I'd say '87 and '97 were better ......... but this has to be top five.
Tony/Hill
Manu/Mason/Jack
RJ/Hairston/Finley
McDyess/Blair/Bonner
Duncan/Mahinmi
Final roster?
Edit: I just realized I've 13 players in there who gets out of the 12 men roster?
resigning david robinson and duncan, manu and tp were important offseasons to
I'd also put the summer we fended off Orlando for TD ahead of this one, but that about covers it (in addition to LJ's already mentioned).
There is currently one spot left on a full 15 man squad.
If Gist makes the team he will be in street clothes.
this is up there with the best no question
The only reason I would put a healthy Mahinmi over Blair is 4-5" height difference. However, Blair, Haislip and Mahinmi will have to earn their spots.
Too much talent. Nice problem to have.
I see it like this
C - Mahimni, Bonner, Haislip
PF - Duncan, McDyess, Blair
SF - Jefferson, Finley, Gist
SG - Mason, Manu, Hairston
PG - Parker, Hill, McClinton
This roster kicks the collective asses of last year's roster immensely. Unfortunately, this pretty much means that there will be no Bruce Bowen for one last season. Of course, I have no issues sending Finley to Milwaukee for Bruce (when he is eligible to be traded). I have no loyalty towards Finley.....but I have total fan loyalty to Bruce. For what he has meant for this team and city, I want him back for one final year, then he can retire a Spur and maybe move into an assistant coaching or public relations position with the team. Hell, maybe he could join Sean and Bill Land and be part of the announce team.
I would have to put 2000 summer right after 87 and 97... if Duncan leaves in 2000 to Orlando we might be in New Orleans or some other city right now. Outside of straight draft and retaining our own players, this is without a doubt the best offseason ever
Not ever.... but pretty darn close....
Jack is not proven. He surely cannot make the roster this year, maybe he will end up in Toros for a year or two. If Bonner/Finely/Mason are traded there will be more room.
Barring any S&Ts, the pieces are all in place. Now all we need is for everyone to stay healthy and get to know their new teammates and start learning how they fit into the Spurs system.. summer league and training camp will be watched with great interest and I look for all the youngsters to go all out for a roster slot. Its a good thing Pop has mellowed in his old age.. imagine if he had this many new faces back in the day when he had a really short fuze..:lol
If we're referring to non rookie players coming to SA this has to be the best for the Spurs.
Jefferson
Dice
Haislip
I thought that we were trying to develope Gist as a 3 or 4 when we go small.
Damn gospursgojas! You're stupid! How could you forget the signing of DROB and TD? ...I hope a midget kills you in your sleep!
Best offseasons ever were after championships:) This one sure doesn't look bad though.
I'll miss #12
87 and 97 were great because the spurs landed DRob and Tim, but they were easy choices, nothing very difficult for the FO to pick them then.
You could put the draft of manu and tony above because they are better than RJ or Dice.
but this year we had to do a lot with a roster already loaded with three stars and without any high draft pick. and we landed RJ, Dice and Blair.
much more harder and unexpected than to pick Duncan with the first draft choice.
Yea rob and td were obvious picks. This is by far the most original/dynamic/interesting/irregular off-season I've seen. Now if only we could trade for Sjax! lol, pipe dreams.
Drafting Drob and Duncan were great, but this offseason... did we really expect anything to happen? I figured we would MLE some okay guy and go in praying for health, just like summers before. I was completely blindsided by everything that has transpired. Plus I figured the draft would be a throw-away. Get the best talent available but don't count on a contributor from the second round.
The most I expected after we lost was Finley not picking up his option! This off-season competes for the best in terms of sheer unpredictability imo. If anyone suggested the Jefferson trade or the Blair pick it would of been flamed to death as pipe-dreams, just like the espn trade machine things that get spammed here. :lol
I'm excited :king
^ that "-Hairston had a great year in the D-league last year. The Spurs will keep an eye on how he's developing."
No question it is at least the 3rd best...
It will also depend on how the sophs and Haislip turn out being in terms of contribution to the team... AND if their additions bring a ship to SAT...
If somehow Bowen could replace Finley, I would claim this to be the best off-season ever.
i have a trade idea:
Matt Bonner, Roger Mason and the rights for Splitter for Shane Battier.
i think Houston will agree, they in kind of rebuilding mode after Ming injury and they just sign Ariza on Battier position and they love to pick rights of bigs from Europe so i thing they will agree to send the 2 years contract of Battier.
