the Cummings injury in the summer of 92 as well is still an injury that haunts Robinson, I mean Terry Cummings was a borderline ALLSTAR. I think it was 91 he scored 60 the night they announced the all stars and they left him off the team.
The back court as was said was always crap.
The best team was the 89-90 team, that team might be as talented as some of the Spurs championship teams, it's just they were too young...if they'd just been able to keep that team intact they would have won an NBA title. Hell I think if they hadn't traded Maurice Cheeks they might have won it that year...you trade a seasoned tough nosed vet for a second year player at pretty much the toughest postion in the league....that inexperience is likely to bite you in the ass, because Magic Johnson's(and even Tony Parker's) don't grow on trees
But after that year they got rid of Brikowski, Wingate, who was Bruce Bowen before Bruce Bowen was Bruce Bowen got accused of those rapes and missed most of the season...that was basically the toughness of the team right there.
Willie was never as good as he was as a rookie then his feet and shins got screwed up, then TC wrecked his knee etc.
I remember though, after the 89-90 season, everyone pretty much felt it was just a matter of time till they were the champions...I remember when they played the Pistons in the pre-season in 90 everyone said it was finals preview....

there is zero debate on whether dave is an all time great.
Zero.
Who debates this? Seriously.
There are debates on dave vs hakeem, dave vs shaq, dave vs dwight howard.
But dave is without question or debate an all time great center and player of the game

You weren't going to hurt those teams inside, they would put as many bodies inside as it took to shut it down...that's why the Jazz could dismantle any dominant inside team but get their clocks cleaned by teams like the Mavericks and Kings.
Same thing that usually decides whether or not the Spurs win a title now..when we've got the Stephen Jackson's and Mario Elie's and Steve Kerr's and Jaren Jackson's stepping up we don't lose...when we've got the Terry Porter's and Smitty's and Hedo's(when he played for us)...we don't.
The Spurs have had a bigman that could draw double teams for going 20 straight years now.......that means somebody is missing open shots when it matters....

Like I said I was really young around that era of spursdom.
Young enough to truly believe that the spurs had a chance with the likes of vinny and jr reid suiting up with david.
Those teams broke a young boys heart so many times.

Re: David Robinson's 71-point Game (video)
I've emailed the Spurs, well, tried to, numerous times about obtaining a copy of this game. I've been told it doesn't exist. Obviously not :tu
But hold up, it's being broadcast on ESPN classic in the states? The full game? I simply have to get my hands on a recorded copy or whatever of the full game. I must have it.
If anyone can help please PM me! :)
(please please please please please!)

Re: David Robinson's 71-point Game (video)
David's success with non-Tim Duncan Spurs teams was amazing. Yeah, he never won a championship but who was going to win a championship on those teams? Those Spurs casts were so bad, it's amazing David took them as far as they went.
Nowadays, players demand trades out of teams that bad.
Look at the other legends and who they ran with:
Shaquille O'Neal had an elite superstar at the time with Penny (for those that don't remember Penny took the league by storm for a few years). Hakeem Olajuwon played with probably the best collection of talent, role players, and cohesiveness ever (young Robert Horry, young Sam Cassell, prime Kenny Smith, just after prime Clyde and Otis Thorpe). Michael Jordan had a Scottie Pippen who was able to carry the Bulls to the semi-finals and even push the Knicks when MJ went out. Malone had the same hall of fame point guard, hall of fame coach, and sharp shooting 2 guard for years and could never get the job done. Kemp and Gary Payton collborated in their primes and couldn't either.
David Robinson had what? Sean Elliott? Elliott was a nice sidekick but was never made of the material championship combos are. He definitely falls way short of any Penny/D-Wade/Pippen/Kobe partner in crime.
When David finally got a legit superstar, he got his titles.
To make light of David Robinson and question his legendary status is as ignorant as it gets. The guy could average 25-12-5-4-2 (points-rebounds-assists-blocks-steals) all while shooting 50%+ fgs and 75% from the line.
Who the hell else is going to give you those numbers on any modern day team?

I think they just have us waiting for The Admirable DVD collection.

Re: David Robinson's 71-point Game (video)
This is one of those events where you can remember exactly where you were at the time it was happening. I was driving down Congress Av in Austin and when I got home, I sat in the driveway listening in awe.
Where the hell is Jay Howard these days anyway?

lol no he averaged like three 3pointers a season. They every once in a blue moon ran a play where he would roll out to the top of the arc and take a three. Or he would just shoot a three when he was really feeling it. Ala the 3 point shot i'm sure you are referring to in this game. He couldn't miss that night. Even the clippers coach said they started throwing double and even the occasional triple team on him all night and it didn't matter lol.
As for Rodman he was pretty much a rollercoaster ride the two seasons he played with the Spurs. When he had his good games he was a good spark and motivator to the team, but when he had some bad games he became a distraction and a disease to the team. He started giving up on the team in the playoffs. We needed him and he pretty much dissappeared in the last couple of playoff games and then we got eliminated. I think it was a combination of him playing shitty and him at some point stop believing in the team. Either way it was apparently obvious that he wasn't right for the team anymore.

Re: David Robinson's 71-point Game (video)
I am so freakin' excited to finally get to see this! Like others, I did not even know this footage existed. Phenomenal! Thanks so much for posting this, spursdotcom! :)
I just realized something. David had 24 points at halftime, which means that David scored 47 points in the second half. That is just incredible!

Re: David Robinson's 71-point Game (video)
Finally! I remember staying up watching CNN Headline Sports (because it seemed like ESPN never showed the Spurs highlights) and this was the leading story. We didn't have a computer or internet so I would stay up on school nights and record the stats of D-Rob and the Spurs on my Street and Smiths schedule. I still have my S&S where I wrote in large, bold letters, "Robinson scores 71 beats Shaq for scoring title!" I'm not sure if I was more happy he scored 71, or beat Shaq for the scoring title???
(PS: I enjoyed the Jack Haley sighting too!)

I finally got to see it.:elephant
The guy had around 50 before his first dunk.:wow

Re: David Robinson's 71-point Game (video)
1) David will always have this, and those that would forget (non-Spurs fans) the Admiral, will need to explain away this individual game and season accomplishment to over-look Robinson when talking about the best ever.
2) That the Spurs pulled together to make this happen, and screw Oneal out of the scoring championship, makes it priceless.

I don't see how you could have attended a Clippers game back then (or now), unless you were a fan of basketball/the NBA in general.

It's actually amazing that Robinson was one of the few that had a 70-point game and one of the few that had a quad-double..he did BOTH..unreal..
