Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
whatever happen to this guy?
spurs were interested in drafting him last season if im not correct....

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Spurs were really interested to draft him in 2007. He worked out twice for SA and had a dinner with Pop.
In 07-08, he scored 51 points against the Toros.
I would keep a close eye on him.
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Would be a good low-risk investment. Although he seems a bit emo for the Spurs' tastes.
So the Jazz have no rights to him?

Jazz didn't pick up the option on his rookie contract, so not only do they have no rights to him, I think it's safe to say that they have basically no interest in him, since they didn't even want him at bargain basement prices.
Haven't seen him play recently enough to give you full details on him, but obviously the guy can score. I think he's still a work in progress, but as far as the Jazz go, he seemed to simply get lost in their swingman depth.
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
He'd be low risk but I'd rather keep an eye on Hairston instead.

Wow, didn't know he had dinner with Pop. Would be great to see him in training camp, though I think Hairston will have more to offer overall.

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Try him out and see how he plays.

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
How was his production during the time he played in the NBA?
Marcus Williams also scored a bunch in the d-league, but didn't do anythign in the NBA.

Not too great. You'd still be buying a pig in a poke, potential-wise. He's only 24, but has no more d-league send down eligibility. You'd not want to pay too much, and you'd be forced to develop him on your NBA roster.
He wouldn't be a terrible option if we get lucky and Fin retires. One good thing is that his d-league numbers jumped up sharply for his second season from .446 FG% .354 3G% to .521 FG% .407 3G%.

The increase in 3PT% is good to see, although I think that 35.4% in his first season was a bit underachieving. The overall increase in FG% I attribute to something I noticed about him in last summer's RMR.

If the Jazz let him, he's capable of contributing 10-15 good minutes this year; they are somewhat crowded at 2/3, but minutes may open up if CJ Miles is gone to OKC, as I suspect he will be after that offer sheet.
Post Script: The Jazz ended up matching the offer sheet that CJ Miles signed with the Thunder (4-years, $15 million), and Almond once again got lost in the Jazz's plethora of swingmen.

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Almond would be a solid investment to up around the LLE. I don't think he's worth more than that, though. When I've seen him play, his perimeter defense has looked extremely shaky and he's one of the worst ball-handlers in the league. He turned the ball over a lot at Rice and he continues to turn the ball over a lot. I've also read about him complaining about playing time and clashing with Sloan. That doesn't bode well for him in San Antonio.
That said, LLE or lower I'd roll the dice on his scoring ability. He seems to have a natural ability to score the ball and is pretty fearless. Compared to MWilliams and Hairston, there's no question Almond has the highest ceiling when it comes to the offensive end of the court.

Morris Almond will meet with San Antonio early next week before heading to Las Vegas to play for New York's summer-league team. Almond visited with the Spurs twice before the 2007 draft, when the Jazz made him their first-round pick.

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Nice :tu
Not sure exactly how he fits but if it just takes a guaranteed minimum deal to get him on the team, I'd probably do it.
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Interesting.
I would think this affects Mason moreso than Finley right?
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
I don't think it affects either of them.
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Well, they could only want him to fight for a roster spot with McClinton.

Yeah if it affects anyone, it'd be the ones trying to make it at the end of the roster ... like Hairston, Williams and McClinton.
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
I think it's a good idea to try him out. He can definitely score.

Would they really be meeting just to offer him a camp invite?
I see no room for him on this team. And I believe someone already pointed out he can't be sent down to the d-league?

Am I the only one who find it quite strange that Spurs haven't said a single word about Finley after he picked his option ?

Maybe they are trying to buy him out for $1.2M :stirpot:

I'm not sure anyone's asked, either...
It's almost like the press was just as enthusiastic as some of the people on this board, when learning of his decision. Like they just wanted to pretend it never happened.:lol

To me, his house on the market says more about him NOT being here next year than him picking up his option says about him being here. I'm guessing he was probably told that he wasn't in the plans and that he would be traded if he opted in, hence the house for sale.

If that's the case then I would assume it's a prearranged deal. I can't believe he'd pick his option up if he thought he was being traded to Memphis or somewhere like that.

