Will the Spurs unload Bonner during the year to save money by the end of the year?

I have a friend on here that believes Spurs will try to salary dump Bonner to shave off some money by the end of the year?

In other words Matt Bonner for a 2nd rounder.

Do you think this is something R.C Buford is considering?

Yes or NO?

if bonner is out of, or a limited part of the rotation by then, sure. no doubt.

I think my friend is clueless. Then again I dont know. Just my opinion.

If the Spurs are happy with the team and do not feel they need to make another move, then I think they try and dump salary.

If they need to make another move with expiring contracts, they will do that. But neither is far fetched and that was what I was trying to explain.

Nah, I don't think they'll straight dump him. He is useful in our system, especially with Tim on the floor. He gets a bad rap here but I think he's a lot more important to the team than people give him credit for.

Now, I could see him being packaged with someone else to get a decent player in return.

I'm very excited to see what the Bonner storyline is this season. I believe his minutes will be decent to start out, less than last year's average of course, but they'll also be his to lose. Continue playing good defense and hitting the three ball, and improve his rebounding a bit, and Bonner will have a solid role in the rotation.

Ahem, I almost forgot about the actual question. Are you insane? Bonner is a great guy to have around. He's underpaid IMO. I'm confident he'll continue contributing. This isn't the Bonner of old, he was a contributor last season .. and it's not like Dyess and Timmy are young.

i think if haislip produces and ian produces i think they will try.

Making a move with expiring contracts ( Mason/ Bonner) for an upgrade at the 2 spot or Center spot is more likely to happen in my opinion than a salary dump in January of Bonner for a 2nd rounder.

Unless Blair Haislip Mahimni all make R.C Buford look like Einstein (There's a better chance of Duncan to be left off next years all star team). Even if that were the case I think Spurs would try to upgrade the starting 2 spot with Bonner/ Mason before just letting Bonner go to save a million.

It would not be saving a million. It would be saving 6+M.

Saying that it is more likely that the Spurs would use Bonner as a trade chip than salary dump him is not the same thing as ridiculing someone as clueless for suggesting a salary dump is possible.

The savings could be considerably more than a million. Think of the Beno trade.

The only way Spurs dump Bonner is if Blair is in talks for ROY and Mahimni or Haislip earn their way to take Bonner's minutes. That scenario is far-fetched.

I don't think they will unload him. Bonner is a guy who can come off the bench and do some damage. He knows our system and he is surprisingly effective in limited minutes in a limited role. If they trade him, than only in a package for another player they can use, but not for a 2nd rounder or a scrub.

Two people have stated it could be possible IF scenarios played out. Far-fetched scenarios.

If history repeats itself and Mahimni is Mahimni and if Haislip is just Haislip then Bonner for salary dump doesn't make sense. Therefore more likely than not Spurs won't dump Bonner for salary reasons.

It is not a forgone conclusion that they will dump Bonner. They might dump other players. But there are a few scenarios where it makes perfect sense.

What other scenario's than the one's I pointed out?

As I stated above :

If Blair ends up living up to his ROY candidate projections on ST.
and If Mahimni or Haislip earn and take over Bonner's minutes by December.

then I can see Bonner being let go.

You need to go back and read the "Nocioni thread". I don't get why you consider someone coming in and averaging 8 PTS, 4.8 REB, .32 BLKS and .58 STLS is so hard to accomplish, either with a combo of players splitting minutes (Ian/Theo/Blair/Haislip) or with a different line up where Bonner won't be used very much (small ball with TP/Mason/Manu/RJ/Duncan).

Bonner is not some irreplaceable piece. I am fairly confident that the combo of Ian/Blair/Theo can grab 4.8 REBS a game. If so, Bonner can be traded and his limited minutes split between Ian/Blair/Theo

I'm not a Bonner fan. I just know Pop and R.C value him a lot higher than everyone on here including myself. This was evident when they gave him 10 million dollars for riding the bench after the title in 2007.

They value how he spreads the floor, his shot selection, his work ethic, the way he competes.

Haislip and Mahimni are going to have to really really impress Pop and R.C for them to think about letting Bonner go in a salary dump most specifically.

