Gortat is a joke. He is worse than Erika Dampier. Davis will be an offensive banger in the post, while Dejuan Blair will be a defensive banger beast. Marcus Haislip and Ian will be athletic big men who can block shots and bring athleticism to to the offense and defense. And everyone is forgetting about someone I like to call Timmy D. Everyone knows what he brings to the table. Add that to Parker/Hill/McClinton at Pg, Manu/Mason/Finley at Sg, and Richard Jefferson/Marcus Williams or Malik Hairston or James Gist and the spurs have the perfect combination of stars and role players. Thats not even counting bonner who has become a trade asset.
C-TIM=Stud/Ian=athletic/Marcus=athletic
PF-Blair=Beast Banger Defender(BBD)/Davis (BBO)/ Bonner=shooter
SF-Jefferson=Athleticism & Defender/Marcus Williams=Point Foward, or Gist=athletic shooter defender, or Hairston=Banger SF, or Finley=veteran shooter
SG-Manu=the man/ Mason=deadly shooter
PG-Parker=Speed/Hill=Shut down Lock-down defender/McClinton=deadly shooter
Bonner, Finley, and Mason provide valuable expiring contract trade assets.
One of Williams, Gist, or Hairston won't make the team.
You can either put Finley/Bonner on IR or have the young guys on roster going from SA to Austin.
I'm excited for this next season. GO SPURS GO!!!!!
:tu
Not to mention that between Bonner, Finley, Williams, and Mason could return a player with a $11 million salary in a trade, IIRC. I don't necessarily expect them to do that, but obviously they can use some combination of the expiring contracts they have (along with Williams' nonguaranteed contract) to add someone else. They just landed Jefferson for what, exactly?
If the Spurs decide to start the season surrounding Duncan with a rotation of bigs then it would make sense to spend 2 mil on a 10-15 mpg role player to share minutes with Blair, Bonner, Haislip, Mahinmi, and Gist rather than tying up 30 mil on a back up player. Williams had very good numbers per 48minutes in rebounding, steals, and blocks for both Minnesota and Sacramento, and his oncourt/offcourt numbers (you can find them on 82games.com) are very good. He's not a star by any stretch, but he's young, he likes to play D, and he'd be a good role player. It's doubtful that Davis or Gortat would have started ahead of Love or Gomes either.
Gortat is going to be a bust...Big Baby won a ring and contributed way more this past season than Gortat did.
Jackie Butler has a ring, and almost matched BB's DNP-CDs in a finals.
Bring back the coat-stealer !
I heard he has soft hands and a Moses Malone-type game.
Gortat will be good for a 8/6/1 type line, and a 1st/2nd round outing for the Mavs as always. If you are happy to spend your MLE on that, go right ahead.
The Spurs just uncharacteristically broke the bank on Richard Jefferson @ 15 mil a year... that's a lot of money. Look at what the Spurs have done in the recent past regarding Bigs: Nazr, Elson, Oberto, Kurt Thomas.... If I'm wrong I'll be glad, but I just don't see them spending the full MLE for 5 years. They already surprised us with Haislip, and they'll probably surprise us again with another lesser known name guy with untapped or under-appreciated potential... under the radar moves, just like Hill and Mason last year. The Spurs have a big 4 now... they don't need a stat sheet stuffer, they need a smart role player.
Gortat is trash!!
Gortat will end up in jail a couple of times for speeding on I35... :lmao
This shit is hilarious. If the roles were reversed, we'd be reading how the Mavs were pissing money away on Davis while the Spurs got the White David Robinson in Gortat.
In your own head. I haven't seen that anywhere.
The Magic are likely to give Rakovic a shot in the same position. They're not likely to match that number because they don't want to give that much and that many years for what will be their backup center. Add the consequence of the luxury tax and it doesn't make sense for the Magic. Of course, though, this is the same team that just essentially blew up their Finals roster for no reason.
Is MLE count to luxury tax?
No one is worth MLE. Big Baby is terrible... He is not worth big men spot...
Either for the full MLE is overpaying....but I would pay Gortat the MLE before Davis every day of the week. At least he can rebound and defend.
:lol if Big baby ends up signing and being clutch for us.. many of you guys will be eating LOTS of black crow for a while... I'll personally give you shit throughout the season :danceclub:
I think either of them for the MLE is reaching, but you have to pay for big bodies I guess.
Honestly, if forced to choose between either, I wouldn't really know who to pick. Depends on the situation I guess, the Spurs need a tall, rebounding, shot altering guy who doesn't have a big appetite for points. I would actually choose Gortat, but I do think at the moment Davis is a better player at the moment.
It's kind of like trying to pick the lesser evil.
Big Baby will probably be overpaid if given the MLE. But at least you know what you are getting in return. And there is still a lot of upside with Big Baby -- you might actually get a good ROI on him in the long run. Gortat, however, is a wildcard. He is nearly impossible to valuate. Is he worth the MLE? Evidence suggests otherwise. But we all know that desperate teams overpay for "potential".
Heck, Dallas overpays for everything. They are going to give a 36 year old PG $8M a season. Why would they overpay for Kidd when they let Nash go on the cheap? That's Cuban for you -- the guy hasn't a clue. But I digress.
Its not even close in my mind. If the Spurs might overpay slightly for Big Baby, but at least they would know what they are getting. You may not be excited about him but Big Baby is a proven commodity. Anyone who gives Gortat more than $3 Million a year is gambling against very poor odds. Between the two, Big Baby is a much safer bet.
Neither
both don't deserve it and are overrated bigmen
