WASHINGTON — More than 73 million people watched the vice-presidential debate between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Joe Biden on Thursday night, making it the most watched vice-presidential debate in U.S. history and very likely the second-most-watched political debate of any kind.
It ranks behind only the Oct. 28, 1980, debate between President Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, which logged nearly 81 million viewers.
Nielsen Media Research said Friday that 70 million people watched the 90-minute debate across ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox broadcast network, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo, Telefutura and BBC America. PBS projects another 3.5 million watched the debate, moderated by its own Gwen Ifill, on public broadcasting stations.
Before the Biden-Palin match, the most watched vice-presidential debate was the only other one to feature a female candidate. George H.W. Bush and Geraldine Ferraro drew 56.7 million viewers on Oct. 11, 1984, Nielsen said.
The 1992 debate
After Carter-Reagan, the presidential debate that drew the most viewers was the Oct. 15, 1992, three-way among then-President Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot, Nielsen said. That logged 69.9 million viewers.
Timing may also have played a part in the big ratings. Thursday is one of the most popular nights of the week for TV-watching, while Friday, when McCain and Obama first debated, is one of the least popular.
Generally, only Super Bowls bring together so many Americans to watch the same thing.

Holeeey shit, I knew it was going to be big, bigger than the Presidential debate...I didn't know it as going to be that big.
73 million viewers...smearing the Presidential debate, shattering it. Second most watched debate in history.
Guess what? They weren't tuning in to see Biden.
Just like they didn't tune in like that to McCain V Obama.
Poll that motherfuckers.
And it's not just TV, it's her personal appearances, it's party activism, it's contributions...
She's like Elvis...
There has never been another politician like her...and there has never been another VP selection that has made the impact she has.
Fact.
It's the one thing McCain has done right in this entire campaign. And he's holding her back...
My advice, stop saying One Heartbeat away from the Presidency and start saying a loooooooooong 4 years away from the Presidency...
It'll have more impact.

How's she going to dominate the ratings? Is she going to debate for McCain? Is she going to get her own talk show? Who's going to stop Putin while she's doing this?

Do you know how hungry the media is to interview this woman?
Holding her out of interviews can be turned into a major positive.
Hint: She outdraws the broadcast news when she's on cable news.
And she's learning...
All in all...she is keeping McCain in this race, at some point he's got to step up and do something.
I'm predicting he'll come through with something...he's come back from the dead a couple of times. He proved he could do it at the RNC.

They can't pull the same shit...she countered the attempted Quaylisization and she countered it well.
W was never able to do it(in large part because he is much stupider than Quayle was)...and that should be cause for alarm.
I don't think she was was the one afraid to do interviews and I think trying to figure out if she was going to contradict McCain's stances was her biggest issue. There is no linera logic to his stances...that's always been the problem connnecting with him.
She didn't become a journalist because she was afraid of the camera though...I think she quite likes the camera...and more importantly, it likes her.

If she really is the future of the Republican Party may god save them. I really thought Republicans could go no lower than Bush but they have really outdone themselves with Palin. Kudos.

Too bad it wasn't 73 million supporters.
I know of 20 households that watched just to see if she would drool.
Plus it makes for funnier viewing when you watch the Tina Fey skit on SNL when you've seen the real skit by Sarah Palin.

LMAO. Lots of people tuned in to see if she'd get stumped again like she did in her interviews with Gibson and Couric. If you can't see the appeal in that whott, then you're in some serious denial. It's why the Lakers get such high ratings; everyone hates Kobe, and wants to see him get destroyed. Even the Jazz used to get good ratings in the late 90s, and no one was rooting for them. For some reason lots of the conservative base loves her, but look at her approval ratings before the debate and it's clear more people tuned in to see her own herself like she has in the past.

That's a very one-sided view that discounts Palin/Lakers fans just because you despise their "team."
I'm not a Lakers fan - hell, as evidenced by my lack of participation in any other part of this forum, I'm not even a basketball fan - but, I find it hard to believe that 70 million people tuned in to watch the debate just because they were hoping to see Palin fail.
And, if they did, they were disappointed.
I think it's more likely they tuned in to find out if everything they've been hearing is true and, lo and behold, it isn't.

I'm not exactly allowed to talk politics at my workplace, but my at my wife's work at least 5 people told her they wish Palin was at the top of the ticket instead of McCain following the debate on Thursday night.
Granted, all of these people are probably socially conservative Republicans and evangelical Christians (I do live in Georgia), but that just proves that her strong performance has once again solidified her position with that base.
She's not going to win over any independents or swing-voters with her lack of substance on the issues, but her performance on Thursday night went a long way to erase the doubt about her qualifications even among members of that evangelical Christian base.
She's popular and that debate performance will keep McCain in the race in places like Virginia and other Southeast states.

