Yup, kid is going to be a monster for us. Like Malik in his early years, he's incredibly tenacious, never gives up. I think he'll be a good defender against big centres just like Malik was, too.
All we need from him is energy, rebounds and tough D, and he's got those attributes in spades.
My only concern is that he'll be called for phantom "rookie fouls" like all rooks. Why the fuck don't the officials call the game exactly the same regardless of who the player is??? The bullshit officiating (charge/block call, rookie fouls, superstar treatment, moving screens, etc.) is the most frustrating element of the modern NBA. :pctoss

man there are some haters here. some ppl don't live on this board and miss things. good post viva, i didn't see the other thread so i'm glad you posted it. as far as blair goes, he kinda reminds me a little of Larry Johnson, Elton Brand and....Malik Rose. I don't think he has the offense of any of those guys, but he does have some junk and a nice little jumper. He can certainly develop some offense later on down the line. I think this guy is a lock for 20 minutes a game. He's just a solid, solid basketball player.

If only Blair was 3 inches taller, he would have been a top 3 pick and probably an All-Star within a couple of years. I like his game better than Blake Griffin's. He's a beastly player, it's a real shame that he's only 6'8" and he looks more like 6'6.
Still, he'll definitely help the Spurs this year and it was a great draft pick.

actually I think the low amount of offensive boards is somewhat by design. Its to allow the team to start getting back on defense so they can prevent a fast break and to get the defense set on the other end of the court before the other team can run a play.
But yeah, it would be nice if he does grab a few offensive boards.

you do realize that "the big boys in the NBA" were all rookies once, right? It's not as if Blair is the only guy who's ever come out of college before and it'll be an unprecedented event and nobody knows if he can make the switch. It's been done before. Also, is everyone in the NBA over 6'8" 265 with a 7'2" wingspan? If they all are, then you're right he's "woefully undersized". I will save your quote, nice job.

When you've got a 7'3 wingspan, I think it's pretty irrelevent whether you are 6'8 or 6'11. In fact, the 6'8 guy has a lower centre of gravity and should find it easier to hold position in the post.
I think he dropped in the draft due to the lack of ACLs, which everyone was uncertain about, not his height. Risk management and "due diligence" sent every team but the Spurs running the other way! :lol

Ever watch Malik Rose, who was 6'6, stop Shaq back in the day? Rose frustrated the crap out of big centres because he used his stregnth and low centre of gravity to keep them out of their favourite areas, and his long arms to dispute the ball. Blair will do the same. See what he did to Habeet, both times they played last season? That was just a taste.

His standing reach is 8'10.5", which is more than Blake Griffin's, who is 6'10" (8'9" standing reach).
I think the thing a lot of people miss when touting Blair's wingspan though is the fact that he can't jump as high as many (most?) of the tall forwards he might be asked to defend. So even though his wingspan makes up for the height deficiency, athletic forwards might still have the ability to shoot over him. Fortunately he's a bull and guys will have a tough time gaining good position against him anywhere near the basket.

The problem for the Spurs is YOUR WINDOW IS NEXT SEASON.
You don't have time to wait for rookies to develop.
That's the sad reality, you don't need draft picks right now. You need proven talent that can get it done in the playoffs. If I were the Spurs I'd unload Ginobili for Camby or another proven big.

Respectively your not very astute to hold this view with Parker becoming the leader of the team in scoring and Manu and Duncan the only remaining middle career pieces - Duncan and Manu cannot be damm good for 3-4 more years.
Lakers cannot beat this reconstructed Spurs team period and when Jackson packs it in they will deconstruct with all the egos on that team.

Those long arms and that low stance are going to turn into a lot of steals and balls tapped away when guys try to back him down, dribbling. Already saw that in the snippet of the practice the other day. Unless Bynum develops something of a mid-range game Blair should stop him in his tracks, neutralizes his rebounding too..

Yup. And sometimes I think it can be better to be 6'8 or 6'9 with a 7'2 wing span than it is to simply be 7'0 with a 7'2 wing span. Those guys with the freakeshly long arms just have a way of taking people by surprise.
It's easier to track and anticipate where the hands of a 7'0 guy are going to be than it is to track the fingers of a guy who is all arms and stretches out to 7'0+ with the wing span.

No, our window is two seasons. Take a look at our contracts.

My guess is Pop gives time to his frontcourt youngsters over the first half of the season, and if it's not working he'll send out expirings (we still have 6mil in Bonley) for a veterean big to plug the hole. That makes a lot more sense than bringing another vet in now and stiffling any chance of finding out whether our youth is any good.
