That was sweet :)
I miss that guy. I always loved how fast he got to the rim off of a pump fake or drive.
and john lucas was the coach.
Don't forget Negele Knight in the PG combo. Tarkanian quit "supposedly" because they wouldn't get a "quality point guard" :lol
The drek that McCombs and Bass put around him was criminal...
But hey, I was young and didn't know any better to be pissed off about it at the time :lol
The Spurs brass got away with it because David could cover up any weaknesses...
No rebounding? Dave wins a rebounding title(he needed Rodman to cover that weakness like he needed a hole in the head)
Need scoring? Dave wins a scoring title.
Need D? Dave puts up 4 and a half blocks and 2 and a half steals per game.
No PG? No problem...Dave averages 4.8 assists per game...while he leads the league in scoring.
In fact the only thing David Robinson could not do...was the be the guy knocking down the perimeter shots that pulled the extra defenders off of him while he was simultaneously in the paint. It's physically impossible...even for David Robinson.
Clearly it took some effort to match up all the scouting video with the radio play-by-play. Thanks to the Spurs for doing this. What a treasure.
It's a little known fact that Dale Ellis actually died in 1991 and his corpse continued to play basketball for a handful of years afterwards.
Actually, Chuck Person could do it....he's the one guy David played with that actully could, unfortuntely it takes more than one guy.Quote:
Person can do it!!! eh....
Other than that...Bruce Bowen was more of a legitimate perimeter threat than Vinny, or AJ or most of the guys Drob played with other than Elliott.
When Kobe tried to double Tim off of Bruce...Bruce dropped 27 points on his ass and it was never attempted again.
Fantastic find, spursdotcom, I have longing to see this.
BTW, those were some pretty tough shots, long jumpers, drives, turnarounds, David did it all, and was doubled/tripled most of that time.
Great video
Thanks!!!!
Robinson's quad-double game is airing on ESPN Classic at 5pm (CST) and on NBA TV at 7:30pm (CST) today.
Double check the times where you are in case I'm off. :)
Thank you spursdotcom for the single greatest post in the history of Spurstalk. :tu
I have been wanting to see this for 15 years now.
Loved the video. Never seen it before and always wondered about it. Props to the fans that were at that game cheering on the Admiral.
Exactly. I'm in shock that I can finally watch this game. I listened to it on the radio (it wasn't televised at all) and ever since that day I've tried to find the footage. I gave up a few years ago when I was told that it just didn't exist.
This is like the holy grail of Spurs fandom.
:worthy:
Thank you for this. Great stuff. DRob was a freak of nature.
Man this is great! I had only seen a youtube video of this game but it was only like 2:30 long and didn't have any commentary or anything. This really shows just how awesome David was that game and having Jay Howard on the call is also great!
Goosebumps.
My list of "things to see before I die" just got another checkmark on it.
Thanks spursdotcom!!
Great Vid ! Damn.
2 things really amazing for me: 1- he scored 71 points with only 2 dunks it means 67 points on JS, lay ups and FTs and 2- How humble is this guy !! He begun to celebrate a little after his last JS.
Our broadcasting dept. really helped in getting us this footage, we're very happy to be able to bring it to life on the web.
Thanks you so much for posting this piece of NBA history.
A couple of very minor technical quibbles.
Is the original 4:3 aspect ratio is stretched to 16:9 or is it cropped to fit a 16:9 frame? I just don't like it when it's stretched. I call that fattyvision.
I'd like an option to run it fullscreen on my tv so I can tell my girlfriend who all the other people are (she always asks during these vintage games).
Again, thanks to everyone who helped put this together.
DRob narrowly beating Shaq for the scoring title in the last game of the season is similar to how Gervin won the scoring title in the 1977-78 season. Gervin scored 63 points in the last game of the season and beat David Thompson. Gervin won the title by averaging 27.22 ppg. Thompson finished with an average of 27.15 ppg.
Awesome video
I've NEVER heard the home team's fans cheer for a visitor like that before.