Well, there was an article about him picking his options with quotes of his agent. I guess the journalist also called RC. There wasn't the traditional "we're happy to have him back" quote.
Maybe I'm trying to much to read between the lines but this lack of reaction from Spurs quite surprised me.

He did it to get paid.

Why would you assume there is a pre-arranged deal if they told him he wasn't in the plans? You opt in, you take your chances as to where you go.

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
When the Spurs do make a statement about Finley, I'm sure it will go something like this :
Quote:
We're happy to welcome back our starting two-guard for next season, Michael Finley!
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
I just don't believe Finley cares about $2.5 million enough to stay with the Spurs if they told him they would trade him. Even if they didn't say one way or the other his agent surely told him how things might be. Hell, even he could see what moves were being made and the team's move forward.
Again, I just don't think $2.5 million means anything to him at this stage of his career.
-

Actually, the conversation probably went like this:
Pop: Mike, you're really not in our plans for next year.
Fin: I'm opting in.
Pop: You might want to start packing...

Explain, then, why he puts his house on the market first, then opts in.
edit: Ah, just had a theory...maybe he doesn't want to play for the $2.5M, but is just fishing for a buyout? Do nothing for $1.25M?

You might very well be on to something, it is unusual that they wouldn't at least acknowledge it (publicly or in print), but I guess it could have just as easily got lost in the shuffle.
It's been quite the active month between the Jefferson acquisition and draft, so maybe the lack of questions in the presser's on the subject, is just as likely the reporters focused more on Jefferson, the draft, and free-agency.
It would be nice if something was in the works, though...

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Expiring contracts are worthwhile. The Spurs have a few. There's no sense in going apeshit during the 1st intermission of the offseason.
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Isn't it possible the Spurs talked about a trade with him before he picked his option up? Or is that against the rules?
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
It's not against the rules to talk to your own player.
-
Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
I wouldn't mind us giving a minimum contract to Almond; I like his upside and he's never really gotten a chance to play at this level. However, there are two things I would be concerned about:
-From what I've seen and heard, McClinton has a lot of potential; I don't want to put a damper on that by crowding him out.
-Almond can't go back to the D-League, so if he's on your roster and on the IR, he's just sitting on the bench. In many ways, it might be better to take a flier on a more unknown guy who was undrafted, just to get a chance to see him play more.

Knicks Sign Almond For Summer League
Jul 03, 2009 8:27 AM EST
The Knicks have signed guard Morris Almond to play on their Summer League team.
According to a team source, New York plans to sign Almond for next season assuming he performs well this summer.
"We're looking for shooting," Knicks president Donnie Walsh told The Post. "We acquired some of it in the draft (Jordan Hill, Toney Douglas), but he's someone you have to look at."

That was a good "get" for them, and a good fit for Mo. He was going to struggle here because his defense sucks. Three First Names doesn't GAF about defense.

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
He's just playing on the Knicks' SL team. Spurs could still end up with him.

I didn't think so.
Isn't it possible Finley put his house up for sale and had plans not to pick his option up when the Spurs called and ask what if we trade you to a team of your choice? It could be a win-win situation for both sides assuming something could get done. Finley waits for the last minute to pick his option up to see if the Spurs have something in place. Not sure why it wouldn't be done yet but it's possible.
Almond might not have thing to do with it and maybe the Spurs look for someone else but it might explain why he picked his option up after putting his house on the market.

That's what I have been reading from Jazz fans. Almond seemed lost in the Jazz system. I wonder if that is a sign of low basketball IQ.

It was a bad envirement for Almond in Utah. I don't think he would do well here either. He needs a team like Golden State or New York.

Re: Free Agent: Morris Almond
Sounds like Almond will end up with the Knicks. The Spurs would probably have to give him a contract prior to summer league to get him.

There's zero contractual obligation for a player to sign with the team that they played summer ball with, but many do because they already know the coaches and such, and feel a sense of loyalty to them since they gave them a chance. Also, most of these guys get the same offer to them from a few different teams (minimum salary), so they may be more likely to go with the system they are already somewhat familiar with.
As for Anthony Morrow, yes the Warriors scooped him up pretty quickly, and for good reason; he was pretty impressive in summer league. It's possible that a few other teams made him offers, but probably not with any extra guaranteed money than the Warriors gave him.