Perhaps later in the season, but why? Out of all the big men on the roster, only he and Timmy have chemistry and experience, with each other on either end and under Popovich. I expect fairly smooth transitions for Dyess and Ratliff, but Blair kinda, Haislip and especially Ian are question marks right now. And Bonner is in his prime. Our big men - at least the ones that aren't currently question marks - are old, man. Bonner can eat up a lot of minutes during the regular season and then get them cut back some in the playoffs.

Also, it seems like you think I hate Bonner or don't value his role. I wouldn't be upset if he stays and get minutes. If he helps, then fine. I am not saying ship him out at all costs.

I am saying I could see it happening and I would fully understand.

Although for the right piece I can see them trading Bonner/ Mason or Bonner / Finley/ Williams + Mahimni for a big or a two-guard at the deadline.

Then why did they bring in Drew Gooden? Why did Haislip get signed? Why did Anthony Tolliver get so many chances?

He is valuable, and I defended him all last year. But if it comes down to saving some serious money and the team feels comfortable, it could happen.

Because Gooden/ Haislip and Tolliver all were signed for the minimum and were low risk/ high reward signings.

I'm not a Bonner fan. It's just obvious Pop values him higher than everyone on here.

He had to start him. Oberto was out, KT cannot handle the minutes.

Well, all that's really left to debate is the limits of far-fetchedness, if such a word exists.

For the Spurs to consider a Bonner salary dump you need two basic conditions to develop:

1. Bonner falls out of the rotation. This should be acceptable to most here as something that could very well happen, either through poor performance by Bonner or good performances by one or more of the bigs who are under cheap contracts for 2010-11.

2. Spurs have no weaknesses severe enough to justify a trade, especially one that adds salary for 2010-11. This is the weak link in the salary dump scenario. With so many unknowns going into the season one must be very optimistic to expect that no glaring holes will develop by the deadline.

If those two conditions are met, then the Spurs need a trade partner with enough cap space or a large enough trade exception to make it work. The Spurs send enough money to pay the remainder of Bonner's salary plus an agreeable fee for services rendered. This could be more money, future draft picks, the rights to current draft picks, or some combination. Minnesota took Beno for a 500K fee. Memphis charged Denver a first round pick to take Steven Hunter this summer. Depending on the deal, the Spurs could save as much as the 3.2M in lux tax they would have to pay if Bonner is on the roster at the end of the year.

If I had to place a bet today, I would bet on Bonner staying with the Spurs until his contract expires. A big who can shoot the 3 has a place on the Spurs and Haislip is the only candidate to supplant Bonner from that role.

Dude, Gooden was there for 19 games. He had no time to learn anything. KT could not have handled starters minutes. And you are saying Oberto was not out for the entire year? The guy had serious medical problems, even if he was there.

if the spurs could dump bonner for a second rounder, they would have done it already.

Not on his role.

It is very unlikely that Bonner would be traded to save money in my opinion, due to what would have to happen for that to take place as I stated above.

C'mon now. let's admit it: Pop was playing games last season. Seeing what worked and what didn't. Stretching certain players' abilities as far as he could make them. He wanted to see who would hold up and what roles could be filled. Neither Mason nor Bonner did when it mattered. That's why Hill didn't play til later, when it may have been too late. Pop had to find out if we needed something big, and he needed to show Holt and the rest of the owners if it was true. So we made big moves, and Mason will go back to being spot up shooter and so will Bonner.

BUT

Let's not confuse their situations, which are very different. Bonner is still in his prime and can still earn a lot of minutes early with his knowledge of the system, especially on defense. He just needs to stroke a few 3's to hold onto substantial minutes and a role. Is the ownership truly that desperate for financial relief? Why the foray into the luxury tax, then?

Kurt Thomas could have handled 23 minutes a game.

I'm not a fan of Bonner. I'm just thinking realistically. Pop and R.C value Bonner more than we do.

Bonner was very valuable in our 2009 Playoff run and Pop really knows what he's doing.

He's won 4 titles you know.

Now that Mahinmi is injured for the 100th time we made need Boner after all.

Mason, Bonner, Finley have expiring guaranteed contracts. I don't see how we can dump them and save money. We can of course save SOMEONE ELSE'S money, we trade them for someone with a longer term contract and then they dump that player.

Read post 38 for the mechanics of how NBA players are dumped to save money for the team that dumps them. It happens all the time.
