Re: somebody better close the damn border.
The economic implications of closing the borders are far too great. Goods wouldn't be delivered and it would cost billions of billions of dollars, even if it were just for a short period of time.
It'd be disastrous for "Main Street America"

Re: somebody better close the damn border.
Didn't you hear Obama the dumb fuck speak tonight. He said the damage is done. No closing the borders. Cows have already left the barn. Hahahahaha.
That was funny. As if noone with swine flu will cross the border now.

Re: somebody better close the damn border.
My friends sister was just on a cruise that stopped in Cancun all last week. The day after they left a couple people died in the area. She also had weird skin lesions that formed just a couple days ago.
The vast majority of the outbreaks are probably going to be because of people returning from vacation, but of course people will find a way to blame it on migrants or whatever. Are some cases going to be because of migrants or illegals? probably. Is it going to be the cause of the vast majority of the cases? No.
The ends don't justify the means in this case. Closing the border does nothing... it's not like there's a magical barrier that keeps pathogens from crossing over. It's a fucking virus. This things coming no matter what we do. It's gonna come from Europe, from Mexico, from everywhere. A Xenophobes wet dream.

Who was talking about illegal aliens?
I was talking about shutting it down for all crossings -- legal and otherwise -- both ways.

Why is that funny? The swine flu is already in the US.

So you are saying no American should be allowed in any other country now.

Most of the people I've heard on talk radio have been blaming it on Illegals/Legal migrants.
On Glenn Beck this morning a lady called in from Ohio saying that some people at a nearby school got sick and that there's a large farming community 30 minutes away which has a lot of Mexicans and that something needed to be done about them.

Closing the border does to do something. It helps prevent the swine from spreading. Texas high schools are not doing sports for 2 weeks to help prevent from spreading. My wife called and said they are closing some schools to help prevent from spreading. The Mexican professional soccer leagues will not have fans watch the games to help prevent from spreading. Closing the border will help.

So since the flu is here now, every other country in the world should cut off the United States from all travel and trade.
Good thinking. :tu

Re: somebody better close the damn border.
It's a virus. In a world with force fields it would work. If it was transmitted through blood... then maybe I'd be down with shutting it down for a little bit in order to get procedures in place to properly screen incoming visitors.
Let's say we do shut down the borders... ok good... problem slowed... at least in your heads. The fact is is that it's an airborne virus. People on the borders are gonna get it no matter what we do. Once they get it do we quarantine El Paso, San Diego, Laredo?

Hey, I was just calling you on your idiotic "xenophobia" baiting nonsense.
But, yeah, Mexico City has all buy quarantined itself. Why not take some measures to slow or abate the spread?

So far the board reactionary plan calls for the complaete quarantine and isolation of New York, Texas, California, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Arizona, Indiana, Nevada, Maine and Ohio.

I was baiting nobody. If you're a strict isolationist, this is just what you need to prove your point. I'm not insinuating that anyone here is a xenophobe... I was just stating what it was.
Was my statement false? Would a xenophobe not look at this as a way to keep ALL foreigners out? I don't particularly like people from Dallas... you could call me a xenophobe of sorts.

Would a rational person not want to stem the flow of infected people -- regardless of their race or nationality?
Mexico City isn't going about business as normal why should we?
If one of the spillway gates on an eight-gate dam sticks halfway open, you don't throw your hands up and say, "ah, what the hell, throw the other seven open while we're at it."

Yup, unless you are Obama. "Cows are already out of the barn". Fucking classic!

Yeah you are baitng pretty transparent.
the Mexican goverment itself is cancelling public markets, schools and public
gatherings, trying to isolate the disease and keep it from spreading in mexico, yet if we attempt to do it we are called xebephobes and racists.. of course if you didn't vote for obama your a racist, if you went to a tea party your a racist, if you support sustainable population goals your a racist, and if you put cream in your coffee this morning it's a pretty good bet your a....what.......... a............RACIST.

Well if your medical advice is as far seeing as your international trade analysis I think the average American can afford to ignore it.

Re: somebody better close the damn border.
micca's quarantining the streets!

Re: somebody better close the damn border.
Obama is not going to close the border because he will say "America doesn't do that" or "we're better than that". Besides, America will be racist if it closes the border even if it saves millions of lives. Not being called a racist is far more important to Obama than saving lives.
-
Re: somebody better close the damn border.
To bad Obama didn't do the wait and see approach with the trillion dollars he spent but he did have people to pay for his presidency.
-
Re: somebody better close the damn border.
So you want to completely stop around $750,000,000 worth of trade per day (I came down a bit from 2005 numbers) between the US and Mexico to stop a disease that is already confirmed to be in 12 US states from Maine to California.
During a deep recession.
That's fantastic.

As much as it pains me to say it, Obama is right. It takes around 4 days from the time of infection until the person shows any symptoms. They are fully contagious during the incubation period. So if this strain is capable of infecting people as easily as human strains then yeah the cows have already left the barn.
As one expert I heard put it, if by mid next week there are 500 cases reported (he was talking about New York) then it is out of control and you can expect widespread infections.
Politicizing a virus...classic :lol.
