Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
http://www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2008.../01751268.html
"He asked me about Pablo" Manu confirmed that Coach Popovich showed interest in the PG from Cordoba.
The rumor was out there after the Olympic that Popovich have asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni, to have him as the second PG in the team.
"Yes, he asked me about Pablo, but just like he does with the other players. I don't know which one is the actual interest or if he is being pursued by the FO to hire him"
- Talking about the 08/09 season, i think that is fair to be said that you are a veteran team like last one. As it is an odd year you should win the title
"Ha!, just like last season and the other one and the one before that one. They always say we are a veteran team but if we then make it to the place we do, what else can you ask for?! I would sign right now to lose on even years if it guarantees winning on the odd ones."
- There were not as many player replacements. Could it be a similar competition as last year?
"It's true, there were not big changes. I think the West will be tough as always. Last year it was criminal already, never the less, we were just one step away from reaching the Finals"

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
And the offseason gets worse :pctoss
Prigioni would instantly become the worst player in the NBA.

that's kinda tough... he plays VERY good D and you know that is a MUST to play for Pop... i don;t think he is < Stoudamire, Van Excel or even Vaughn...

He's a horrible defender. Can get steals but that's about it.

He's much worse than Vaughn and Stoudamire. Don't know about NVE currently but if NVE weighs less than 300 pounds, I'd take him.
Against the US, the main reason Argentina got down so much is because Prigioni got destroyed in the first quarter. It wasn't until Prigioni was moved to shooting guard did Argentina start catching up.

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
That has to be a joke from Manu. If Pop wants an unproven rookie PG why not just go with Hill?

how many Turnovers did he have against D-Will and CP3?
he just needs to mesh with Oberto (second unit this year for sure) and Manu... it shouldn't be so tough since Manu keeps the ball on his hands a lot when he is the go to guy for the second unit...

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
Another TAU player ? :rollin

About a dozen.

Prigioni is horrible. I wouldn't want him 500 miles within the San Antonio city limits. I'd rather have Pepe Sanchez or pull Montecchia out of retirement.

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
prigioni looks like the kind of player pop would like.
defensive minded, takes orders, shoots when he has to, sets up the plays.....
dont do it Pop
-
Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
And I quite agree with timvp on Prigioni.
-
Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
This guy is awful. Pop must have just asked him if this was really the best Argentina had to offer now so he could start scouting some other country's players.

Prigioni was the biggest reason Tau's season ended against CSKA. He airballed about four three-pointers and got destroyed on defense by JR Holden.

well.. he actually OWNED Holden on D when ARG played RUS on the Olympics... Holden was a non factor until the game was out of reach...
but not to be misunderstood... I would prefer Darius Washington > Prigioni or even developing Hill...
the scary part about this is that Pop may have already given up on Hill... :(

No he didn't. I watched that game and Holden had like 20 points and five assists, IIRC. Plus I believe that game was meaningless for both Argentina and Russia.

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
4th stringer?
I wonder what is in Pop's mind. Are they gonna go on a hunt with some trade or what?
I think GH is an instant backup for Tony, there is Vaughn so PG position is lock up.
Spurs really need to think about swings that can slash. In todays NBA slashers gets the most of the way they are playing.
If Ian is not the answer the spurs are screwed in the froncourt. In last years playoffs TD was the froncourt esp. in the rebounding area.
Just have to wait for a season. I was all done with the NBA the whole offseason. Time to be back in NBA life a bit more, then I will be back from death.

There is no question Holden is> Prigioni overall and on different scenarios... if you saw the game you should have also seen that Holden's last 15 points wer ein the 4th quarter and before his FG% was just horrible... i wonder why...
but what other options do we have out there for second unit PG?
-
Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
He should have asked about Holden.

No need to make things up. :rolleyes

Holden had six points in the fourth quarter and was 2-for-5 in that period. The rest of the game he was 5-for-11 with 13 points.

Prigioni sucks. Hopefully, since he plays for Tau, the Spurs won't get him even if they want to.

