Who's the Best Power Forward?
Even though this a Charley Rosen commentary - I know how many of you feel about him - he gets it right. And he put Malone at 4th when most place him at 2nd!
Nice comparison of the two.

Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Duncan #1 for sure than Malone. Comes down to how much Bling Bling your wearing and Timmy might be on his 5th this year.
GO SPURS GO! :flag:

Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Duncan is certainly #1, but McHale and Pettit better than Malone? Ummmm....No. Malone would have eaten McHale for lunch and spit him out by the 2nd quarter. Thats like saying Robert Parish is better than Shaq. Shaq would have crushed Parrish by the halftime and Parrish wouldnt have come back in the game. Just because they are big and physical...bruising type players doesnt make them any less of a player. Actually it makes them more dominant. This writer sounds like he is condemning Malone for being big and imposing. Just take a look at what LeBron is doing. He is a Malone type player with SF heighth.

I also would not have shayes and rodman over barkely........

Probably talking about himself in this assessment.
Rodman over Barkley? Rodman over Garnett, Nowitzki and Hayes?

+1
Rodman was a great niche player who happened to play the PF position, but anyone thinking that Dennis Rodman is one of the 10 best PF's to ever play the game is on crack.

And he is in love with McHale ...
Probably I would rank malone as second or third right behind Pettit

Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
why do people even ask this question anymore........TD #1 and that is that.
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Horrible list..
Malone is better than McHale and Pettit..KG is better than any of the guys he listed, and so is Barkley..I'd also put Dirk ahead of any of them outside of Pettit..
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
There's a poll with the article. At the moment Duncan is ahead of Malone, 65% to 35% with 2,542 votes in.

Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
really? aren't there about a billion threads on this subject already?
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
1. Tim Duncan
2. Kevin Garnett
3. Karl Malone
4. Charles Barkley
5. Bob Pettit
6. Dirk Nowitzki
Reason why Garnett is above Malone and Barkley, its about the rings.

So basically your premise is that KG is better player than Malone because Malone's Jazz couldn't beat MJ's bulls?
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
So what if Rosen puts Duncan #1. It doesn't make him a good writer. It just means he's a old Phil Jackson-worshipping hack stuck in the 1960's who is right maybe 30% of the time.

I dont agree that Garnett > Malone, but Malone couldnt lead his team to the Finals in 15 of his 17 seasons with the Jazz, which had nothing to do with Jordan.

KG didn't lead the Celtics to a championship... That was Pierce and Allen. Don't arbitrarily throw out KG's career with the Timberwolves as a measure of where he stands as a player.
Malone led his team to several Conference Finals and 2 NBA Finals... he just happened to run into the GOAT. And I don't even like the guy...
1. Tim Duncan
2. Karl Malone
3. Charles Barkley
4. Kevin Mchale
5. Bob Petit
6. Kevin Garnett
7. Dirk Nowitzki
Slots 1-4 I'm 95% are in the proper order if you ask most knowledgeable fans (though it's still a pretty subjective assessment)...
Slots after that are going to be far more divided.

I though Moses was listed as a Center?

Moses was a center. Also, I wouldnt say he was tougher and stronger than Karl. Karl was a little shotrer but weighed as much and was in better shape. It even says in his bio that he was described as an NFL linebacker more than an NBA player. Moses bio calls him lanky. As far as the #'s. Karl has a better points per game average. More career points. More assists. A better fg% percent. he was named to the NBA all first team more times. Named to more nba all defensive first teams. I dont know where you got the idea that Moses had better all around #'s because he doesnt.
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Dont get me wrong. Moses was a beast. I loved him as a player. If you looked in the dictionary for the definition of work ethic there would be a picture of Moses. You dont last 21 years in the pros without it. But Karl was a beast as well. He has the 2nd most points in NBA history only behind Jabbar and if it wasnt for MJ, he'd have his 2 rings.

