Should/Could the Spurs go after Brandon Bass and Trevor Ariza?

I am not throwing in the towel. I said the Spurs would take this series in seven and I am stilll sticking to that. No because I hope I am right, but because I don't want the Spurs to be eliminated.

However, regardless of what happens, its obvious the Spurs have several needs this off-season. I hope the off-season is later than sooner. I like Bass' game and I like Ariza's game. I think the Spurs should make a run at them or one of them.

Give me your thoughts.

Well, Bass is a little under-sized...isn't he?? And Ariza, I don't know much about him. So, if you could help me a little, to know more about him, that'd be great!!

Not a bad choice on going for Trevor Ariza, but i would rather stay with gooden then go for Bass.

I'd like Ariza, but I don't see it happening.

I don't know much about the other guy but they won't get Ariza. I think Ariza intends to stay in LA given his choice and I'm sure the Lakers will try to keep him if possible.

Shit. The season isn't even over yet, and we already have all sorts of names thrown around here. I can't even think what the summer is going to be like...

I think the spurs have a better shot at Odom than Ariza.

i could see that being possibly true
the lakers love ariza and somehow i doubt they will let him go
at the same time i doubt odoms going anywhere
and i'd say dallas will re-sign bass

Ariza, Bowen, and Gist at SF makes me pretty happy. But that means we have less resources to upgrade at PF/C, as Ariza will likely command full MLE over several years with his recent performance. The Lakers may be reticent to pay out that much after signing Vujacic to a similar deal last year.

I'd love it if the Spurs went after Ariza, except for:

1. He'll likely be looking for at least an MLE deal and I fear he'd be out of the Spurs price range.

2. I cannot see any scenario by which Fakers owner, Jerry Buss, allows him to walk. I believe Buss would sooner allow Lamar Odom to walk than Ariza.

I really like Ariza, but there is absolutely no way he ends up on the Spurs. Just think about the series of events that would have to take place for it to happen.

1. Ariza must not receive an offer in excess of the MLE from a team with cap space.

2. Spurs must clear enough space under the lux tax to make a full MLE offer.

3. Spurs must be willing to spend the entire MLE on Ariza

4. Lakers must refuse to make a comparable offer.

5. Even if you get this far, Ariza would have to prefer an MLE offer from the Spurs over an MLE offer from every other NBA team that may think he is worth the MLE. If Boston, Miami, or Dallas offer the same deal, what are the chances that he chooses the Spurs?

Its like drawing to an inside straight and, even if you hit it, the other guy already has a flush.

Neither of these guys is going anywhere. Ariza and Bass have proven to be perfect fits on their teams. The Lakers and Mavs will re-up, and they won't pay a fortune either.

the only way Bass doesn't re-up with the Mavs is if a team with lots of space really wants him.

I would trade Gooden for Bass if Dallas want an even trade. Bass is shorter, but he's quicker and very strong for a small forward.

Ariza FTW

The Basshole isn't going anywhere. Neither is Ariza. You'll just continue to be old and sign Rasheed or some over the hill scrub.

For that to happen the Spurs would have to trade Manu, go several million dollars over the lux tax or have a 13 man roster that included seven minimum salary rookies. Which assumption are you working under?

I would love to see the Spurs add the type of NBA-proven you suggest, but I see no way that they go deep into lux tax to make it happen. To get a player like RJ or Maggette, keep Manu, and use the MLE would require going well over the lux tax.

I'll use the Maggette scenario since he make $5m less than RJ. Let's even assume that GS is willing to settle for KT, Bonner, and Finley in exchange for Maggette. And lets also assume that the Spurs cut Oberto and Bowen to save the 3.9M those moves would net. Finally, assume that Stern's letter to NBA teams is accurate and the lux tax line will be around around 69.4M.

So we have TD, TP, Manu, RMJ, Hill, Ian, Maggette and two players, as you suggest, for the MLE that starts at about 5.5M. You now have nine players and you are already up to 69.6M and over the tax line and you still have to add at least 4 more players.

The only way to make a scenario like that work is one where Finley declines his player option and Oberto medically retires and the NBA grants cap relief to the Spurs.

I believe the Spurs moves over the summer will be much less ambitious, although I think significant moves at the trade deadline will be more likely.

Time will tell, but I think many posters here will be frustrated by the lack of major moves.

Forget those guys and go get Dahntay Jones from the Nuggets. He should be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The Nuggets would be crazy not to pay him but they have a huge payroll. C'mon RC, show him some love.

Even if we cannot get Ariza, we at least should force LA to pay an expensive salary for him.

Remember that they tried to sign Gooden who is no use for them just to screw us?

Apples and oranges. Gooden was a one man free agent pool. LA risked nothing by taking a shot at him.

If the Spurs are serious about using the MLE, they will be smart enough to focus on a player that they can actually sign, not waste their time chasing a fantasy while other useful players are signing with other teams.

We need The Gist!

I'd rather see us go after Ariza instead of Bass.

with 3 second round picks, Ian, Gist, Hairston, Hill, Williams, Sanikidze, and maybe even Splitter......youth is right around the corner. Parker is still in his 20s as well.

Next year, we could go from one of the oldest, to a relatively young team in just 1 offseason. However, if Splitter does come, I dont see it happening until 2010.

Huh ? Have you given up on Ian Mahinmi ? I mean, I can see why but I don't think the Spurs will pursue a center. With Finley aging and Mason unable to effectively guard perimeter players, we need a defensive minded, athletic 2 guard/forward.

The spurs need young player at almost every position, including a true point guard that is willing to play back-up. The spurs had an opportunity to get Jose Calderon from Toronto. He was a free agent and probably would have like to come to a stable team. Instead they drafted George Hill. Thats great cause he is young and athletic, but then they dont play him. Thats dumb because we need atleticism. If you're not going to play him then trade him for a legit back-up Point guard, because Tony is not a pure point guard. By the way Andrea Bargnani is Free agent this coming summer. He is 7'0 and has nice 3pt range touch. 15pt / 5rbds a game this season. Oh and he is only 24.

So you'd pay a backup PG 45 mil over 5 years?
Also, Bargnani is not a FA this coming summer. Neither will the Spurs be able to afford him.

Bowen is gone after this season, role if any is going to be reduced to even lessor role but rumor around the mill is that Bowen, Vaughn, Orberto are outa here. (No Joke) FO will not reup there contracts for any extenstions and spurs players know this. KT, MF might be gone as well, but is still a wait and see. Udoka is swape for cash player at this point, so spurs have choices to make. Bringing in Malik Hairston, & ian Mahani(or however you spell it) is up in air, but if brought in consider SPURS in Full Rebuild. Forget about Splitter he is not coming to SA. Will again sign extension in overseas. So forget about that guy.

All in all Hill,Manu,Tim,TP,Gooden, Bonner are only solid players in this mess of a puzzle.

Still always have been and always will be a SPURS fan till the End. Bleed the sliver & black.

I think the Spurs will try and resign Gooden and use the rest to try and lure over Sheed or Mcdyess. Gist should also be on our roster and then try to trade Oberto, Bowen, and Bonner for a younger 3 or back up PG if Pop doesn't want to play Hill.

what can you really trade Bowen, Vaughn for!!! Not too say they suck or anything, dont they are done in their career's thats why they would not be worth anything in a trade. Other wise they would have traded them this yr. Bonner is a 6-7th best player on a bad team, cant really get much for him unless you just trade for cash consideration.

Ariza would be great, but it's basically a pipe dream. Lakers are going to re-up him at the end of the season.
