ASB put the solid Spurs over the top

live by the sword die by the sword....hes still heart of a champion...boys got more stones then this whole room put together....shows how much he loves his country...tell me someone in the NBA that has his heart to wanna play on the team hurt...shaq....?...LeBron?....Dwayne does so thats not true...wade wants this more then anything right now...he's playing insane....props

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Two months is not enough time to get totally right.
I just hope it's not serious.
I'm disappointed he got hurt, but I understand why he played. He really couldn't sit the Olympics out given the fact that he was selected to carry the flag of his country.
He was under tremendous pressure to play by people who could care less about Manu's employer. Manu will live in Agentina again and he simply could not bring himself to doing the conservative thing and getting completely healthy.
It sucks for the Spurs.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Manu is an Argentinian first. Why do some ppl think that an employer, especially in 'the land of the free', should dictate who can and cannot play for their national team?
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
It's bad business for a small market team with a lot of stock in overseas players to discourage their players from representing their country in the Olympics.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
I think the problem with this injury is that the Breen and Collins made it sound like that it was the same foot Manu had had problems with this past season. A sprained ankle is not a big deal, but aggravating an already injured foot can cause lingering effects that possibly could last longer than an ordinarily sprained ankle.
I think Manu did the right thing. He's playing for his country in the Olympics. I don't see how anyone should fault him for wanting to play. Good for him. I also don't see the need to feel sorry for him for possibly ending his Olympic career this way. It happens with a lot of athletes, where they end their career injured or not at the level they wish they were or losing. He has an Olympic gold medal. No need to feel bad for him. It's a rare breed that an athlete ends his career (Olympic or otherwise) at the top, winning it all. Even Michael Jordan couldn't do it when he returned to the NBA with Washington. Pro athletes want to know it's their time to hang it up. Often, they play longer than they should have.
I think it's great Manu played for his country this summer. And, I don't feel sorry for him. He went down playing hard and playing in the Olympics. No shame and no regrets.

You make it sound like Manu is now confined to a wheelchair for life lol.

Well Said Jamstone!
Though Manu cannot be on the floor physically, I bet he'll be on the bench cheering his team on......crutches and all. :)

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
As a Spurs fan, I don't blame at all Manu for playing the Olympics.
Right now, I'm really worried and want to have some news on his injury. I cross my finger that it won't be a major injury. Spurs have been lucky at avoiding big injuries lately : Duncan's scary knee and Parker's ankle injuries weren't that serious. I hope it will also be the case for Manu's injury.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
These guys play all the time in the offseasons, anyway. If it wasn't in the Olympics, it was going to be somewhere else.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
IM A BIT NERVOUSE...IS IT NOT THE SAME ANKLE WHICH GOT INJURED...manu should rest more than 2 mths..Spurs can hold on w.out him in early season
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
What worries me is how easily it was aggravated. He still had some time off before this and yet he aggravated it so easily.

Sounds like the same ankle over again.
Unless he takes some serious measures to stop playing basketball for a few months, his career might be virtually over.
And when I say a FEW months, I mean 4.

I dont know if thats possible. We cant afford to lose HCA again, noway. We will need to at least win our division. Manu's minutes will depend alot on Rogers play. Thats why the FO picked him up to play both the 1 and 2. Between Rogers and the fins, we should be fine. We will need manu many times like last season my friend, like it or not. This is why Brent aint around anymore. At least finley stayed pretty healty regardless of his play. Roger is gonna surprise many. And hot dang did we just get hit by some hard rain. Dang that grass :downspin:

Sure you would. When they sat down and wrote that contract, it was clear he was going to play for Argentina. Nobody got suckered into anything here. AFAIK, Ginobili never promised to stop playing for the Argentina NT. Nor it has been written in his contract. What part of that you don't understand?

pop thought if he was not 100% healthy he would not play
pop trusted manu to use common sence
I guess with players like manu you have to throw common sence out the window

Common sence or common sense?
And sorry, Manu playing for his country is bigger than pop, the fans and the whole spurs organization in general. It's pretty selfish to sit here and bitch about Manu taking advantage of the once in a lifetime opportunity to defend a gold medal in the olympics.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
do you think he'll be ready before the season starts? I really want a 100% manu during this season, were going to need it.
Im so sad for manu... :(

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
I don't get people thinking this injury happened BECAUSE he was playing in the Olympics. Manu had been cleared by Spurs doctors. Therefore, even if he wasn't in Beijing, he'd be SOMEWHERE playing basketball. This injury occured on a routine play. Therefore it could have just as easily happened in the practice facility. I'm not sure if doctors were wrong and he wasn't ready to go, or if it was just a fluke that he hurt the same ankle again.
Either way, you can't blame the Olympics for this happening.