25 of the last 30 titles belong to MJ, Magic, Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, Bird & Olajuwon. You can play that same game for every great player outside of those 7 for the last 3 decades. As Spurs fans we're spoiled because the combination of Tim Duncan, great surrounding talent and luck have given us over a decade's worth of title contention. Most great players aren't nearly that lucky.

Moses Malone is definitely a center, he pretty much played his whole career as a center, and particularly those during his prime years with the Rockets and 76ers.
As for strength of player, you have to put Artis Gilmore in there somewhere. Moses Malone wasn't really that strong, he was more agile and smart.

Moses got all of his points the hard way. He never really played with a great dishing point guard.
Mo Cheeks, John Lucas. Sure those two weren't HOF'ers, but they were damn good passers.

Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Cmon now, Phila...I was giving you respect unitl you broke out some excuse why Karl malone wasnt good. Because of Stockton? Give me a break, man. You wanna go at this? Lets do it. You seem to have some personal vendetta against Karl malone. How about Jabbar? He is considered the best center ever. Are you gonna say he isnt because he played with Magic? Give it a rest, man. Karl malone is better than Moses. period. No excuses.
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Hey, phila...I guess we can say MJ isnt that good because he played with a top 50 player in Pippen.

Didn't Jabbar win a Championship before he ever played with Magic?

Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
And for the record, I'd take Moses over Karl in a heartbeat.
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Moses Malone was better than Karl Malone. Karl Malone, despite his size and strength, tend to settle for mid range jump shots too much, and most of that is based on pick and roll. Karl was the better passer, but Moses was the better rebounder, defender, and generally wrecks havoc in the paint.
That being said, Moses Malone was still a center, so he doesn't come into this debate.
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Whenever this question pops up, it should have just one response, 2 words: "Tim Duncan" and then locked.

Elvin Hayes needs to be on that list. Hayes > McHale and even Barkley
Elgin Baylor was 6-5 not sure if he was considered a pf or not. But if so he needs to be on the list.

ive never seen kevin mchale played, but it seems like this guy is overrated...would he win leading the celtics without bird? same with parish also...

Agree. I watched him play.

Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Basketball was only on TV once a week in the late 60s early 70s (Sunday afternoon).
Teams that were often on were the Celtics, Lakers, Bullets, Bucks, 76ers Bulls and Knicks.
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
McHale was not overrated, trust me. He is definitely one of the top 5 PF of all time. Not only does he have the best footwork in the history of league (outside of maybe Hakeem), but his defense was top notch.
While Bird took most of the credit for leading the Celtics in the 80's (and rightfully so), he could not have won anything without McHale beside him.

would he dominate a game if no bird?
-
Re: Who's the Best Power Forward?
Bob Pettit was one of the first dominant big men in the league. He had career averages of 26.4 points, 16.2 rebounds and 3 assists along with 43.6 percent from the field and 76.1 percent from the free throw line. He was also selected to eleven All-Star teams in his 11 year career. He was also selected to the All-NBA team in the eleven seasons he played, ten of the selections as a member of the first team.

You can only compare players in their time and how dominate they were as compared to other players in their time.

I am pretty sure he could dominate a game, maybe not to the extent of a Bird, Duncan, Magic or Jordan, but he could put up 56 points once in a while as well, and play killer D. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that he could dominate a game like a Barkley or a Malone would
His biggest problem is that he can't really pass that well, but for a guy who shoots 60% from the field, and 80% from the line, there really isn't that much of a need for him to pass.
There was about a year and a half the guy was playing on one leg, and still puts up 20/8 a game as the second option, that is pretty ridiculous.
Take 88-89 season for example, Bird only played 6 games because of a bad back, and McHale was already past his prime, he still manages to score 22.5 ppg and 8 rpg. The Celtics weren't that great, and I think barely made the playoffs, but that is what I would imagine a Malone or Barkley would have done in the same situation (maybe a little better).
I would rank:
1) Duncan
2) Barkley
3) Malone
4) Garnett
5) McHale
6) Hayes
7) Nowitzki
Come to think of it, maybe he is not a sure in a 5 as 4 to 7 on my list are pretty close, but definitely one of the top 10.