I think Democrats discount the Clinton factor, as well. Neither of the Clintons have come out and whole-hearted campaigned for Obama yet. In fact, they've been somewhat distant and have given mixed messages wherein they express admiration for both McCain and Palin.
It can't be ruled out that many of the 73 million might have been Hillary supporters who are still pissed off as all getout about her being snubbed from the ticket.
I also think the one thing Governor Palin pointed out, during the debates, that will resonate with many of those same people is how vehemently Joe Biden opposed his running mate during the primary campaign.
I expect some of Joe Biden's more pointed accusation against Obama will show up between now and November 4th. It'll be good entertainment...as he usually is.

73 million didn't tune in to see her fail, but it's not unreasonable that 40-45 million of those who watched tuned in to see her blow it, based on her approval ratings before the debate.

Yeah, Palin did do better than expected. The only really bad answer I remember was what she said about global warming. Paraphrasing, I live in Alaska and climate change is a big deal out here because it's in the arctic, but we should stop asking what is causing it and try to take steps to curb it.

Well, polio wasn't manmade. Nor was malaria or any number of other diseases man managed to curb.

What is man going to do on a global scale to fix global warming if it's not manmade? Nuke ourselves with everything we've got in an attempt to change the orbit or inclination of the planet? If it's not man-made, then what's the point of cutting emissions like she said in her answer? (source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3bLQSH57uM)
I also didn't like the part where she complained about us relying on countries that produce more and more of the pollution (China). If you want to stop that, it's simple; end free trade with China, a nation that does nothing for us but kill our manufacturing jobs while offering cheaply-made crap sold to us at slight discounts. Their standard of living is too low for their citizens to afford our exports anyways.

I hate to see it but the pundits put it best.
Sarah Palin did a lot of good for Sarah Palin with her debate performance. It did nothing to help McCain's campaign and change the clear shift in the electorate towards Obama.
In all likelihood Obama is going to win this election. The electorate has stopped tuning into McCain and his negative ads, you can only go on the negative so much before people stop listening. Even the people I know that don't care for Obama admit he will probably make a good President. He's calm, collected, thoughtful, and wise beyond his years. America is going to see a lot of good in the next 8 years, hopefully it will be the end of the scorched earth campaigns that pit half the electorate against one another.

Considering scientific polls of viewers showed that Biden won the debate clearly, it does not seem to be a strong point for the McCain campaign to say that a lot of people watched it because of Sarah. If indeed they were watching for her, and she still lost, it's not a good thing.

Exactly, she's a spectacle at this point. I tuned in because I was curious if she would do better than in the Couric interviews.
Bottom line on the VP debate: Biden did a masterful job of chaining McCain to Bush, even better than Obama did. Biden is a much better debater than Obama. Palin, on the other hand, went from an F in the minds of undecided voters, to maybe a D+, or at best a C-. If she hadn't used the "white flag of surrender" line, a line that offended 70% of the public that is sick and tired of this war, she might've done even better. Where the hell do you get this stupid idea from? If most people who tuned in were going to vote for her, then how come she lost the debate in every poll? Why did those people who were supposedly voting for her not see the debate through red-tinted glasses they've already seen the election through? Your arguments regarding Palin never make any sense. You're in some incredibly deep denial about what this country thinks of her. It just keeps getting more difficult day by day to take your arguments seriously.
Hey, you can sit on polls all you like...
I am going by my instinct. I don't trust the media, they are in the tank for Obama, but I do have a feeling that is about to change.

The meida is corrupt and dirty...without a doubt. They are hiding behind the first amendment but the ratings prove no one trusts them either. Foxs ratings are surgring while CNN and MSNBC's are declining...

Just in case your genius predictions don't turn out the way you want, to what will you ascribe an Obama victory in the election? The collective "idiocy" of the electorate?

I would just like to point out that the other two most watched debates were watched to that degree because of Reagan and Clinton...the two guys who won their elections.
This is exactly the same dynamic at play here.
And everyone one said Reagan was a joke too.
The Democrats have one thing going for them...McCain. I don't think it's going to be enough.

Full list of whottt's predictions just so we can go on record...
McCain will win. Landslide.
Over 300 Electoral Votes.
More votes than Bush.
Obama will get fewer than Kerry.
NY goes to McCain.
Penn goes to McCain.
NH goes to McCain.
Minn goes to McCain(it's in the 270 thread and trending).
WI goes to McCain.
To be fair...I did predict NY polling would be in play by NY...it went in play much sooner than I expected and is now out of play, but I am saying NY goes to McCain.

I'm just curious as to what you base that on. I don't think this election is over by any means, and a lot can happen in a month, but Obama is up in the national tracking poll outside of the margin of error. If the election were held today, he would almost certainly win, and by a comfortable margin.
Rasmussen nailed the 04 election better than any pollster, and he has Obama up in line with other pollsters. What is wrong with the polls, or what is going to change between now and November 4th?

I don't think the smears against Obama are going to work. Hillary dragging things out helped Obama ironically, because voters have already been exposed to the Ayers, Rezko, Wright stuff and it hasn't hurt Obama.
Obama has the highest favorable ratings of all candidates and Palin has the worst. What swing voter is going to buy her "Obama palls around with terrorists" bullshit? October historically is a month when voters make up their minds and are hard to sway if they've already made up their minds. Going completely negative - my hunch is it will be ineffective with the economic news so bad.
