Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term
Jersey heist ends with probation term
By Craig Kapitan - Express-News
A former security guard for Tony Parker was ordered to serve probation Monday for stealing an autographed Michael Jordan jersey from the Spurs star's personal gym.
Christopher Carolan, 22, was arrested in June after investigators traced a Craigslist ad back to him and determined that he sold the jersey — valued at $20,000 — for $120.
He pleaded guilty to the theft charge last month in exchange for a two-year sentence, but it was up to state District Judge Maria Teresa Herr to decide Monday whether that sentence should be served on probation or in jail.
Carolan, who didn't have a felony record prior to the plea agreements, also was ordered to serve five-years probation for an unrelated burglary of a habitation conviction.
A former employee of Price Protective Services, Carolan had been assigned to look over Parker's Anaqua Springs Ranch estate when the jersey went missing.

Re: Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term
This is too stiff a penalty. We are talking about $120 and a millionaire here.
He should have been giving a warning or a misdemeanor at worst. We have turned into a police state.

It was worth $20,000 the fellow just sold it for 120 dollars.

Yeah. It wasn't exactly a baseball card. $20K isn't exactly a drop in the bucket as far as felonies go.

Re: Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term

So he isn't only a thief, but a stupid one to boot.
They should have given this guy at least 5 years working for the state.

The jersey was valued at 20K my friend. That will earn you an automatic felony charge every time. What he sold it for is irrelevant.

so you think a guy who makes $120 via stealth should be labeled as a felon?
That's nuts. What about someone who writes a bad check for $120? Should they be labeled felons, too?
You know why the economy is down, because we have become a police state with everyone searching for petty vengence.

It only sold for $120. That's what its worth in a capitalist society. In a Marxist society, it might be worth more.
Another thing you should learn is that the media lies. I don't believe the jersey is worth $20K. Do you really believe that?
-
Re: Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term
How could the economy be better if people writing bad cheques or security guards stealing items they were supposed to protect not be punished?

With questionable authenticity, the jersey is simply what you can get off the rack at SportsChek with a few scribbles on it. He's lucky he sold it for $120.

Yeah I also find it hard to believe that the jersey is worth 20 thousand clams.

it might be game worn. But just cause her stole it and only got 120 means he should be given a light sentence.
-
Re: Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term
The fact that he sold it for $120 has no bearing on the actual value of the jersey. People are assuming a perfect economy in which all goods will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. It's not.
The fact is that the jersey was a valuable memorabilia from one of the greatest basketball players of all time, whether the buyer believe, or even know that it was authentic is highly questionable.
All it means is that the perpetrator didn't know what he had on his hands, and was willing to sell something for far less than what it was worth. At the same time, not being very smart about it and doing it in an open forum. It either means that he's not all that bright, or that he has no regard for the law.

Re: Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term
And what if you guys had a Duncan game worn autographed finals jersey of TD and got ripped off it?
Would you care if it's worth 100$ or 20k$?
MJ was TP's childhood hero, you can't put price tags on these.

So if you had a new car worth 20,000 dollars and it was stolen and sold for a small percentage of that value across town and wrecked, then your insurance company would use the quick sale price to determine your repayment value?
Felony or not , nor the fact the victim is a millionare has nothing to do with it. He is a common scum of the earth ,low life thief. How you seemingly downplay this fact is beyond my understanding.

Re: Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term
Do the people here seriously fucking think that stealing a basketball jersey should be a fucking felony?
A felony is supposed to be serious crime, like murder, rape, armed robbery, or grand theft.
If you believe that stealing a fucking basketball jersey should be a felony, then you are part of the police state.
Get real people!!!

He was armed and he robbed them. So, you agree it was a felony. If someone stole something from you that was worth 20k, would you not want the person to face felony charges? I don't understand why it's so hard to understand.
-
Re: Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term
And he is not being treated like he committed a felony, so what is the problem?
EDIT: For the interest of all, felony usually refers to serious crimes, while "lesser" crimes are labelled "misdemeanor". It's more a case of semantics than anything.
-
Re: Parker's Jersey Heist Ends With Probation Term
I'm just impressed the jersey was able to be stolen in the first place by a man unaware of a proper fence.

Robbery is when you confront someone with a weapon. That is not what happened here. You have been duped by the police state.

He got a two year sentence. A felony is a crime with a sentence of over 1 year.

I also think the low-life scumbag should have gotten worse.
you're in the minority here, Galileo

Would you want Tony or anyone else happening upon this guard with his weapon in the act of stealing the jersey? I don't see why you bring up "the police state", since this has nothing to do with whatever political statement you're trying to imply.
Crimes can be classified by type and/or severity. Petty theft would be if someone had stolen a jersey from Academy valued at $30. I wouldn't think it fair to be convicted of felony for that action, but for stealing a 20k jersey, that is a different situation.

The dude stole an effin' T-shirt. Get over it. It is not the end of the world.

I don't believe the jersey is worth $20K, that sounds like media hype.
You should get a warning for first offense in stuff like this.
