What I'm trying to say is that: at equal amount of money the most probable scenario will be Odom picking LA.

I thought this thread would have been a crap for Durant thread
i kinda wish it was then my brain wouldn't be hurting as much
I think what he's saying is that the Lakers are waiting for him to get another offer on the open market, and then they'll match dollars. Odom's not restricted, but coming off the championship, all other things like money being equal, he'd go back to LA.
Y'Know, I'd just be fucking happy if Presti decided to opt out of the remaining FA market this summer, take our junk contracts with their cap room and send us nothing but a big fat trade exception. They can try again next summer.
Your idea is impossible on a number of different levels. Still, it forced me to take a peek at Oklahoma´s payroll, and found myself amazed at their possibilities:
So in essence, they´ve got 4 great prospects (Westbrook, Harden, Durant and Green) with one of those being franchise calibre, all of which are really young yet not too raw, athletic, intelligent, team oriented and well adjusted individuals, without serious injury concerns and low bust potential, and unlike other rebuilding teams of recent (Hawks, Blazers, Bulls) that stockpiled talent thus creating logjams at a certain position, they actually make sense together. Plus they also have a few interesting players around them in Krstic and Sefolosha that they could use in the future.
But in addition to it and what impresses me the most, they also have tremendous cap flexibility without any long term ties other than rookie scale deals or a couple other cheap contracts that don´t run for more than two years. So in light of their projected 20 to 30 million available for use in one of the deepest FA classes to memory in 2010 (enough to pursue a franchise calibre player plus enough help around), and provided they win something like 35-40 games this season and thus position themselves as a reality in the near future, they should be in good position to persuade a franchise calibre player to join them. That, coupled with the projected growth of their young nucleus, should make them contenders a year or two after that. And for God knows how long.
Don´t get me wrong, it´s not like I just found out today their draft picks and roster and had an epiphany, but when you look not every isolated move but the whole picture, damn it hits you what a masterful job Presti has done so far. And yes, I realize that not everything may pan out, but still you just about can´t picture a better situation for a franchise than the one they are looking at. I´ve got to admit, I can´t help but to feel a bit envious and bitter that we lost him.
This would be awesome. All things equal, there's no question Odom re-signs with LA.
Thing is, as of now... LA is only offering Odom 1 year. He wants a multi-year deal. He's not gonna ge that $10+mil he wants, he's gotta know that by now. So question is, does he want to take a 1 year deal and go for another contract next year (when there's gonna be even more high profile FA's, and less money to go around)... or does he want to take a multi-year deal at 7-8 million now and give himself some guarantee?
Signing somebody for the LLE and includng them in the deal would actually get Odom almost exactly what he's asking for, but I think it would still have a good chance of happening even if you didn't do that.
I think this deal is alot more possible than most are realizing. It's just not probable. Mainly for the reason that nobody has probably even thought of this.
Thank you Capt. Obvious... It wouldn't be a S&T... We'd have to wait 3 months or until December 15th, I believe... Big deal
I would have said "Good, they revisited that deal with Milwaukee that almost went through at the trade deadline". I think they would have pulled the trigger then if it wouldn't have left us so short of big men for the playoff run. You can't reload as easily during the season like SA is doing now.
McDyess shouldn't be THAT much of a surprise. He was one of those older second tier FAs, we had the money and he was a good fit.
The Odom scenario is unrealistic. But it would cap a great summer if Sam Presti helped us out with some of that young talent he has. Fight fire with fire.
A free agent signed by a new team cannot be traded until December 15th or 3 months after signing, whichever is later.
Aka, its not just unrealistic, it's impossible.
Here's the sign-and-trade rule:
Sign and trades MUST involve the prior team, aka the Lakers, and it's not likely they'll do that with Odom.Quote:

The point was, there would be no binding agreement, so if someone offered the Thunder a better deal come December, or they were in the playoff hunt, it wouldn't go through. Or maybe the Spurs lose interest and OKC is stuck with Odom when they don't want him.
OKC is not going to agree to it. If they sign Odom, it's because they want Odom. Why would they risk being stuck with a multi-year, large contract with Odom, when the proposed deal is for expiring contracts to give them back cap space they already have without spending it?
Also, considering they'll have to cut someone to accept a multiple for 1 trade for people they likely have no interest in...
The one thing you have to remember about the Thunder's talent is that that talent will cost money to keep once the rookie contracts expire. Unless the Thunder is going to take a Florida Marlins route, they're going to need all the cap room they can get.
Plus, Clay Bennett lost a boatload of money in this economy, so I don't think he's willing to take on extra salary any time soon, at least, not until he has to.
For that reason alone, I don't see it happening.
Thanks, and youre right, it is really really unlikely but I just thought it was interesting and seeing how Sam Presti is a San Antonio guy and they are one of only a few teams with money I was thinking of ways to exploit it! thanks for backing me for what was just a thought!
Who cares is OKC were to back out on the deal once they got him and played well... at least Odom wouldn't be a Laker.
and this deal helps them clear even more cap space, not lose it.