Im sorry, I just don't believe that a guy shooting jumpers in a gym working out with Chip England would equal him getting hurt like this.
On top of that, had he not gone, he wouldn't have resumed workouts until probobly august or september even.

So if his ankle was fragile, then he would have just got hurt later in the summer.

tp was practicing but has not played a signal game for 2 and half months
why could manu do that
especially since he was hurt
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Manu's injury today could have just as well happened in a shooting drill or running across a parking lot or anything. He wasn't doing anything spectacular when it happened. Either his ankle is really fragile, and doctors didn't see anything wrong, or it was just a fluke.

But hes sat down for a month.
Had he gone out in workouts, felt pain again like in june, they could've shut him down and reevaluated it.
I'm sorry, I just don't believe this playing in the Olympics doesn't hurt or hinder their production. It happened last year as well with Tony Parker.

I can't stand it when people bitch at Manu for playing for Argentina. Sure he is under contract with the Spurs, but as was stated earlier and many times before today, this is bigger than the Spurs and the NBA.
Manu is the ultimate competitor and has a sense of patriotism that is unheard of in recent times. And that is why we all love the man and the controlled chaos that is his game.
I look at it this way, I wouldn't be angry with Ginobili for playing in the NBA hurt when he should be resting, so why should I get angry when he plays in something more important to him?
Who here wouldn't jump at the chance to defend their hard fought gold medal at the Olympics?

Your missing the entire point.
The olympics are exhibitions. Period.
The NBA is his JOB. His employers requested that he not participate in said exhibitions and extra curricular activities and he went and ahead and did it anyways, and you expect people that side with his employer to change their mind because "its bigger than work"
Well the meaning of July 4th is bigger than my work, but I still have to work.

Tough shit.
If my employer requests that I cancel my vacation to Cabo so I can be on call in case they need me, but they don't require it, I'm going to Cabo and I'll be back in a week. Any employer that would go as far as to require it would see me take my talents elsewhere.
You're giving the authority on the subject to his employer for no reason. Playing in the Olympics is not contractually prohibited by the Spurs, so why should Manu be obligated to make that sacrifice? Out of respect?
That's not how it works. Especially for someone with his talents. If the Spurs somehow fired Manu it's not like he wouldn't make his millions elsewhere.

I bet your vacation to Cabo would not include activities that could very possibly impact your ability to make your company successful when you get back from your vacation. Oh, I guess if you were snorkeling and a shark ate you that would keep you from working.
The spurs signed Manu to a CONTRACT through 2010. Part of that contract is the expectation that he will be able to contribute as a basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs from October to June. I know that Manu was not contractually obligated to stay away from Olympic competition, but the guy was already injured from a grueling NBA season.
In exchange for the $9-10MM he makes per year from the Spurs, Manu is under the reasonable expectatation to be available to the Spurs when the new season starts. The SAS pay A LOT of money to guarantee his availability to participate. Sure injuries happen in the offseason, but going over to China at less than 100% was a bad idea.
Most people like you and me (in Texas at least) work on an "at will" basis where you or employer can terminate the employment relationship at any time. Union employees would be a notable exception to this.
Manu's decision to play and subsequent injury compromises the Spur's expectations of his contractual obligations. In exchange for the $9-10MM, Manu is not allowed to go across the street and "take his talents elsewhere" like you can do. The contract Manu plays under is guaranteed. The Spurs will have to pay him if they decided to fire him tomorrow. The Spurs could trade him of course, but given his current physical condition, no team would offer a reasonable return of assets.
Manu's fierce determination to compete and win is his greatest asset..... and his greatest liability at times. The Spurs paid for that as well.

I agree with your post 100%, and all this just goes to show the widening gulf between the prima donna sports figures and their fans.
Most of us live in a world of constraints, choices and consequences. People like Manu do not.
Do you really think Manu gives a shit about the Spurs and us fans? He's gonna get paid no matter what. I can understand his decision to go to the Olympics, because why not? He wants and expects everything to go his way. Bum ankle or not, he's still laughing all the way to the bank. He lives in a world without consequence or responsibility.
Meanwhile back on planet earth if you or me screw up like this, we get fired.