Same as D-Will and CP3 combined since you have to add up their PT to get to Prigioni's 33 min...
and BTW Kidd had 3 TO in 16 min...
we're even now... no need to make things up :)

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
WTF is going on with the Spurs FO lately?
I'm starting to believe that a rival GM has put some weird drug in the AT&T Center coffee machine.......
Or maybe Pop and Manu had too much of a good thing

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
I wish Pop would temper his man-crush for all foreign players. He acts as though each one is the next Manu Ginobili.

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
we should add a poll to this thread to see what the common Spurstalker thinks... V-Span> Prigioni for the Spurs system? :stirpot:

From what I saw in the Olympics.. I don't want him at all.

Not even a contest, V-Span. I am still kind of hoping there was some shred of truth that the Spurs were trying to get him over.

i rarely disagree with Pop but this i totally disagree with.....

I don't like Prigione. I hope he doesn't come to San Antonio

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
Ok. Great fucking draft pick Spurs, great draft pick.
I thought Pop loved Hill? Question - Why isn't Hill signed yet? and why is Pop going after every point guard he can find????????

Pablo Agaist Rusia have 11 points, 11 asist, 3 Steals and 0 TO!!!
But honestly pablo isn't a NBA type of player he's like pepe sanchez a Fiba Style PG.
-
Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
Pop has lost his mind. George Hill step the hell up and show us you can play. Vaughn could own this guy on the court.
-
Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
Americans don't want to play in SA so crater face has to recruit over seas. Spurs will tank next season to try to get as many ping pongs as they can. Exciting times are coming again for Spur fans. Get ready!
-
Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
I find it quite funny that people bash Pop on that one. You should better read what Manu said :
"he asked me about Pablo, but just like he does with the other players"
So Pop hasn't asked more details on Prigioni than on other Argentinean players.
The logical conclusion of this article is that Spurs aren't specially interested in Prigioni.
-

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
PRigioni is a bad defender....not like pepe sanchez

I agree wholeheartedly, and almost posted something similar. Frankly, I'd be more upset with Pop if he DIDN'T ask Manu or Tony about the guys they play with. The Spurs organization using all the sources and resources they have to make sure they aren't overlooking someone who has the potential to contribute is something I support 100%.

I have to agree with this... I don't think Prigioni is THAT bad, but still, I would also pick Pepe Sanchez or retired Montecchia over him...

that means Pop have no confidence on Hill to be the no.2 PG in Spurs

That was established when the Spurs went after Pargo.

Well that establishes that the front office is turning into a joke! If they freaking NEED a point guard why not draft someone who is supposedly ready now like Chalmers?
I DO NOT understand this draft pick of Hill at all.
1. Why is Hill not signed?
2. Why are the Spurs looking at every point guard on the planet when they drafted one? I know Hill isn't really a point guard, but again why draft the guy when you NEED a back up PG?
-
Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
first off, even if Pop showed some interest, I really can't see how this could work.
he's under contract with Tau, maybe there is an escape clause, but we know about Tau's contracts. they also can't let him go, he's currently their only PG with Dragic heading to the Suns.
(Tau is in talks with Fred Jones, also not exactly a PG as we know)
aside this, Prigioni is a player none likes, not even the Argentinians.
and aside this fact, he isn't as bad as all call him. he's the type of constantly underrated player and there is enough to somehow understand why Pop is interested.
he is really a good defender (at least at Euroleague level), last season he was voted 2nd place for the Euroleague defensive player of the year (behind only Diamantidis), he doesn't turn it over much and he can hit the 3 occasionally.
but it's a bit like with JV. I guess most will agree that it would be great to have JV as the 3rd PG on the team. same with Prigioni IMO. if we would have him as the #3 PG to play some 10 MPG, we would be fine with it.

Re: Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni
I find it funny how people put on their players Pom Poms thinking that will alone will make players better. Let me be very clear. Its not about Manu, its not about George Gervin, its not about Pop. Its about the colors Black and Silver. If it takes trading away a player and making the colors Black and Silver better then do it. That means coaches as well. Im Black and Silver first. Everyone including Timmy, Tony, and Manu are tradeable. Black and Silver will be here way after Manu leaves and goes back to his country. It would be stupid if we have or had the chance to make our team better by trading Manu and not doing it because of what Manu used to be able todo.

it's "Popovich asked Manu for Pablo Prigioni" and not "Popovich asked to trade Manu for Pablo Prigioni"
