Dice started 30 games last year, and had a double-double in 13 of them. If he had started all 82 games, that translates to 36 double-doubles.
Looking at the NBA stats last year, not many players get double-doubles at that rate:
http://www.nba.com/statistics/player...xp=-1&splitDD=
Players with 36 or more double-doubles:
1 David Lee 65
2 Dwight Howard 63
3 Chris Paul 50 (guard)
4 Tim Duncan 49
4 Troy Murphy 49
6 Deron Williams 44 (guard)
7 Chris Bosh 42
8 Emeka Okafor 39
9 Antawn Jamison 38
9 Ming Yao 38
11 Pau Gasol 37
No one else had more than 30.
Dice had 16 total double-doubles, good enough for 42nd in the NBA, even though he missed a month because of the trade, and did not start at the beginning of the season.
Finding a second big man who can get you double-doubles on a consistent rate is not easy. Dice may not start, Bonner may. But Dice will be the best scoring/rebounding combo big man Duncan has had since DRob left.
It should be noted that Dice's stats are actually getting better the past few years, unlike Sheed who is dropping like a rock.
You can bet the Spurs wanted Dice over Sheed.