Unfortunate yes, but not the end for the Spurs.
Dirk is da best at coming back from those...he'd probably play in 3-4 days. But then again Manu is no Dirk :elephant

Guess rockets and spurs are on the same healing train.
Man that sounded gay

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
So let me get this straight...
Prior to the game, there was a huge debate over some Americans rooting for Manu and Team Argentina over Team USA. The battle cry was "Country over Spurs!"
Manu chose his country over the Spurs.
So, it's country over Spurs only when it's the United States?
Nice dose of hypocrisy.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
What the hell do Americans care about Argentina?
and for that matter, what the hell do Argentines care about America? None. They bullied Manu into playing for them, KNOWING he was injured, KNOWING Popovich and the Spurs asked him not to play.
Americans aren't stupid, you slutty whore. We don't get stuck with YOUR dinner bills.

I'm sure you've noticed alot of posters here aren't very consistent. They only choose what they want to remember, when it's convenient.
Pride and desire is part of Manu's makeup. Seeing as he's one of the most steady human beings anyone has seen, I don't know how some of you expect him to be one way with his NT, another way with the Spurs. If you only care about what he brings to the table when it's your table, you don't deserve him.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Of COURSE we only care about America, you sloppy slut. What the F do we care about Argentina? I don't give a shit if your country wins a gold medal. In fact, if the USA is competing for THAT SAME gold medal, I want America to win and Argentina to lose.
I'm sure Argentina fans are the same way. It's called patriotism, cum guzzler.
And now, Manu NEEDS THE NBA MORE THAN THE NBA NEEDS HIM.
If Manu still played in Italy and NEVER played in the NBA, he would NEVER have been as popular. He wouldn't have been able to play in the BEST league in the world or get as many fans OR GET PAID AS MUCH MONEY.
It's MANU who doesn't deserve the Spurs and the NBA, you piece of shit. He would never have been as rich as he is now, as famous as he is now.

Back off. Spurschick has more class and has made more sense than all of your posts combined. You're the type of poster that gives the US a bad name. It wasn't about America vs Argentina. It's the hypocrisy and inconsistency she's calling out.
Manu didn't need to be bullied to play for Argentina.

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Screw the Olympics. Screw team USA. Screw team Argentina. The Olympics, an institution dedicated to promoting xenophobia, warped ideas of sportsmanship and to lining the pockets of corrupt officials.
Manu made a stupid choice. He made a stupid choice way back when he came out in that championship game and played on a bum ankle. Now he and the Spurs have to live with his bad decsions. Hopefully they don't resign him after his current contract is up. Let him go play for Bahia Blanca
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Of COURSE it's USA over Argentina.
If Manu does the same, I DON'T SUPPORT HIM. WHY? Because his country is not the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
What's so hard to understand? Americans don't give a fuck about Argentina and Argentina doesn't give a fuck about America.
-
Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
Manu has made a lot more money (and a lot more money for other foreign players) by coming to the Spurs and being a tremendous player in the NBA.
The Argentine NT helped develop Manu into being a great player. He was trying to pay them back and it didn't work out this time.

Manu is out for the game against Lithuania.
He hasn't had a MRI because his ankle is still swollen.
Spurs wanted him back now but Manu has decided to stay in Beijing to cheer for Argentina Tomorrow.
He will go back in SA on Monday.

FAIL. He had almost two months off between the Laker series and the Olympics. He also didn't do anything noticeable to the ankle, he just cut and passed the ball. I think he's out until January or February if they want him healed for the playoffs, and not crumpling to the court every month or so for no reason.

Re: Official : Ginobili "No chance" to play vs Lithuania for Bronze Medal
From the same article:
"Manu' quiere estar con sus compañeros en este encuentro tan importante. Pero no va a jugar, porque le había dado su palabra a San Antonio que, en caso de sentir dolor, no saldría a la cancha. Y lo está cumpliendo", le dijo a la agencia Télam un allegado del bahiense.
Translation:
"Manu wants to be with his teammates in this important game, but he will not play because he gave his word to San Antonio that, if he felt any pain, he would not go onto the court. He is keeping that promise," one of Manu's relatives told the Telam agency.

Thats a case of too little too late I am afraid. What a pickle Manu and the Spurs are in.

What's really difficult to understand is why you're even commenting. You're a Heat fan. What the hell do you care what happens to Manu anyway?
And thanks for calling me a slutty whore. That was so sweet.
